Charles Francis Saunders 1859-1941 was born to Quaker parents in Bucks County Pennsylvania. He and his first wife Elisabeth Hallowell Saunders d. 1910 were both avid naturalists; Charles began publishing essays on botany as early as the 1890s. Charles and Elisabeth also collaborated on a number of publications he as author she as illustrator. After a honeymoon trip to California and the Southwest in 1902 the couple moved permanently to California in 1906 and settled in a Craftsman bungalow on North Lake Avenue in Pasadena where Charles devoted himself full time to writing. He eventually published more than a dozen books inspired by California and the Southwest. Both Charles and Elisabeth were amateur photographers and many of their photographs were used to illustrate Saunders' books The Indians of the Terraced Houses 1912 and Under the Sky in California 1913. In 1921 Saunders married Mira Barrett Culin d. 1968 whom he had met at the Pasadena Garden Club. Also a writer Mira shared Saunders' interest in gardens botany and photography. For many years Mira published articles on Pasadena gardens parks and trees in the Pasadena Star News for which she took dozens of photographs. First with Elisabeth and then with Mira Saunders travelled extensively throughout California and the Southwest photographing all of the California Missions the regions' natural wonders Native Americans and flora among other things. These interests became the subjects of 18 books and numerous essays and articles Saunders published in his lifetime. Many of these books were illustrated with photographs taken by their author on his many excursions. Saunders' collection of Native American pottery and crafts is now in the collection of the Southwest Museum Los Angeles and his botanic library is in the possession of the Santa Barbara Botanic Gardens. First Edition . Hardcover. Good. About 60 pieces of music bound into 2 folio volumes by the owner/collector Hattie Savage. One is still in its original binding; the other we have had rebound in new black textured cloth quite similar to the original with the original leather piece stamped with the owner's name pasted on the front cover. There are waterstains on the foreedge of many pieces in the rebound volume. The non-rebound volume has a waterstain on the front cover but none inside. It was bound professionally by J.G. Roberts & Co. of Boston and they provided an engraved Contents page which has the titles filled in by hand. The book is in Very Good condition and was possibly issued without a dust jacket. This edition limited to 500 unnumbered copies printed by the Grabhorn Press. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some beginning bumping and rubbing. The red cloth spine has a paper label that is in mostly clean condition - there is a small ding to the top front corner and the lable has noticeable toning. The text pages are clean and bright. "Tiburcio Vásquez was born in Monterey Alta California Mexico present-day California United States on April 11 1835 to José Hermenegildo Vásquez and María Guadalupe Cantúa. In accordance with Spanish tradition Vásquez's birth was celebrated on the saint's feast day of his namesake St. Tiburtius; thus he always referred to his birthday as August 11 1835. His great-grandfather came to Alta California with the De Anza Expedition of 1776. He grew up in a moderately well-off middle-class family who owned land granted to them by the Mexican government due to his father's military service as a Spanish soldier. He spent plenty of time on his father's and his Uncle Felipe Vásquez's ranchos learning the skills of ranching. He was noted as excellent in marksmanship and horsemanship from a young age. Parker Scammon is an officer with the United Army Corps of Topographic Engineers. Parker would later command the 23rd Ohio Regiment during the Civil War. <br /> <br />Good Friday Morn. 1846 <br /> <br />My Dearest brother <br /> <br />Parker fully intended to cover this envelope to you but as he was about doing it the Quartermaster must needs send for him to come to the Library for some important briefings: and so he begs me to write for him and apologize to the best of my ability for the non-appearance of your beer. You must have thought him very neglectful and tho' it is rather an awkward task I will tell you the whole truth. If you will have patience to wait till the end of this month it shall then be forthcoming. He expected to order it on the 1st but our cook took it into his head to go back to the city to live and as we had at his own request kept back the quarter part of his wages for 18 months you must know our last month's pay went with a rush and as we are so involved on every side we wont borrow and therefore all parties ourselves included must wait till after another visit from the Paymaster for our good beer. I have thus most frankly stated to you the case and I hope you will excuse it. We remember that we are still considerably in your debt so that it is with great pleasure that P. will attend to your order just so soon as circumstances will permit. I think the value of the empty half barrels returned is $1.50 each and they quite well have them as money. They are returned at any time and credited to sender. <br /> <br />We are looking forward to your visit in June or July with impatience.
