This copy has been signed by the author with an inscription on the half title page. This book is in Very Good condition and has a Very Good- dust jacket. The book and its contents are in mostly clean bright condition. The text pages are clean and bright. The dust jacket has several small to smallish edge tears nicks and spots of rubbing and wear especially to the spine ends and corners. "Originally Balboa Island was little more than a mudflat surrounded by swampland. Today's Newport Harbor emerged only after dredging millions of tons of silt. In the late 1860s James McFadden and his brother Robert purchased a large portion of the future site of Newport including the oceanfront of Newport Beach much of Balboa Peninsula and the sandbars that were to become Balboa Island and Newport Harbor's other islands. They immediately began subdividing and selling their property. They established a successful fishing wharf on the Balboa Peninsula and the townsite of Newport Beach. In the late 1860s the bay was used as a landing to load hides tallow hay and other goods for export. In September 1870 Captain Samuel S. The map consists of two parts. The eastern half unfolds to 23" wide by 27" tall. The western part is 21.5" wide by 27" tall. Both are skillfully and attractively hand colored. The maps are backed in linen as issued. They are housed in the publisher's original green cloth portfolio which is printed in black and embossed in gold on the front cover and in blind on the rear. Modest dampstaining to upper fore-edge corner of all interior leaves present but not pronounced. All leaves firm modestly toned with little foxing evident. Former owner signature in pencil on front flyleaf. Portion of map present at rear mostly lacking showing portions of western Missouri southern Iowa and "Indian Territory" later Oklahoma to the west. Rear pastedown also contains original bookseller's tag from Chicago Book Store S. F. Gale & Co. Chicago. This Civil War officer served as lieutenant colonel later brevet brigadier general with the Second Corps where he was chief commissary of subsistence; he was awarded the Medal of Honor for his October 27 1864 service at Hatchers's Run Virginia where he led part of a brigade that captured Confederate soldiers and their flag and saved artillery. Clipped portion of a printed Document Signed 8½" X 2¼" n.p. n.y. Near fine. Below the printed line "therein expressed; that their services were rendered as stated and were necessary for the public service" Smith signs in full large and bold in brown ink on a dotted line at lower right. Below his signature his rank "Lt. Col. & Chief / 2nd Corps" is handsomely penned in another hand. Likely clipped from a routine military form of some sort. unknown

A leaf between front flyleaf and main title which may have contained a folded broadside of axle gauges has been clipped from this copy otherwise new/as issued no publication information or date provided. "This dissertation examines in detail the growth importance and influence of the wood wheel industry in America the most important of the accessory trades associated with the carriage and wagon industry. It has grown out of an industrial archeology investigation of Hoopes Bro. and Darlington an extant wheel manufactory in West Chester Pennsylvania." This work was first compiled in 1971 as a Ph.D. dissertation and has since been edited and expanded. It is a study of 19th-century mass-production mechanization of the wheel industry concentrating on the physical aspects: influences that led to as well as the consequences and results of mechanization. The leading physical model used and investigated was the Hoopes Bros. & Darlington Co. of West Chester Pennsylvania considered to be the largest wheel manufacturer on the East Coast of the United States at one time. The 19th century brought about the standardization of the wood wheel through the methods of mass-production. The major significance of the wheel industry was in the application of machine production methods to the manufacture of vehicle parts. In using these methods wheelmakers led the way for the rest of the vehicle industry in placing carriages and wagons within the reach of nearly every family by the end of the century.
