Twenty-Seventh Annual Fair of the Schuyler County Agricultural Board Rushville Ill. 1883
Cincinnati: Russell & Morgan Printing Company 1883. Very good. Color lithographed poster 42" x 14.5". Chipping and soiling at margins old folding creases but still presents very nicely. Currently shrinkwrapped on foamcore. Images show horse and foot races and a selection of livestock including cattle sheep geese pigs and goats. Text advertises sack wheelbarrow and fast-mule races in addition to more standard racing fare as well as music by the Rushville Silver Cornet Band. The printing firm Russell & Morgan was formed in 1867 and began printing theatrical and circus posters placards and labels. In the early 1880s they began printing playing cards and they eventually became one of the largest playing card manufacturers in the world under the name United States Playing Card Company. Two 1914 Issues of The North Shore Review the "Only Newspaper in the World Edited Exclusively by Women
Evanston IL 1914. First Edition. Softcover. Good. Volume 1 No. 1 January 31 1914 and Volume 1 No. 14 May 2 1914 of "The North Shore Review" a little-known weekly newspaper published in Evanston Illinois that billed itself as the first paper with an all-female staff. Ironically enough it was founded by a man. John C. Shaffer Publisher of the Chicago Evening Post and several other papers announced his intentions for the paper in December 1913 along with the appointment of Hetty Cattell then a writer for the Rocky Mountain News also owned by Shaffer as Managing Editor. Although it was to be "run as a regular paper and not as a woman's publication" it was pronounced to be "in sympathy with the suffrage cause." Shaffer explains that "this issue of THE REVIEW is the culmination of a plan I have had I mind for more than a year of publishing a paper devoted to the interests of the Progressive Movement. The State of Illinois has invested women with new priviliges and likewise had imposed upon them new responsibilities--the right to vote and the right to hold office. THE REVIEW will be one of the means of point out to the women of Illinois their duties and obligations as citizens. It will seek to bring to their thought the new Progressive movement its aims and purposes and what it has thus far accomplished." Colorado suffrage activist Lillian Hartman Johnson was a staff writer and contributed a regular column on Women in Politics. The paper ran regular stories on local and national politics also had a lighter side including a Society column Household Hints Fashion Notes and cartoons that centered on the battle of the sexes. Despite an early enthusiastic public response the Review failed to capture enough advertiser interest and folded in 1916. We locate just three holdings in OCLC at the Evanston Public Library Northwestern and oddly the Long Beach CA Public Library. <br /> <br /> Physical description and condition: Issue #1 is 16 pp 12" x 17" has a smoke odor and leaves are detached at the spine. Issue #14 is about 17.5" x 23.5" has a fainter smoke odor and some chipping along a horizontal fold. Good. unknown

Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon. Foot of Washington St. Philadelphia
Philadelphia: Ives pr. & stationer 1862. Folding trade card 2.5 x 3.75 inches with views of the Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon and the attached hospital on the front and back and text inside. Light soiling; very good. The Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon was "staffed by volunteers and provided relief for Union troops on their way to or returning from battlefields in the South. Its services included warm meals temporary housing medical services and washing facilities. From its opening on May 27 1861 to its closing on December 1 1865 over 800000 men were assisted in this saloon and served over 1025000 meals" Smithsonian. This card was made specifically for the 50th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers who spent December 20th 1862 to January 7th 1863 in Philadelphia before departing by sea for duty in the Port Hudson Campaign in Louisiana. The unit's regimental historian later noted that the regiment "received every attention and the most generous hospitality" at both the Union Saloon and the nearby Cooper Shop Volunteer Refreshment Saloon and concluded that "words can hardly express the kindness lavished upon the soldiers by the people of this patriotic city during the war." The interior of the card welcomes the regiment includes a roster of the field staff and line officers present in Philadelphia and provides a list of places of interest that soldiers might wish to visit while in the city. Unique Collection of Illinois Central Railroad Company Correspondence Relating to the Surveys and Plans to Construct a Railroad Line from Dyersburg Tennessee to the Obion River in the Upper Embankment of the Mississippi River Floodplain Dated 1897-1900.
Chicago: Illinois Central Railroad Company 1897. Handwritten. Very Good. No Binding. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. 87 pages 22 manuscript 61 typed and 4 telegrams. Almost all individual correspondences signed. This collection of correspondence documents the late-nineteenth-century planning and negotiation necessary in constructing an Illinois Central Railroad Company ICRR branch line connecting Dyersburg Tennessee to the Stevens Lumber Company track at the Obion River. This project envisioned during a period of rapid railroad expansion displays the economic importance of regional development via railroads at the turn of the twentieth century. The planning of this line would ultimately contribute to the formation of the Chicago Memphis & Gulf Railroad Company in the early 20th century. This collection likely assembled and retained by David Sloan acting Chief Engineer of the ICRR includes engineering reports drafts of contracts cost estimates invoices telegrams and letters exchanged amongst railroad officials predominantly regarding the Dyersburg to Obion River switch. Main themes include route selection flood risk right-of-way acquisition grading costs and the financial feasibility of constructing thirteen miles of track through flood-prone terrain described here as being "overflowed every year." They also note the need for a wide right of way and extensive elevation measurements due to seasonal flooding along the Mississippi floodplain. The correspondence also illustrates the web of permissions agreements and financial commitments required to advance a railroad project even when constructing just thirteen miles of track. Because Stevens Lumber Company and the citizens of Dyersburg were primary financial backers their interests also heavily influenced decisions. There were also discussions about a line connecting a southern alignment along the Chester tract to the Stevens Lumber Co. track a line from Dyersburg to the "Joe Stinger place on the old channel of the Mississippi River" and a line from the Obion River to Carruthersville and Tiptonville. This project eventually evolved into a line extending from Dyersburg to Tiptonville first independently organized as the Dyersburg Northern Railroad Company and later renamed the Chicago Memphis & Gulf Railroad Company. Deaccsessioned though it's hard to imagine why from the New England Historic and Genealogical Society with related markings. Wrappers chipped at the edges and partial detached at spine. Binding sound and text clean. An excellent source of local historical and genealogical information for Framingham Massachusetts and vicinity this pamphlet provides the names of more than 500 land owners listed by Ward along with a short description of the person's real estate holdings e.g. "Barn 17 acres mowing and pasture 2 acres peat meadow 14 acres deer swamp" or "Buildings Homestead 22 acres Meadow 4 acres Clay Pit lot 7 1/2 acres" followed by a valuation for each element of the real estate as well as for their total "personal estate" if any. Statistical tables at end provide demographic details numbers of people involved in various occupations and interesting information about the numbers and types of buildings mills factories shops barns etc. land acres of tillage land divided by crop livestock and equipment for the textile industry looms spindles carding machines in Framingham. Variety Iron Works York Pa. print
Philadelphia: Pomeroy Whitman and Company 1876. Very Good . 1 double-leaf print from the 1876 Atlas of York County Pa. Signed "Ray Del." Contains an aerial view of the ironworks with inset illustrations showing sections of the house front department and the machine shop as well as several close-ups of machinery. Also shows a steam locomotive on the train tracks running in front of the ironworks. The ironworks was located on W. North Street in York. The company was founded in 1840 by Elisha Geiger and Samuel Bechtol; other partners during the 19th century included Alexander Small Edward G. Smyser and Smyser's sons. "E.G. Smyser" appears over the central door in the print with "Variety Iron Works" above that. In 1877 it opened an office in Baltimore where much of the ornamental ironwork was sold. The company also produced iron castings for J.W. Fiske Co. in New York City beginning in 1869. The company continued to operate until 1941. As of 2013 the central building was being used by the York Academy Revinoal Charter School. In Very Good Condition: slight staining along edges not impacting the image; solid and otherwise clean. The 3 volumes in the second series are not ex-library volumes one does have two oval end page school stamps. The index volume very good with a spine end bump in the glassine jacket that has a spine edge tear. No dust jackets issued. Complete first edition 30 volume set plus a 1961 limited edition reprint of the 1927 Index volume 31 volumes total. Series I 27 volumes Series II 3 volumes. Blue cloth with gilt spine lettering. Western People's Magazine Vol. 1 No. 1 - Vol. 2 No. 24; 1834-35
Cincinnati OH: Published by H.S. Barnum Stereotyped and Printed by J.A. James 1835. Hardcover. Good. Bound volume containing 32 issues of Western People's Magazine a bi-weekly illustrated periodical published in Cincinnati beginning on March 1 1834. Some issues bear the addition imprint of Sandford and Pope Alexandria Louisiana. Most issues are 8 pages a few are 6 and each measures about 10.75 x 6.25 inches. The 32 issues are bound chronologically but four issues from the time period covered March 1 1834-February 7 1835 are lacking Two leaves are missing large sections and one issue is missing nearly all of the final leaf. The binding contemporary marbled paper boards with leather spine is heavily worn and the front board is nearly detached. The pages are tanned but generally clean with mild to moderate scattered foxing and some marginal tears. The first pages of two issues have sizeable ink stains. Little seems to be known about the magazine's publisher H.S. Barnum although he published several books some in partnership with an H.L. Barnum. Neither appears to be connected to P.T. Barnum. The content is an eclectic mix covering topics described as specific to a western audience e.g articles on "Western Life" and "Western Forests"; descriptions of natural wonders; Indian lore; natural history; mining and manufacturing; American and world history; tourist destinations; science; and more. . Western Stock Journal Volume 2 No. 7 August 1913
Oregon City OR: Grant B. Dimick 1913. Softcover. Very good. 9" x 12" pp. 171-194 stapled binding. Light soiling old dampstain to back cover but still very good. Single issue of this scarce magazine which billed itself as the "only journal on the Pacific Coast published in the interests of stock men" and "devoted exclusively to to livestock modern dairying methods and good breeding." It was founded in 1912 by Judge Grant B. Dimick a lawyer and Clackamas County Court judge who was then a well-known and highly respected citizen a condition that was not to last. He was a bank president head of the Willamette Valley & Southern Railroad and a five-term Mayor of Oregon City among other accomplishments. His agricultural bona fides came from his ownership of a 530-acre farm where he raised cattle sheep and pigs. The Journal offered practical advice and news for farmers as well as a healthy dose of Oregon and Pacific coast boosterism. It was published only until 1915 when it was purchased by and merged with the Western Farmer. Dimick went on to defraud as many as 500 people -- railroad men clerks storekeepers laborers widows and farmers -- in a Madoff-worthy scheme in which he sold fake mortgages securing clients by paying a higher-than-average interest rate and doing a disappearing act with a suitcase full of cash when his deception was uncovered.
