Homer, Winslow
THE ARMY OF THE POTOMAC--A SHARP-SHOOTER ON PICKET DUTY Original Wood Engraving
New York: Harper's Weekly 1862. Original printing of Homer's most sought-after Civil War wood engraving. Image: 9 1/8 inches by 13 3/4 inches; Sheet: 10 1/2 x 15 3/8 inches. This first only impression was printed in Harper's Weekly November 15 1862. Because of the development of more accurate telescopic rifles The American Civil War saw a much greater use of sharpshooters; it is likely that Homer had occasion to see one in action during the weeks he spent sketching scenes on the battlefront. The wood engraving Homer produced was almost an exact copy of his painting of the same subject. The most notable change he made in the engraving was the inclusion of a flask hanging from a branch--something that does not appear in the painting. Both the woodblock and the electrotype plate were destroyed after the engraving was printed. This is a very good impression in very good condition. Margins slightly trimmed. First Edition. Single Sheet. Very Good. Illus. by Winslow Homer. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Fine Art Print. Harper's Weekly

The diarist Philip Hone 1780-1851 was born in New York City of which he was elected Mayor in 1825. Hone become wealthy in the auction business amassing a fortune of at least a half-million dollars before he was 35. After retiring from business in 1821 and touring Europe he became prominent in New York's civic social and charitable affairs. According to the DAB his "immortality rests upon the secret diary which he kept from 1828 to 1851 and which furnishes the best extant picture of New York life in that period. Most of his activities are therein described. He was intimate with Webster Clay J.Q. Adams and Steward and often entertained them at his home. Washington Irving Henry Brevoort and John P. Kennedy were close friends and he knew Cooper Halleck and other writers well. A tour of the Western prairies in 1847 left him with impaired health but he maintained his diary till within five days of his death." The diary contains many valuable descriptions of life in New York City including a captivating account of the Great Fire. See Howes H620 and Larned 1901. Reprint of the 1927 Enlarged 2-vol set. Bondi was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. The story takes place shortly before the Civil War and centers on the young son of a poor country preacher who decides he wants to become a doctor much to his father's displeasure and his mother's secret approval. From the very beginning he is shown to be an ingrate full of embarrassment and shame for the shabby living conditions and tattered hand-me-down clothes grudgingly provided to the family by the community in place of payment for his father's services as preacher. He is forever getting his sweet mother played by the great Bullah Bondi to sell off cherished family heirlooms to meet his selfish wants and with no appreciation at all for the sacrifice. As the years pass and he grows into manhood the conflict between father and son becomes harsher by the day until finally the two come to blows which pushes the son to leave town and pursue his dream of becoming a Doctor. He works his way through medical school by cleaning the headmaster's apartment and with the continued sell-off of his mother's things but soon after entering medical school his father becomes ill and dies. Now his poor mother is left all alone to fare for herself with only the friendship of the town drunk to lean on for moral support. As the Civil War escalates the young doctor is enlisted as an army surgeon and after several years away at war without even as much as a letter his mother</p> Stratford Press
