In den Jahren 1954/55 führten die Verfasser eine Expedition zu den zum Volk der Yanoama gehörigen und damals nahezu unbekannten Waika-Indianern des oberen Orinoco durch. Als erste Fachethnologen lebten sie fast ein Jahr lang unter dieser Stammesgruppe. Das gesamte dabei gesammelte ethnographische Material wird hier vorgelegt. Die völkerkundlichen Beobachtungen beziehen sich hauptsächlich auf das Dorf Mahekodotedi. Es liegt am Nordufer des Orinoco. Dort macht der Strom eine Biegung, und die Indianer nennen den Ort ?Das Dorf am Flußknie" (Maheko = Knie; Tedi = Dorf). Durch den zeitlichen Abstand und den inzwischen verstärkten zivilisatorischen Einfluß ergibt es sich, daß das entworfene Kulturbild weitgehend der Vergangenheit angehört; umso bedeutender erscheint es, daß es der Nachwelt erhalten bleibt. Bei allen wichtigen Fragen wird der letzte wissenschaftliche Stand berücksichtigt, soweit er zu Beginn der Drucklegung publiziert war. Ein musikethnologischer Beitrag über die Waika ergänzt das Werk. - Der unter dem Titel ?Waika" im Jahre 1964 erschienene Band I der Ergebnisse der Frobenius Expedition 1954?55 nach Süd-Ost-Venezuela behandelte die kulturgeschichtliche Stellung dieser Indianer im Rahmen der Völkerkunde Südamerikas, wobei in Kurzfassung die wichtigsten Beobachtungen und Erfahrungen als Ausgangspunkt der vergleichenden Betrachtung vorweg genommen wurden. In diesem Band II wird nun das gesamte auf die zu den Yanoama gehörige Gruppe der Waika des oberen Orinoco sich beziehende und im Felde gesammelte Material vorgelegt. Dazu werden vielfach die von anderer Seite inzwischen beigebrachten Daten herangezogen, soweit sie zur Erklärung oder Ergänzung der eigenen Information notwendig oder angebracht erscheinen, so daß in allen wichtigen und strittigen Punkten der neueste wissenschaftliche Stand bis Mitte 1972 berücksichtigt wurde. Der Titel ?Mahekodotedi" für die monographische Beschreibung der Waika wurde deshalb gewählt, weil sich unsere völkerkundlichen Beobachtungen in der Hauptsache auf dieses Dorf beziehen. Es liegt auf 64°55' westlicher Länge und 2°25' nördlicher Breite am Nordufer des Orinoco, der hier eine Biegung macht, weshalb der Ort von den Indianern das ?Dorf am Flußknie" (Maheko = Knie, tedi = Dorf) genannt wird. Im Gegensatz dazu wird eine gerade Strecke des Orinoco als ?Shailili ko", d. h. gerader Fluß bezeichnet, ein Name, den Anduze (1960) zum Titel seines Buches über die Franco-Venezolanische-Orinocoquell-Expedition von 1951 erhoben hat. In Band I des Gesamtwerkes (Zerries 1964, S. 17) hat der Senior-Autor das Wort ?shailili" irrtümlich als ?gebogen" überliefert, es heißt jedoch eindeutig ?gerade" (Barker 1955, S. 140 shaililiua; Lizot 1970, S. 172: shaririwe). So beziehen sich alle Aussagen, falls nicht ausdrücklich anders vermerkt, auf das Dorf Mahekodotedi bzw. seine Bewohner, die ebenfalls häufig, dem Wortsinn entsprechend, Mahekodotedi genannt werden, und unsere eigenen dortigen Beobachtungen und Erfahrungen. Durch den zeitlichen Abstand von rund 20 Jahren und die inzwischen, vor allem durch die bald nach unserem Weggang erfolgte Errichtung eines Salesianer-Missionspostens in El Platanal eingetretenen Veränderungen, fügt es sich, daß das hier entworfene Kulturbild der Mahekodotedi weitgehend der Vergangenheit angehört.
