A tight handsome first edition of the first title published by this well-known group of Chicago-area Western Americana buffs. Features such articles as Everett D. Graff's "The Westerners Go Overland; Retread the Various Routes to California" Albert S. Johannsen's "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" Clarence S. Paine's "She Laid Her Pistol Down; or The Last Will and Testament of Calamity Jane" and Don Russell's "Jesse James -- Postwar Bandit." Near fine. On Chicago letterhead of "The American Peoples Encyclopedia" where Russell served as assistant editor Russell cordially agrees to review books for the "Lincoln Herald" column that Gates headed for many years -- but declines to increase his reviewing for "Unhappily I have a somewhat similar job for The Westerners Brand book which has kept me loaded down too long and then I was so foolish as to take on the job of being judge for the best non-fiction book of last year for the Western Writers of America. I thought I probably had read all the books that would be on their list but they have rung in 7 or 8 on me." Boldly signed in full in black ink at the conclusion. Russell 1899-1989 was a Chicago journalist and newspaper editor and Western historian author of the 1960 "The Lives and Legends of Buffalo Bill." Appropriate brand-like ownership inkstamp of L.H. (UNITED STATES - FOUNDING DOCUMENTS). DE LA ROCHEFOUCAULD D'ENVILLE, LOUIS ALEXANDRE, DUC DE, Translator
CONSTITUTIONS DES TREIZE ETATS-UNIS DE L'AMERIQUE
Philadelphia and Paris: Printed for La Rochefoucault and Benjamin Franklin by Philippe-Denys Pierres and Pissot père et fils 1783. The First Collected Edition in French of the Constitutions of the U.S. States. ONE OF 500 COPIES of the regular issue and 100 Large Paper Copies; this apparently one of the 50 regular copies bound in calf. 194 x 122 mm. 7 5/8 x 4 3/4". 2 p.l. 540 pp.With extensive explanatory footnotes by Benjamin Franklin.
Contemporary cat's paw calf raised bands spine gilt in compartments with pomegranate centerpiece volute cornerpieces brown morocco label marbled endpapers. With the Great Seal of the United States on title page. A PRESENTATION COPY: the title page with contemporary ink note in Latin dated 1783 stating that this book was the gift of the Duc de La Rochefoucauld who translated the American documents from "idiomatic English" into French. Livingston "Franklin's Press at Passy" pp. 181-88; Howes C-716; Sabin 16118; Streeter sale II:1035. Thin strip missing from head of spine backstrip rather dried joints edges and corners a bit rubbed leather a little pitted from acid treatment as usual other minor external defects but the binding agreeable as an original unrestored survival. First two and last two leaves a little foxed and soiled minor foxing in a number of other places but the text quite fresh and generally clean and appealing.

This is an especially desirable copy of a work containing founding documents of the American republic in French an important language for the international community the book apparently being a gift--as indicated on the title page--from the translator. The volume represents a collaboration between compiler Benjamin Franklin the man the U.S. State Department considers "America's first diplomat" and translator Louis Alexandre de La Rochefoucauld 1743-92 an important French aristocrat who was an enthusiastic supporter of the American Revolution. The book contains the state constitutions of the original 13 states the Declaration of Independence the Articles of Confederation precursor to the U.S. Constition and the treaties between the United States and France the Low Countries and Sweden. Printer polymath and Founding Father Franklin 1706-90 explained the motivation behind this work to Thomas Mifflin president of the Confederation Congress in a letter of 25 December 1783: "The extravagant Misrepresentations of our Political State in foreign Countries made it appear necessary to give them better Information which I thought could not be more effectually and authentically done than by publishing a Translation into French now the most general Language in Europe of the Book of Constitutions which had been printed by Order of Congress. This I accordingly got well done. … It has been well taken and has afforded a Matter of Surprise to many who had conceived mean Ideas of the State of Civilization in America and could not have expected so much political Knowledge and Sagacity had existed in our Wilderness. And from all Parts I have the Satisfaction to hear that our Constitutions in general are much admired. I am persuaded that this Step will not only tend to promote the Emigration to our Country of substantial People from all Parts of Europe by the numerous Copies I shall dispense but will facilitate our future Treaties with Foreign Courts who could not before know what kind of Government and People they had to treat with." Franklin called on his friend Louis Alexandre de La Rochefoucauld 1743-92 to translate the documents with Franklin providing corrections and clarifications often included here as footnotes. According to Livingston Franklin had 100 copies of the work printed in quarto for presentation to various European dignitaries and had 50 of the octavo copies bound in calf. As our copy is noted to be the gift of La Rochefoucauld it seems possible that it was one of those 50. This publication had one more distinction noted by Livingston: it contains the first appearance in any printed book of the Great Seal of the United States adopted by Congress in 1782. [Printed for La Rochefoucault and Benjamin Franklin by] Philippe-Denys Pierres [and] Pissot, père et fils unknown

(YALE UNIVERSITY)
List of Tradesmen Representing the Yale Savings League 1886-1887
New Haven: Press of Tuttle Morehouse & Taylor 1886. Paperback. Small 4to. Stiff blue wrappers. 20pp. Very good. Text block truly near fine but mild bit of age toning to outer wrappers only. Probable sole edition of this unusual booklet printed by "Printers to the Students of Yale College" being a collection of full-page advertisements for local businesses. According to the explanatory foreword titled "Cash Basis" "Tickets of the League will be supplied gratuitously to every student of the University" -- and presumably when presented to these merchants the student would receive a special student price. But students are warned that "Tradesmen request that there be no unnecessary display of 'League' tickets when purchasing as the discounts offered may excite jealousy on the part of townspeople. Students are also requested not to lend their tickets to friends." The first full-page advertisement is ironically for "Ammunition Guns Etc." from the Office of A. A. Kellogg. Other ads include a shoe store stationers drug store laundromat furniture store florist optician photographer etc. As both the printed front wrapper and the title page note "Not to be taken from the Room" -- an admonition that perhaps was obeyed for copies of this pamphlet are quite scarce. (YATES, Richard, Jr) (1860-1936)
Judge Richard Yates
Chicago: Phillips Greenwald & Schmohl n.y. Broadside. Folio 19" X 17½". Good plus. Original single vertical and horizontal mailing folds visible but not weakened; lightly age toned with homely brownish water spots scattered throughout clearly visible but not terribly disfiguring; edges slightly trimmed not affecting his likeness but slightly impeding upon the large "J" at lower left. Near the lithographer's credit at lower left the "Union Label" or seal for the L.I.P. & B.A. appears. A handsome life-size head-and-shoulders three-quarters pose of the up-and-coming ex-judge with "Judge Richard Yates" along the lower margin in a large typeface. Undated but likely 1901. The 40-ish Yates -- who with hair parted down the middle and handlebar moustache would fit nicely into any barbershop quartet -- gazes thoughtfully to the viewer's right. His turn-of-the-century outfit includes a high-buttoning suitcoat open to reveal a vest elaborate striped tie and stiff starched collar -- all nicely accomplished in this fine example of the lithographer's art. Yates had served as a county judge from 1894 to 1897 then won the governorship on the Republican ticket in 1901 serving until 1905 and not seeking reelection; in 1919 he was elected to Congress and served until 1933. Yates' father Richard Sr. 1815-73 served in Congress 1851-55 as Illinois' war-time governor 1861-65 and as senator 1865-71. Despite prominent browning this large and striking image is an appealing and scarce piece of political ephemera. Phillips, Greenwald & Schmohl unknown
