‎Austin: John Marshall & Co. State Printers 1858. First Edition. Softcover. Very good. pp 284 ix index in original sewn wrappers. Rear wrapper and final page of index detached but present some light staining to front wrapper and lower corner of first 40 pp not affecting text otherwise quite clean. Stitching loosening but holdng. Includes "An Act to Establish the University of Texas approved on February 11 1858 which set aside $100000 in United States bonds toward construction of the state's first publicly funded university. Also acts relating to the incorporation and relief of several different railroads; creating the counties of Archer Mason Menard Zapata Hardin Hamilton Kimble and Buchanan; and "An Act to permit free persons of African descent to select their own master and become slaves" approved on January 27 1858. Similar acts allowing for voluntary enslavement were passed in Florida and Tennessee the same year. Also noteworthy is a 43-page act supplementing and amending the Texas Penal Code that had been established in 1856 which provides an extensive list of criminal offenses and their statutory punishments including those for unlawful i.e mixed race marriage and a number of slavery-related offense. These are divided into those committed by whites inciting insurrection illegal transportation of slaves stealing or enticing a slave harboring runaways conducting business with slaves undue cruelty to and torture of slaves and those committed by slaves or free persons of color. Provides a history of Assumption Parish the first Catholic church in Waco was founded in 1870 and details of the work accomplished by a succession of priests Father Bussant Father Badelon Father Clancy Father Kelly and Father Heckman. This is followed by sections on the Academy of the Sacred Heart a convent school founded in 1873 and run by the Sisters of St. Mary St Basil's College a day school for boys founded in 1899 and the Providence Sanitarium a hospital and training school for nurses founded in 1905 and run by the Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul. ‎Gravestone & Monument Design and Sales Archive of F.J. Scholz & Son Evansville Indiana 1880s-1890s‎

‎Very good. Small archive consisting of: a 7.5" x 9.5" sketchbook titled "F.J. Scholz's Own Design Book" containing 38 hand-drawn designs for gravestones on 12 pages; a single 11" x 13 sheet with 9 hand-drawn monument designs by Charles Scholz dated 1885; two original photographs of monuments; six sales cards with mounted engravings of gravestone designs each with handwritten prices and notations in German; and an 1891 business card for the Scholzs' company Evansville Steam Marble and Granite Works. All materials in good condition with soiling abrasion and other signs of use. Frederick J. Scholz 1848-1936 was born in Nashville Illinois to German immigrants. He attended Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne then served as a clerk on a Mississippi River steamboat before moving in 1866 to Evansville where he founded Evansville Steam Marble and Granite Works the same year. His son Charles joined the business in the 1880s and in 1895 the firm name was changed to F.J. Scholz and Son. It was still operational as late as 1952. While running his business. Frederick Scholz also served as Census Commissioner for Southern Indiana in 1890 and was elected Indiana State Treasurer in 1894 serving two terms. The work in Scholz's design book and on the engraved sample cards is representative of a time when gravestones were becoming more elaborate and personal. Designs incorporate a range of religious and mourning symbols including crosses doves an anchor and bible a lamb nestled in a seashell a hand pointing upward hands grasped in friendship a weeping willow wreaths roses lilies and other flowers. One monument includes a complex carving of tasseled cloth draped over the stone another has detailed stalks of ripened corn running the length of one side. Makers of these stones--which were offered in both domestic and imported marble and granite--needed a way to showcase the breadth of their offerings. Often that was done through showrooms but this book appears to have have been used to help solicit business from customers far from Evansville. "Henry Knackstedt Inman McPherson Co. Kansas" is handwritten on the front pastedown and the same name is written at the bottom of the business card. An 1891 Kansas newspaper notes that "Henry Knackstedt representative of the Evansville Steam Marble and Granite Works of Evansville Ind. was in Haven Tuesday soliciting orders for the firm." That coupled with the fact that this collection of materials came to us from Kansas leads us to believe that these were essentially a salesman's kit of interest not only for the design elements but for what it shows about the scope and sale methods of the American funerary monument business in the late 19th century. unknown‎

The unidentified proprietor of the dancing school listed the students by class: Ladies Evening Class 56 students; Gentleman's Evening Class 56 students; Ladies Afternoon 44 students; Private Waltzing Lessons 17 students; and Children's Class 23 students. The 196 students are listed presumably by the date they joined the class with street addresses for each. ‎Wilkes-Barre PA: Hazard-Okonite 1944. Paperback. Good. 20 p.; 23 cm. Stapled. Printed in red and blue throughout. American flag on front. The Okonite Co. founded in 1878 was one of the original insulators of electrical wire and cable in the United States. Early customers included Samuel F.B. Morse for his telegraph network and Thomas A. Edison for the Pearl Street Generating Station the nation's first built in New York City in 1882. This publication honored Hazard-Okonite who were serving in World War Two. It includes various messages from fellow employees of the firm and lists all those who were serving in May 1944 with their contact information. Writing on the front including the name and address of Dom Servillo the secretary-treasurer of the Service Committee that produced the booklet. A very scarce World War Two item.
