Near fine. Tight bright and superb trio consisting of the LAST THREE ISSUES of this monthly which was founded in 1899 as a ladies' fashion magazine whose real purpose was to showcase the American Fashion Company's dress patterns. By the 1920s it had become one of the largest women's magazines in the country and by 1931 boasted circulation of more than 2.5 million copies. It changed ownership in 1937 and was merged with another late 19th century women's magazine "The Delinator" but after two years ceased publication. The first of these three issues features amongst its usual selection of specials fiction and feature articles a complete novel by then-popular Margaret Culkin Banning "The Open and Shut Case" the second features Faith Baldwin's short story "Literary Shrine" and the third features Fannie Hurst's short story "Play That Thing." This bound volume includes a choice autograph addition: Tipped to the front flyleaf is an Autograph Note Signed from Faith Baldwin 1p heavy stock 5½" X 3¼" correspondence card Norwalk CT 17 December 1960. Addressed to Delmar Reiter. Near fine. In part: "Swamped. Col. Blizzard: ice now -- so glad you liked Xmas story. I'll have a different type in Jan. issue Good Housekeeping Yes I've known Yankee ever since it started. I know the publisher too." Signed simply "Faith" the whole penned in her typical green ballpoint. A wonderful trilogy of the final three of this famed monthly with excellent letter from one of their best-known contributors. This copy with an important inscription: "James Ford Bell Jr. from Grandmother Heffelfinger August 14 1916." James Ford Bell Jr. was the eldest son of the founder of General Mills and what is now the James Ford Bell Library at the University of Minnesota. James Jr. was known locally as the CEO of Red Owl Food Store chain and was also a noted conservationist. His "Grandmother Heffelfinger" was the wife of Christopher B. Heffelfinger one of the authors of this book who from 1861 through 1864 served in Company D of the famous First Minnesota Infantry Regiment rising in rank from sergeant to captain shortly after the Battle of Gettysburg. After serving the full term of his three-year enlistment Heffelfinger was mustered out at Fort Snelling in May 1864. After a brief appointment as a relief agent in the United States Sanitary Commission in 1864 he re-enlisted in April 1865 and was appointed a major in the First Minnesota Regiment of Heavy Artillery. Heffelfinger died in 1915 while this book was about to go to press although he did read through the manuscript and made suggestions "which have been adopted in the text as it now appears." Searles Taylor Heffelfinger and two others also deceased were the members of the "Coville Commission" who had charge of the preparation of this history. <br/><br/> Easton & Masterman, printers hardcover books

Sears was a preservationist historian and writer. According to the Fruitlands Museum website fascination with Bronson Alcott and his experiment win Transcendental living at Fruitlands led Sears to the Harvard and Shirley Shakers whom she befriended and admired as much as Alcott for their ingenuity spiritual devotion and industry. When the Shaker community closed in 1917 Sears brought the eighteenth-century Shaker office to Fruitlands furnished it with Shaker artwork implements and artifacts many donated by the Shakers themselves. Subsequently Sears enlisted the help of the Peabody Museum at Harvard to develop a small but exquisite Native American collection and later still she built the Picture Gallery to house her Hudson River School landscapes and nineteenth-century vernacular portraits. This book is a result of her intimate knowledge of the Shaker community. This is an exlibrary copy from the Sturgis Library in Barnstable Massachusetts on Cape Cod the oldest library building in the country. Library marks include barcode bookplates stamp and pencil. Spines show and boards show wear. Removeable remnants of sticker on spine. Interior clean and tight. Decorative cover. Originally owned by noted collector and noted Bostonian William Sturgis Bigelow an early Trustee of the Sturgis Library and bears his bookplate as well as that of the library. Bigelow was a Boston Brahmin/hedonist famous for his all-male nude parties on tiny Tuckernuck Island off the shores of Nantucket. Bigelow and his guests wore pajamas or nothing at all until dinnertime when formal dress was required. A staff of servants provided food and fine wines; the library contained 3000 volumes"spiced with racy French and German magazines" one chronicler reported. Henry Adams described Bigelow's retreat as "a scene of medieval splendor". The front free endpaper is printed with a copyright notice on the recto and prior appearance notice on verso. Original olive-green cloth with gilt spine lettering. 20 x 15 cm. There was a variant in blue cloth priority unknown. A good copy in good plus dust jacket. Moderate stains to both covers along and near the joints. The binding is a bit fragile internally cracked between most gatherings however all contents are holding well stitching is intact and the hinges are sound. Foxing to the pages facing the plates but only faint marginal foxing to the plates themselves. Jacket shows tiny tears to the head of the spine panel and upper corners a short 2 cm closed tear at the bottom of the front hinge and a pinhead-sized hole near the top of the spine panel. FIRST EDITION. Joseph Lacy Seawell 1869-1936 a native of Raleigh was an attorney and for many years the clerk of the Supreme Court of North Carolina. This collection of essays several of which were previously published in The New York Times includes recollections of court cases and of lawyers and judges Seawell knew plus musings on various episodes in American legal history and the history of North Carolina. Seawell discusses state laws regarding women provides a defense of capital punishment defends slavery and laments the impact of Reconstruction on the North Carolina legal system. In one chapter Seawall recounts the 1897 trial of Henry Crichton an African American waiter for attempted murder in Lynchburg Virginia. In A Negro who Prepared Whites for College he discusses John Chavis who ran an all-white school in Granville County and educated Gov. Manly and other prominent North Carolinians. Another chapter is devoted to Thomas Blacknall a former slave who became a wealthy slave-owner himself. Seawell also discusses episodes in Andrew Jacksons life including his duels with Waightsill Avery and Charles Dickinson and the origin of the term lynching. At the end are two biographical addresses: one by Junius Davis on Supreme Court justices Alfred Moore and James Iredell pp. 261-291 and the other by R.W. Winston on Leonard Henderson chief justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court pp. 293-314. Archibald Henderson provided the foreword and a blurb on the dust jacket.
