It is best known for being a constant film site for movies such as Pretty Woman The Graduate The Wedding Singer The Mask & Forrest Gump. The assassination of Robert F. Kennedy in the kitchens of the hotel in 1968 sparked even more interest in the hotel despite its decreasing popularity since the tragedy. In 1989 the hotel closed to guests for good and its demolition to make room for a Robert F. Kennedy Community School occurred in 2005. Not found by us on OCLC. Rare. Schine Hotels unknown books

All of the train workers are posed for the photograph along with several men and a young girl in the background. A well-preserved pair of images in very good condition with good contrast and some wear and toning to mounts. unknown books

As advertised in the circular by the publisher the scenes of Reeder's book "open up a field entirely new in the world of fiction - the heart of the Sierras at the present time" ca. late 19th century. REMINISCENCES OF AULD LANG SYNE manuscript title including a chapter of adapted California Fiction entitled "WESTWARD HO"
Camp Nusseerabad India. 1860. 121pp. of manuscript text about 15500 total words. Original three-quarter calf and marbled boards. Boards edgeworn and lightly rubbed. Internally quite clean neat and legible. Very good. An interesting unpublished manuscript this is a novel in the form of an autobiography purportedly written by an American-born soldier in the British Army stationed in India in the late 1850s and early 1860s. The author describes his youth and early adulthood culminating with an account of his adventures hunting grizzlies in Gold Rush-era California. The chapter on Grizzly hunting in California called "Westward Ho" is copied with a few small adaptations from an article that appeared in the November 1857 issue of HARPER'S NEW MONTHLY MAGAZINE called "The Grizzly Bear of California." The remainder of the text develops several themes over the course of the work including the author's strained relationship with his wealthy father his youthful disillusionment with a career as a lawyer his friendship with a charming rogue named "Twadle" and his unsuccessful pursuit of love. The work also gently lampoons the character of the idle rich. It is unknown whether these other portions of the manuscript are also adapted from other published works or whether they are the product of the author's own imagination. Either way this manuscript is a very interesting example of mid-19th- century imaginative fiction and literary adaptation and worthy of further study. <br> <br> According to prefatory material this text was written in 1859-60 by Douglas D. Lindsay who identifies himself as a member of Company 7 of Her Majesty's 83rd Regiment stationed in East India at "Camp Nusseerabad." On a preliminary page he writes: <br> <br> "These 'Reminiscences of Auld Lang Syne' were written and presented by the author to his friend and gossip Thomas Smith of Her Majesty's 83rd Regiment and who in times to come as he glances over these pages will recall to mind the writer and 'wish him well wherever fate may have led him'; and he in turn will often think of his quondam friend while far at sea or in the deep piney woods of his native land." <br> <br> In several instances in the text Lindsay disrupts the narrative to offer asides to Smith providing a sort of post-modern authorial commentary on the proceedings. In a letter at the end of the text dated July 23 1860 Lindsay promises Smith that he will write a second volume "in which I propose giving you a few more passages from my experience in America - North - West and South intermixt with some jottings about the sea slavers smugglers etc. etc." It is not known whether "Lindsay" ever wrote this second volume. <br> <br> In the prefatory chapter Lindsay gives a sketch of his early life claiming to have been born "of a very ancient family who are said to be descended in right line from the Prodigal Son." He writes that he did not have a good relationship with his father and most of the assistance in his life was given to him by his deceased mother's brother. Lindsay says he eventually went to "the law school of old Y." later revealed to be Yale from which he graduated with a lofty idea of the law and jurisprudence. These beliefs were quickly deflated when he moved to the unnamed state's capitol city and set to work as a lawyer. Finding himself quickly in debt and unhappy he quit the law and moved back home. The next chapter in the book is entitled "A Screw Loose" and begins with Lindsay arguing with his father and being kicked out of the house. He departs leaving behind him most of his expensive wardrobe and ventures out in search of a friend named Twadle: <br> <br> "A young literary gentleman who was continually occupying the handsomest apartments he could find which he invariably vacated after a month of luxury. He was of a sanguine temperament and I will do him the justice to say that he always intended at the time of taking his rooms to pay for them. But so many extraordinary and unforeseen circumstances intervened between the day of his induction and pay-day that when that period arrived he regularly found himself in a state of unprecedented pecuniary depletion." <br> <br> Twadle was living in New York at the time and he and Lindsay decide to have a meal at Delmonico's. Of course they do not have enough money to pay the bill but Lindsay is rescued by his ever-helpful uncle who just happened to be dining there that evening. His uncle then takes Lindsay to his home welcomes him as a part of the family and gives him a job in his engineering firm. In the next chapter titled "Love Struck by Lightening" Lindsay describes his landlady's attempts to introduce him to eligible young women and his courtship with Sophia Walter daughter of a former governor. The romance fails when Lindsay discovers that his love has false teeth which horrifies him. <br> <br> The penultimate chapter comprising forty- one pages of the manuscript entitled "Westward Ho" is set in California during the Gold Rush era and is largely copied or adapted from a HARPER'S article of November 1857 called "The Grizzly Bear of California." Large portions of the manuscript are copied verbatim from the published article while in other places Lindsay makes adaptations or particularizes the story to himself. For example he mentions a "Hindoo Bear" in one passage and changes the name of the Grizzly hunter from "Colin Preston" in the published article to "Nathan Walker" in his manuscript. He also intersperses original passages which add to the story among the copied text. <br> <br> The section begins with Lindsay and a friend leaving Manhattan aboard a steamer bound for Chagres and then crossing the Isthmus of Panama. Lindsay then goes up the coast to Acapulco where he "secured passage in a crazy old polacca rigged schooner which was bound direct to San Francisco." The schooner is wrecked off the California coast with Lindsay as the only survivor. Next comes a long discussion of the California Grizzly and the "coastal range" in which it dwells followed by a recounting of Lindsay's providential escape from the shipwreck. He is rescued by a bear hunter called "Nathan Walker" "Colin Preston" in the original HARPER'S story a native of Arkansas who is described at great length. The rest of the chapter is filled with tales of Walker's bear- hunting exploits discussions of the nature of the Grizzly and the recollection of bear hunts in which the author participated with Walker often at great risk to his own life. <br> <br> In the final chapter comprising twelve pages and called "The Man in the Drab Coat" Lindsay tells a story of meeting an old Yale classmate of his in the Russian River gold diggings. His friend Robert had been quite successful in the mines saving some $5000 but was gravely ill and soon died. Lindsay promises him that he will collect all his money and deliver it to Robert's mother in the East. On his way home Lindsay stops in New Orleans and loses all of his own money in the gambling halls and leaves the city saddled with debt. Back in Troy New York he considers drawing on his friend Robert's money using it as a gambling stake to win back the money he lost in New Orleans. Late one night cold and seemingly hallucinating he is visited by a devilish figure "the man in the drab coat" who so frightens Lindsay that he resolves to give all Robert's money to his family as he had promised. <br> <br> An interesting work of adaptive and imaginative fiction meriting further research. hardcover books

A promotional book not a cookbook for California Fig Syrup a patent medicine employed as a laxative. Also called Elixir of Senna the concoction had no figs in it whatsoever. This booklet seeks to tie the "purity" and "excellence" of the product to similar qualities which at the time were seen by the public to reside in the State of California. And so the book is illustrated with images of notable scenery of the state including San Francisco's Cliff House Yosemite Santa Barbara and other popular sites. Union Hill is adjacent to Grass Valley. Detailed information for 1914-1915 including operating expenses profit and loss income expenses production vendors payroll cash bullion production tungsten production names vouchers insurance and marketing. Entries include operating expenses for the South Idaho Mine and names of the local companies they did business with such as Grass Valley Hardware Empire Mining Company Nevada County Narrow Gauge R. R. Company and Thomas Diggs Company an entry for Augustus D. Cox who was the Mine supervisor to very specific mining operating expenses for example: “Shaft Above 600’ Level†“Shaft Below 600’ Level†“Storage Dam 600’ Level†with expenses for mining tools hoisting compressing fire protection etc. A rare and unique Gold Country artifact this original handwritten Ledger offers compelling insight into an historic Mother Lode gold mine. The corduroy covers have some staining the rear leather corner has a corner chip the rear spine fold has a two inch half oval chip revealing the board beneath the front hinge is split and the metal spine has some rust internally the ink stamp of the Union Hill Mining Company on the front endpaper. Gold was discovered at Union Hill in 1854 the first recorded claim was in 1866 as Union Hill Gold Quartz Mine and Mining Stock Certificates for Union Hill Mining Company exist from the 1860’s. Although very profitable it appears Union Hill Mine opened & closed changed ownership &/or operators several times from the 1870’s until purchased by Idaho-Maryland Mines Company around 1920. In 2016 this historic mine was purchased by a gold mining company with plans to restart operations in the unexplored areas below the Idaho-Maryland Mine Property. hardcover books

Else very good. In a half morocco slipcase and cloth chemise. The first edition of an exceedingly rare Gold Rush pamphlet printed in the hallowed year of that epochal event. "Like many guidebooks for Europeans this pamphlet gives general information on California's physical features history and 'Notes for Emigrants' on the gold discovery. The portion on California's gold riches consists primarily of an article reprinted from the KOELNER ZEITUNG of January 14 1849 which in turn summarizes R.B. Mason and others. The guide mentions the many German settlers in the Sacramento Valley and speaks proudly of Captain Sutter" - Kurutz. <br> <br> Only four institutions worldwide report a copy of this book: the California State Library the University of California at Berkeley Yale and the State Library in Berlin. COLUMBIA MINING LAWS caption title
Columbia Ca.: Gazette Print 1853. Broadside 10 3/4 x 8 inches. Printed in three columns. A bit of light foxing mostly in margins. Near fine. In a folding cloth clamshell case spine gilt. A rare broadside printing of the laws of the Columbia Mining District in California in 1853 created and enforced by the miners for their own self-government. The seventeen articles all deal with regulations for mining and claims. The first nine set out rules for making and operating claims. The next three address foreign ownership of claims. Article 10: "None but Americans and Europeans who have or shall declare their intentions of becoming citizens shall hold claims in this district." Article 11: "Neither Asiatics nor South Sea Islanders shall be allowed to mine in this district either for themselves or for others." Article 12 sets out a punishment for any miner who sells a claim to an Asian or a Polynesian. The final five articles set out rules for enforcing the laws including the creation of a Miners Committee and a system of binding arbitration. According to the text the laws were adopted "at a meeting of the Miners of the Columbia Mining District held Oct. 1st 1853." and the laws are signed in print by "C.H. Chamberlain Pres." and "R.A. Robinson Sec'y." <br> <br> "The item is of basic importance.as an example of how the California miners - or men beyond the reach of government anywhere else in our States and Territories for that matter - banded together and enacted and enforced codes of law for their own protection" - Eberstadt. The COLUMBIA GAZETTE which printed this broadside was according to Kemble the second newspaper to operate in Columbia starting operations in the fall of 1852. The first newspaper in the area the COLUMBIA STAR apparently printed only two or three issues in October-November of 1851 before the printing press was destroyed by vandals. <br> <br> Greenwood locates only three copies at the California Historical Society and the Bancroft Library and the Streeter copy which was sold at the Clifford sale in 1994. Rocq lists a copy at the Huntington Library. OCLC adds copies at Yale Library of Congress University of California at San Diego Stanford and DeGolyer Library at Southern Methodist University. A rare and interesting example of the search for order in the tumult of the gold rush. <br> <br> The Streeter copy sold to Howell for $550 in 1968. New York: E. Fabreguettes Fils & Morra n. d. Circa 1850. Wooden case with a hinged lid and hook clasps seller's label to inside of lid. Interior has carved compartments for the brass scale and weights including a small compartment for grain weights with a hinged lid. Light general wear to case and weights brass balances a bit tarnished. Only contains the three grain weights so perhaps others missing VG overall. Suspension gold scale made of brass with troy and grain weights. Troy weights nested ranging from 1/16 to 4 oz; grain weights include 2 6 and 10. Case: 1-11/16" x 6-11/16" x 3-1/8". Scale when hanging: ~8-1/4" x 7-1/8" brass balances 2-1/2" in diameter. <br/><br/>In 1850 the New York firm of E. Fabreguettes Fils & Morra importers of French fancy goods attempted to capitalize on the California Gold Rush by adding gold scales to their wares. Notices in several of the city's papers in late October and early November of that year including the Monday November 4th edition of The Evening Post advertised the following: "GOLD SCALES. The subscribers offer for sale the best and most approved pattern of French Standard Gold Scales adjusted exactly to the United States Mint Standard of every size and weight. These scales are so made that they take but very little compass when packed and are much more neatly and conveniently finished than either the English German or American article. As we have all that are made of this pattern parties having orders for shipment to California are solicited to examine them before purchasing elsewhere. Also for sale a variety of French fancy goods accordeons sic &c. E. Fabreguettes Fils & Morra 73 William Street up stairs." E. Fabreguettes Fils & Morra was located at 61 Maiden Lane until at least 1847 moving to their William Street address in 1848 or 1849. No later advertisements for these scales appear to have been issued in New York newspapers leading us to conjecture that the firm's venture into the gold mining market was perhaps not particularly successful. It is of course impossible to say with any certainty if this particular scale was originally used during the Gold Rush though this one here offered was purchased in California giving rise to possibility it may very well have been. All writing clear & sharp entirely legible. 9-5/8" x 7-1/2" <br/><br/>An interesting & information-laden letter detailing the contractual & financial agreements between two individuals engaged in mining along with sums paid for divers aspects of same to wit: "to John and Peter for pork" .75 "balance on beef to the butcher down Town" 4.15 and "balance on account with King" 9.86. We note athat the value of labor is recognized e.g. "it was agreed by J. S. Bigalow and I that as George was sick most of the time that the cooking that he did should pay his part of the living for which our bebts were principally contracted." <br /> <br />A nice primary source ADs documenting divers aspects of mine life amongs those so practiciing. unknown books

According to the wrapper "this book is made of the finest letter paper and of the size of a folded letter which with an envelope will not exceed the weight of a single letter and is more convenient than paper in sheets." Since the sufferings of those gone there have been made known & likewise how small the chance of making money enough to fetch them back even many who were calculating to go have given it up at least for the present." Bifolium i.e. 4 pages of lined paper 23 lines per page ~ 10 words per line ~ 900 words. 9-3/4" x 7-5/8" <br/><br/>While no year is written on the ALs itself we posit 1851 as the Maritime Heritage website shows the only visit to San Francisco by the Washington was July 21 1851 arriving from Baltimore per a newspaper entry in the Daily Alta. That said per a online perpetual calender March 14th came on a Tuesday in 1852 not 1851. We lean towards 1851 as the actual year this letter was written. And this historic letter is replete with interesting content written by a man bound for the promised land of California. Chamberlin is from Boston writing a newsy letter his sister posted from the Harbor of Pernambuco Brazil March 14 where the ship in taking on supplies including coal. He describes the voyage thus far the expense of the company that sent him and the trip ahead around the Horn expecting to arrive in California in about 30 days. He describes conditions aboard the ship the places he has visited the people he has met in Brazil his own experiences with the heat and fever and more. New York 1849. 1p. of a bifolium docketed on verso of second bifolium leaf. Mailing folds slight edge discoloration else fine. An intriguing note regarding life insurance for a forty-niner traveling to California in 1849 with Henry Webb and John Woodhouse Audubon. The note reads: "Langdon H. Havens wants a life insurance permit for California to go over the Overland Route in company with persons bearing dispatches from our Government in a Company of 100 or more. He wants to leave for Washington immediately." Perhaps the twenty-six-year- old Haven sometimes spelled Havens originally intended to join a safe government- sponsored expedition from Washington but he was in fact among the 100 Forty-Niners who embarked on a famously ill-fated overland expedition led by Army Colonel Henry Webb with John Woodhouse Audubon son of the famous ornithologist as his second in command which left New York on February 8. <br> <br> The company proceeded by ship train stagecoach and riverboat to New Orleans and from there by steamer across the Gulf of Mexico to the mouth of the Rio Grande where they arrived on March 13 - an odd overland route dictated by Webb a veteran of the Mexican-American War. There disaster struck. A dozen men died of cholera the company's money was stolen and leadership conflict led Webb to leave the company with a dozen followers. Some of the remaining stalwarts including Haven followed Audubon onward trekking for seven months through Mexico and Arizona the survivors finally reaching San Diego in November. Some then took a boat to San Francisco; others continued overland to the gold fields. As meticulously recorded by Audubon a naturalist and painter in his own right the entire venture has gone down in history as "one of the most poorly-planned" Forty-Niner expeditions "on record." Haven though nearly dying en route was one of the fortunate few who "made it to California." An appealing note dated in the famous year of the California Gold Rush that eerily anticipates the dangers inherent in overland travel in America in the 19th century. unknown books

Wallace in San Francisco. Wallace was a former California Supreme Court judge and the sitting Superior Court Judge. Apparently he lost the election and was appointed San Francisco's Police Commissioner. Barry owned the Star newspaper and was a tireless campaigner against corruption and for electoral reform. Barry's papers are at the Bancroft Library at UC Berkeley BANC MSS 96/186 c. A rare publication documenting the political atmosphere of this election. No copies listed on OCLC. W. A. A good reference each chapter appears to be an examination of the subject with facts and figures as well as personal comments. The agricultural section provides directions for planting certain crops and how do deal with the Californian soil and pests. The chapter on grapes provides the history of the California grape industry lists the top grape producers Haraszthy having 500000 vines followed by John Rains with 165000 . There is a description of the hunting available including ox-hunting which means to hunt ducks driving an ox in front of you. There are sections on the lumber industry fishing cattle and house-building as well as the residents. Pages 380-385 contains a listing of "Californianisms" including the term "bumming" as in "bumming around" Sabin 32272 A. Roman and Company, New York: W. J. Widdleton unknown books

Justice Department Official Writes In 1894 About Ongoing Indian Depredation Cases
He served as a Mississippi state legislator and assistant attorney general under President Grover Cleveland. Later he was a judge on the United States Court of Claims. TLS. 2pp. 8" x 10". July 27 1894. Washington D.C. A typed letter signed "Charles B. Howry" on "Department of Justice" letterhead. It is addressed to "John A. Robinson" of San Francisco concerning Indian depredation cases: "Your communication of the 19th instant relating to the taking of testimony in the Indian depredation case of Spring & Hendry is at hand. There are requests on file in this office for the taking of testimony in several thousand cases and I have heretofore explained to you that the force of the office is too limited to meet these requests promptly. I beg to again state that I cannot name a time when proof can be taken in any case from California outside the preferred cases. The Spring & Hendy case is not a preferred case. The pending deficiency bill carries an item providing an appropriation for the investigation of judgments in the Indian depredation cases amounting to over four hundred and fifty thousand dollars which judgments were rendered before I took charge of this department. The necessary attention to investigate these judgments and dispose of the preferred cases will not admit of any proof being taken in either cases for some time. To your inquiry if I could not have U.S. Assistance Attorney Dodge take the testimony on behalf of the United States in Indian depredation cases I have to say that I can not. ". The letter has a flamboyant autograph and is in fine condition overall. An unusual California letter showing that not all the Native Americans had been subdued by the 1890s unknown books
