In the first edition of Inquisitorial Inquiries Richard L. Kagan and Abigail Dyer collected translated and annotated six of these autobiographies from a diverse group of prisoners. Now they add the fascinating life story of another victim of the Inquisition: Esteban Jamete a French sculptor accused of being a Protestant. Each of the autobiographies has been selected to represent a particular political or social issue while at the same time raising more intimate questions about the religious sexual political or national identities of the prisoners. ‎Gute Exemplare / 2 BÄNDE. - Meyer Kayserling (1829-1905) war Rabbiner und Historiker, der insbesondere über Literatur und Geschichte der sephardischen Juden gearbeitet hat. Seine Bildung und Ausbildung erwarb er in Halberstadt, Nikolsburg, Prag, Würzburg und Berlin, um sich dann der Geschichte und der Philosophie zu widmen. Von Leopold von Ranke in seinen historischen Studien bestärkt, konzentrierte er sich auf die Geschichte und Literatur der iberischen Halbinsel, wobei ihn auch der Anteil der Juden an der Entdeckung Amerikas interessierte. // ... Die Geschichte der Juden in Spanien reicht mehr als 2000 Jahre bis in die Zeit des Römischen Reichs zurück. Im Mittelalter entfaltete sich unter islamischer und später christlicher Herrschaft auf der Iberischen Halbinsel ein blühendes jüdisches Leben, sowohl in kultureller als auch in wirtschaftlicher Hinsicht. Diese Blütezeit wurde im Jahr 1492 durch das Ausweisungsedikt (Alhambra-Edikt) der katholischen Könige Isabella von Kastilien und Ferdinand von Aragonien beendet. Die Juden wurden entweder zur Konversion zum Christentum oder zur Emigration aus Spanien gezwungen. Über Jahrhunderte war danach in Spanien bis in die Neuzeit hinein kein offenes jüdisches Leben mehr möglich. Die aus Spanien vertriebenen Juden (Sephardim oder Sefarden nach der hebräischen Bezeichnung für Spanien Sfarád) ließen sich im übrigen Mittelmeerraum nieder und behielten dabei zum Teil noch ihre aus Spanien mitgebrachte Kultur und Sprache, das Judenspanisch (Spaniolisch, Ladino) bei. ? // Das Judentum in Portugal beginnt mit der Ankunft der ersten Juden vermutlich schon im 6. Jahrhundert v. Chr. Unbelegten historischen Vermutungen zufolge kamen die ersten Juden bereits im 6. Jahrhundert v. Chr., zur Zeit Königs Nebukadnezar III., auf die Iberische Halbinsel. Archäologisch belegt ist die Präsenz von Juden seit den ersten Jahrhunderten unserer Zeitrechnung. Im deutschsprachigen Raum meist Judengassen genannt, existierten die später Judiarias (deutsch: Judenviertel) bezeichneten Viertel in Portugal bereits zur Zeit der Mauren im Al-Andalus. Im 16. Jahrhundert bildeten sie eine eher kleine Gruppe, die in sogenannten comunas (dt.: Kommunen) organisiert waren und in den Städten lebten. Mit der kleinen Gruppe reicher Bankiers, Kaufleute und öffentlicher Amtsinhaber, der größeren Gruppe Handwerker (insbesondere Schneider, Schmiede, Goldschmiede und Schuhmacher) und der kleineren Gruppe besitzloser Armer hatten sie mindestens drei gesellschaftliche Gruppen gebildet. Sie mussten in durch Mauern oder Zäune von den Christen abgesonderten Vierteln leben, den Judiarias, deren Tore nachts abgesperrt wurden, innerhalb dieser besaßen sie jedoch ihre Synagogen und ihr Gemeindeleben.
