Shaw & Shoemaker 16408. cfSabin 11823 pp. 7. A collection of eight pamphlets relating to international law and the violation of American neutrality during the Napoleonic Wars. The correspondence and reports relate specifically to the attack on the American frigate the Chesapeake off the coast of Virginia by a British ship of war the Leopard in June of 1807 and the impressment of members of its crew into the service of the British Navy. The Secretary of State writes: "Were it allowable that British subjects should be taken out of American vessels on the high seas it might at least be required that the proof of their allegiance should lie on the British side. This obvious and just rule is however reversed and every seaman on board though going from an American port and sailing under an American flag and sometimes even speaking an idiom proving him to not be a British subject is presumed to be such unless shewn to be an American citizen. It may safely be affirmed that this is an outrage and an indignity which has no precedent.". The United States attempted to protect its waters and nationals by passing the Embargo Act of 1807 which closed American ports and banned American ships from going to sea. Frequent interception of American ships to impress American citizens was a major cause of the War of 1812. Soft cover. City of Washington: A. & G.Way, 1808. Paperback

The Convair F-106 Delta Dart was an all-weather interceptor aircraft designed and produced by the American aircraft manufacturer Convair. The F-106 was designed in response to the 1954 interceptor program. Envisioned as an imagined "Ultimate Interceptor" it was a development of the F-102 Delta Dagger and commenced as the F-102B prior to being redesignated by the United States Air Force USAF. The F-106 was designed without a gun or provision for carrying bombs instead carrying its AIM-4 Falcon air-to-air missiles within an internal weapons bay its clean exterior was beneficial to supersonic flight. Major differences from the F-102 included the adoption of the more powerful Pratt & Whitney J75 turbojet engine heavily redesigned air inlets along with a variable-geometry inlet duct to suit a wide range of supersonic speeds application of the area rule to the fuselage shaping and a general increase in size. On 26 December 1956 the first prototype performed its maiden flight. After flight testing demonstrated lesser performance gains than anticipated the USAF ultimately only ordered 350 of the planned 1000 F-106s. Becoming operational in June 1959 the F-106 was the primary all-weather interceptor aircraft of the USAF through much of the Cold War era; it ended up being the final specialist interceptor to be used by the service to date. It was never used in combat nor were any export opportunities secured. During the 1960s a competitive evaluation between the F-106 and the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II determined the latter to be marginally superior yet the type continued to be operated for a further two decades due to extensive demand for the F-4 in other roles. Convair proposed various improved models of the F-106 typically focused on the radar communications and other avionics but none of these schemes were pursued. In one high-profile incident over Montana on 2 February 1970 an unmanned F-106 recovered from a flat spin after its pilot had ejected belly landing relatively intact in a snow-covered cornfield; it was recovered and continued to be flown for numerous years afterwards. The F-106 was gradually withdrawn from USAF service during the 1980s as the arrival of newer air superiority fighters particularly the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle had made the role of dedicated interceptors obsolete. Numerous F-106s would be operated for a time by the Air National Guard. Many withdrawn aircraft were promptly converted into target drones and redesignated QF-106 under the Pacer Six program which were used up in 1998. A handful of F-106s were operated by NASA for experimental purposes such as the Eclipse Project through to 1998. United States, Department of the Air Force unknown

UNITED STATES, General Land Office - C ROESER, Principal Draughtsman, GLO G L O
Louisiana
Washington D.C.: General Land Office printed in New York by Julius Bien lithographer 1879. Color-lithographed map. A very detailed colour-coded map of Louisiana showing towns rivers roads railroads among other landmarks.

The General Land Office was founded in 1812 as an independent government agency responsible for the surveying and disposition of land in the public domain. Prior to the Civil War much of the attention of the GLO was fixed on the settlement of such land east of the Mississippi which had resulted from military bounties and cessations by the original thirteen states. The end of the Civil War the Homestead Act the completion of the Trans-Continental Railroad and the military campaigns against Native Americans in the West with resulting treaties that "transferred" land ownership to the United States together engendered an incredible increase in westward settlement and expansion. Newly-admitted states and newly-created territories west of the Mississippi were primed for settlement. Between 1866 and 1876 the GLO surveyed over 200000000 acres of land in the public domain for settlement in New Mexico Idaho Dakota Nebraska Montana Colorado Wyoming and elsewhere. As the official surveyors of these remote areas and with access to military information the maps of the General Land Office were far and away the most accurate and detailed of the western states and territories published to that time. Indeed these large-scale official maps became the basis for future maps of those regions by commercial cartographers. In 1876 the GLO headed by S.S. Burdett published an atlas containing 18 maps on 19 sheets California being on two sheets showing the regions of the United States with newly surveyed and plotted public lands. Although the GLO had issued individual maps of the United States to accompany their annual report in 1866 and 1868 the 1876 Geographical and Political Atlas of the States and Territories sometimes referred to as The Centennial Atlas was the first atlas to be published by the department. The incredible growth of settlement in the west coupled with new exploration and surveying in the short time following the 1876 atlas engendered a second atlas to be published by the General Land Office between 1878 and 1879 i.e. where the present example is from. Like the Centennial Atlas the maps were composed by the chief draughtsman in the GLO Charles Roeser Jr. The maps were done on a large scale and are consequently very detailed. Chromolithographed by Julius Bien each map is colour coded to clearly depict land plotted for settlement the locations of the general land offices Indian territories county divisions towns rivers roads railroads etc. Furthermore like The Centennial Atlas the Atlas of the States and Territories over which Land Surveys have been Extended was produced for official purposes and distributed to members of Congress government agencies each land office the post office the railroads and other large entities and was not available for public distribution. The limited distribution of this atlas coupled with its large size accounts for its great rarity today; very few copies are known to be in private hands and no copies were in the famed collections of Rumsey Streeter or Graff.

Phillips Atlases 1405. General Land Office [printed in New York by Julius Bien, lithographer] unknown
