Tight and attractive later printing of this important set first published between 1960 and 1971 a mixed set though complete being the second half of Nevins' great 8-volume set "The Ordeal of the Union." The first volume is subtitled "The Improvised War -- 1861-1862" the second volume "War Becomes Revolution -- 1862-1863" the third volume "The Organized War -- 1863-1864" and the fourth volume "The Organized War to Victory -- 1864-1865." Tipped to the front flyleaf of the first volume is an excellent content Typed Letter Signed from Nevins 1p 8½" X 11" San Marino CA 1961 November 25. Addressed to Ralph G. Newman 1912-2000 founder of Chicago's noted Abraham Lincoln Book Shop. Very good. On "Henry E. Huntington Library and Art Gallery" letterhead Nevins chats cordially about the Civil War centennial. In part: "I know how much you are interested in a dignified and constructive publications program for the Centennial Commission. To date little of an enduring character has been accomplished. I have made out a tentative list of tasks. that I think might be carried through. Publication of the ten separate titles listed in the central section could be arranged I am sure with Knopf or Scribners or Harpers if the right authors were enlisted." Signed simply "Allan" in blue ballpoint. A handsome set with a choice autograph addition. Nevins 1890-1971 won the Pulitzer prize for "The Ordeal of the Union" 1947-71. "It has been noticed in some of our schools that the larger young men were unwilling to belong to a reading and spelling class choosing to devote all their time to "cyphering" or other higher studies." The Committee goes on to discuss the importance of being able to read well. The schools also show a very low attendance rate. The Committee also suggests that parents be involved in the education of their children. Sounds like things have not changed much. Light foxing and soiling. Very good condition. In May 1899 Newmark Subdivided The Tract Owned By Him And His Nephew After Contracting With William Mulholland To Design And Construct A Suitable Water System For The New Settlement. Richard Heber Newton 1840-1914 was born in Philadelphia. He was rector of All Souls' Protestant Episcopal Church in New York City from 1869-1902 and was a leader in the Social Gospel movement a supporter of Higher Criticism of the Bible and sought to unify Christian churches in the United States. In 1903 he briefly served as first and last pastor of Stanford Memorial Church at Stanford University see Wikipedia. There are two major flaws: the booklet has pulled away from the cover at the top staple and the booklet has been folded over length wise undoubtedly to fit in a man's back pocket. The cover is still pretty securely attached to the booklet. The interior is very clean and there's no foxing or soiling to any of the pages. 40 pp. with several pictures of the Midway Church and cemetery. Some light surface soiling on cover a couple of small old stains. Comes to you in an acid free document bag for storage. I can have it in the mail to you tomorrow.
