1946 Brand Book Twelve Original Papers Pertaining To The History Of The West
Denver: The Westerners 1947. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Fine/No Jacket. 242 Pp. Second Of The Denver Brand Books. Original Beige Cloth Printed In Brown. First Edition #467 Of 500 Copies. Book With No Wear Or Damage. Decorative Bookplate Of Colorado Governor Ralph Carr Showing Abraham Lincoln With An Open Book In Front And Three Books Behind Him; Also Decorative Bookplate Of Frank Stephen Dolley The Noted Western Collector. Later Ownership Signature Of Jpl Astronomer Ray Newburn On Verso Of Front Free Endpaper. Ralph Carr Was Born In 1887. His Father Was A Miner And The Family Moved Around To Several Colorado Towns Including Aspen And Cripple Creek. After Graduating From Cripple Creek High School In 1905 Ralph Went On To Study Law Earning His Law Degree In 1912. His Law Practice Took Him To The Town Of Antonito In Southern Colorado. After Living In Antonito For 11 Years Ralph His Wife Gretchen And Their Two Adopted Children Robert And Cynthia Moved To Denver. It Was Very Different From The Small Towns Ralph Had Lived In Most Of His Life. Ralph Had Become A Very Well-Respected Lawyer And When He Moved To Denver He Became Assistant Attorney General. In 1929 He Was Appointed By President Herbert Hoover To Serve As U.S. Attorney For Colorado. During This Time Gretchen Died And Ralph Continued Raising Their Two Children Alone. Eleven Years After Gretchen'S Death Ralph Married Eleanor Fairall. In 1938 Ralph Decided To Run For Governor Of Colorado And Won. Three Years Later The United States Entered World War Ii When Japan Attacked Pearl Harbor In Hawaii On December 7 1941. After The Attack Many Americans Began To Distrust Japanese Americans Even Those Who Were United States Citizens Fearing That They Might Be Spies. Because Of This The United States Government Forced Thousands Of Japanese Americans Mostly From California To Leave Their Homes And Live In "Internment Camps." However Unlike Many Others Ralph Carr Believed In Japanese Americans' Loyalty And He Did Not Send Japanese Coloradans To The Camps. He Believed That The Constitution Protected All Americans. When He Ran For The U.S. Senate In 1942 Ralph Lost The Election And Some Say This Was Because Of His Support For Japanese Americans. He Decided To Run For Governor Again In 1950 But He Died Just A Month Before The Election. He Was 62 Years Old. Soon After His Death Coloradans Began To Recognize That He Had Been Right That There Were No Cases Of Japanese Spies In America. Today Ralph Carr Is Remembered As Someone Who Stood Up For The Rights Of Others Even When His View Was Not Popular. He Has Been Memorialized In A Statue In Denver'S Sakura Square And In The Naming Of The Ralph Carr Memorial Highway And The New Ralph Carr Judicial Center In Downtown Denver. In 1999 The Denver Post Named Him Colorado'S "Citizen Of The Century." Ralph Carr Is Also Memorialized By A Plaque In The State Capitol That Reads "Dedicated To Governor Ralph Carr As A Wise Humane Man Not Influenced By Hysteria And Bigotry Directed Against The Japanese Americans During World War Ii. By His Humanitarian Efforts No Colorado Resident Of Japanese Ancestry Was Deprived Of His Basic Freedoms And When No Others Would Accept The Evacuated West Coast Japanese Except For Confinement In Internment Camps Governor Carr Opened The Doors And Welcomed Them To Colorado. The Spirit Of His Deeds Will Live In The Hearts Of True Americans." Frank S. Dolley Was Born In Maine Graduated From Pomona College In 1907 And Completed Bowdoin Medical School In 1911. He Settled Permanently In Los Angeles In 1929 Where He Was A Prominent Thoracic Surgeon. Beyond His Medical Interests He Was A Collector And Student Of The History Of The Western United States Particularly The Lower Colorado River.

The Westerners hardcover

Volz, McLeod and Mary Mosteller
The Woods
Sausalito CA: Graphic Arts of Marin Inc. Very Good. 1961. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Paperback. B&W Illustrations; This is an oversized paperback book. The book is in Very Good condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The book is in clean bright condtion. There is some beginning bumping and rubbing to the spine ends and corners of the book covers. The text pages are clean and bright. "McLEOD VOLZ AND MARY MOSTELLER have followed and photographed two children as they played freely and let their imaginations encompass the trees and flowers frogs and insects of Muir Woods. The show has an introduction by Harold Gilliam which makes it a plea for conservation: preserve open unspoiled areas where children may play and dream.Ironically the Superintendent of Muir Woods National Monument did not concur with Mr. Gilliam and the photographers of The Woods that children should be given such freedom for delight and wonder. The Woods shows children standing on the bases of trees to run their hands over the curly bark and playing by the edges of pools. The concession stand at Muir Woods in an action contested by the Northern California Civil Liberties Union allegedly banned the book from its shelves. The photographs of children so blissfully enjoying themselves were a bad example. Children today must stay on the paths." from "THE WOODS AT SAN FRANCISCO MUSEUM OF ARTBy Margery Mann- found in Art Forum Magazine. "Before the logging industry came to California there were an estimated 2 million acres 8000 km2 of old growth forest containing redwoods growing in a narrow strip along the coast. By the early 20th century most of these forests had been cut down. Just north of the San Francisco Bay one valley named Redwood Canyon remained uncut mainly due to its relative inaccessibility. This was noticed by William Kent a rising California politician who would soon be elected to the U. S. Congress. He and his wife Elizabeth Thacher Kent purchased 611 acres 247 ha of land from the Tamalpais Land and Water Company for $45000 in 1905 with the goal of protecting the redwoods and the mountain above them. The deal was facilitated by banker Lovell White and his activist wife Laura Lyon White. In 1907 a water company in nearby Sausalito planned to dam Redwood Creek thereby flooding the valley. When Kent objected to the plan the water company threatened to use eminent domain and took him to court to attempt to force the project to move ahead. Kent sidestepped the water company's plot by donating 295 acres 119 ha of the redwood forest to the federal government thus bypassing the local courts. " from Wikipedia . Jackson's Administration -- Annexation of Texas." Hermann E. Von Holst 1841-1904 was a German-American historian who authored a number of books on American history and politics this being by far his most influential. This pair are unique for their handsome custom bindings -- better yet both volumes are signed and inscribed by one of the translators Lalor: On an inner flyleaf of the first volume he pencils "J.M. Lynch / With the Kind regards of / John J. Lalor / June 18 1876" and on the inner flyleaf of the second volume he boldly inks "Gen. James M. Lynch / With the regards of the translator / J.J. Lalor / Milwaukee July 2 1879." Lynch died 1882 served as chief clerk at the Adjutant General's Office during the Civil War and was appointed quartermaster general in 1865. An absolutely superb pair quite scarce as such. Libraries were the main purchaser of most sets of Von Holst the result being that copies on the market tend to be worn clothbound ex-library sets.
