The author was acting as war correspondent for the London Times. Ref: Howes 540; Sabin 74402. We do wonder who this early owner was - Richard Lee! "When the early secessionist threats were made by American southerners, William Howard Russell, a British journalist of international repute, was sent to the United States as a correspondent for the London Times. Besides dispatching letters to the Times, he kept a detailed personal diary in which he described the people he encountered, the social and cultural milieu, and the political confrontations. This new edition of Russells journal consists of selections from the complete Diary, which was originally published in 1863. Arriving in New York in March 1861, Russell traveled extensively through North and South, visiting both rural and urban areas, talking with both blacks and whites. Since Russells reports were known to sway public opinion, Union and Confederate officials, including Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis, were anxious to cooperate with him. Pleading immunity, Russell refused openly to favor either side, but did feel free to issue highly critical evaluations of people, events, and customs. The American public became increasingly wary of his reportage as nationalistic feeling deepened on both sides. After he published several unpopular commentaries, the American press generally lambasted Russell for snobbery and for enjoying undeserved privilege. By 1862, he was denied access to essential news sources at the front which thus concluded his mission as a war correspondent. Few people traveled as widely throughout the United States in 1861 as did Russell and no other journalist interviewed as many Union and Confederate leaders in so short a time. His balanced appraisal of social and political life at the advent of the Civil War provides a fascinating description of Americans as no American could have seen them. Note: bears the gilt emblem of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths on the top cover and a presentation plate inside awarding this as a prize to James Steele of the Stockport Grammar School in 1849. <br/><br/>Howes R553; Wagner-Camp-Becker 139:1; Graff 3620; Rittenhouse 499; Field 1336; Saunders 3137; Sabin 74501. A former British Army officer Ruxton became a voyageur before he traveled through Mexico on both sides of the Rio Grande River. He journeyed fom the south to the north of Mexico - but he observed nothing comliementary about the men of Mexico. "No other contemporary of the Mountain Men has been so much quoted - J. F. Dobie." Ruxton "rode a mule northward through Santa Fe Taos to Bent's Fort and on to Independence and even Chicago ! in 1847. WITHDRAWN stamp and other typical library markings. Bound in the original red cloth with blindstamped rules and ornaments on the front and rear covers and elaborate gilt decorations on the spine. Gilt is still bright and shiny. Spine ends chipped. Moderate edge wear. Light scattered foxing. Describes the adventures of the author a British army officer. "Contains valuable accounts of pioneer life; the Indians; mines; beaver and buffalo hunting etc. Describes the author's journey through Texas New Mexico along the Red River and the Arkansas; down the Missouri to St. Louis; by steamboat to Peoria and thence by stagecoach to Chicago."
