Abner Kneeland 1774-1844 was a former Universalist minister who became a popular freethinker and reformer in the 1830s. He lectured widely and founded and edited the Boston Investigator a weekly social-reform journal that advocated public schools equality regardless of race or sex a better life for working people and the abolition of slavery and imprisonment for debt. After stating in print that he did not believe in God Kneeland was indicted for blasphemy in 1833 under a Massachusetts law enacted in 1782. He nedured multiple trials resulting in hung juries but was finally convicted in 1838 and--despite vocal support from Ralph Waldo Emerson William Ellery Channing William Lloyd Garrison Bronson Alcott and other leading reformers--jailed for two months. A very good copy with rubbing and fraying to corners and spine ends bookplate of Canadian bookseller and collector G. Ducharme on front pastedown handwritten date of December 15 1872 on front free endpaper evidence of an erased ink stamp on title page. Lacks tissue guard over plate facing p. 35 all others present. Contents sound and clean. This is the rarest and most desirable edition of this work as it is the only one to contain 20 rather than 10 mounted photographs. Kneeland 1821-1888 was a physician naturalist and Professor of Zoology and Physiology at MIT. This book is based on his first visit to the Yosemite Valley in 1870 and includes a narrative of his trip from and return to Boston. "Kneeland made every effort to obtain current and accurate information and each of the later editions of the guide incorporates new material.Weston J. Naef in his book Era of Exploration the Rise of Landscape Photography in the American West 1860-1885.comments that the photographs 'are curious because there is no evidence that Soule a talented landscape photographer was ever in California.which suggests that he might have purchased the negatives from a California photographer not an uncommon transaction'" Currey & Kruska 225. A large number of local luminaries contribute the descriptive text that faces each image with their signatures reproduced. This copy bears a unique autograph addition: Koenig died in 1964 but this copy bears a fine presentation inscription in blue ballpoint on an inner flyleaf -- "To Lily Tolpo / A dear friend / Bill & Alice Koenig / Anna Belle Nimmo / Aug. 1995." Bill Koenig and Anna Belle Koenig Nimmo born 1923 are Koenig's children and Lily Tolpo 1917-2015 was a noted sculptor who in recent years sculpted Freeport's life-size Lincoln and Douglas Debate monument. Laid in are two heavy stock 5" X 3" card with some inked notes by Tolpo about Freeport and Lincoln and also a color postcard depicting "Whoofle Koenig the Magic Dragon" a large sculpture by Tolpo given to the city of Freeport by Anna Belle Koenig Nimmo.
