‎En juillet-août 1845, Adolphe Delacour, ancien rédacteur du “Patriote Français” de Montevideo publie à Paris un livre sur « Le Rίo de la Plata. Buenos Aires et Montevideo », « avec un portrait du colonel Thiébaut de la Légion Française ». L'ouvrage avait préalablement été publié dans la Revue Indépendante, publication fondée en 1841 par George Sand et Pierre Leroux dans la même année 1845. La parution du “Patriote Français” montevidéén est étroitement liée à une situation géopolitique très précise, à savoir une guerre dans laquelle une partie de la population de l’Uruguay était alliée à une partie de la population de l’Argentine et en guerre contre une autre alliance argentino-uruguayenne. Ce conflit régional était suivi de très près par le gouvernement de Rio de Janeiro alors que la diplomatie et l’armée françaises, tout comme les anglaises, participaient très activement dans cette guerre où il était surtout question de la « liberté de commerce », c’est-à-dire de la liberté pour les bateaux européens de circuler sans entraves tout au long et à travers du bassin du Rio de la Plata. Le port de Montevideo, assiégé huit ans durant par une armée uruguayenne et argentine, aura le soutien, pour sa défense, d’une légion de volontaires italiens commandée par Giuseppe Garibaldi, d’une légion de volontaires basques et d’une légion de volontaires français. “Le Patriote Français” sera l’organe de liaison de cette légion, aux prises avec les agents diplomatiques français qui voudraient surtout empêcher leurs concitoyens de se mêler à cette guerre, et qu’ils appellent donc à une sorte de neutralité que la légion de volontaires refuse sans hésiter. Également, la légion de volontaires français se querellait souvent avec son allié, le gouvernement de la Défense de Montevideo, à cause de la situation matérielle de ces soldats improvisés, de ces volontaires pieds-nus, affamés, etc. Le lien avec le passé napoléonien de cette légion est visible chez plusieurs de ses protagonistes. Ainsi par exemple, Jean-Chrysostome Thiébaut (1790- Montevideo 1851) ; le colonel Thiébaut, chef des volontaires français, est un vieux de la vieille, c’est-à-dire un ancien de la Grande armée, qui avait participé à Waterloo, avait été condamné à mort, s’était exilé à Londres, n'avait pas été gracié par Charles X, et à nouveau s’était exilé à Rio et finalement à Montevideo...
