‎New York: The South Manchuria Railway Company 1933. A promotional piece extolling "The Progress of Manchuria" following the establishment of Manchukuo a puppet state of the Empire of Japan in northeast China and Inner Mongolia produced in conjunction with the 1933 Century of Progress International Exposition at Chicago. Established in 1906 the Japanese-owned and operated South Manchuria Railway Company or Mantetsu for short was charged with a government-like role in managing the rail transportation and urban planning after the Japanese invasion in 1931.<br/> <br/> "It is conceded by all that the rapid industrial agricultural and educational development of Manchuria during the past 28 years is chiefly due to Japanese investments and the enterprise of her industrialists and skilled technicians. In all this important work the South Manchuria Railway Company has taken the lead and it is largely through the foresight confidence and intelligence of the administration of this great artery of commerce that has made Manchuria a prosperous and peaceful land for the past twenty years. This explains why the great migration of nearly 8000000 to Manchuria took place in the last few years. Here they found a land of peace and plenty until the war lords taxed and exploited them to the limit so they declared their independence as did the Americans in 1776."<br/> <br/> This folding brochure opens to a railway map of the region which shows four sections under construction. There are also 12 photographic images highlighting Manchuria's historic sights modern infrastructure and abundant resources. Printed in color on a 12" x 18" sheet of white paper that folds to 4" x 9" 12 panels. A fine fresh example with just a hint of edgewear. ‎Santa Barbara Beach—On Road of a Thousand Wonders—On Line Southern Pacific‎

‎San Francisco ca. 1905. 20†x 24†in original oak frame with a title plaque 25.5†x 29.5†overall. Frame manufacturer label of “Sanborn Vail & Co.†of San Francisco on verso. Stamp on verso of “Grover C. Drake District Passenger Agent 937 State Street Santa Barbara California.†CONDITION: Some very small losses at edge of image in lower left corner very good overall. <p>A large and very appealing advertising photograph of Santa Barbara Beach and vicinity issued by the Southern Pacific Railway.</p> <br /> <br /> <p>This turn of the century photo likely taken on the weekend captures the lively scene at Plaza Del Mar built in the 1890s showing men women and children sitting on benches or strolling about. Many of the women wear white dresses and hats and a few hold parasols. Several boys in bathing suits sit in the sand in the lower right foreground. Los Baños del Mar opened 1901 shown here with picnic tables on the roof appears just to the left of the crowd. At center-left a Japanese tea garden and a sign identifying it as such can be seen on the roof of a building and to its right is a storefront with a sign reading “Boulevard Card Store.†Cabrillo Boulevard with its palm tree-lined promenade stretches along the beach at center right. Hotel Potter appears in the distance on the left and foothills and mountains loom in the background.</p> <br /> <br /> <p>The phrase “Road of a Thousand Wonders†which is included in the photo’s title was used by the Southern Pacific Co. from the 1900s to at least the 1920s. One of the great American railroad systems the Southern Pacific was established by the “big four†of western railroad building: Collis Huntington Leland Stanford Mark Hopkins and Charles Crocker. After completing the Central Pacific line from California to Utah in 1869 the four partners started the Southern Pacific as a branch line into southern California. It was incorporated in 1884 and the railroads making up the Central Pacific system were leased to the Southern Pacific Co. the following year. The Southern Pacific system grew to serve fifteen states in the West and Southwest with lines reaching the Pacific and Gulf coasts.</p> <br /> <br /> <p>A striking image of the Santa Barbara Beach scene produced by the Southern Pacific Railroad.</p> <br /> <br /> <p>REFERENCES: Southern Pacific Railroad at Britannica online.</p> [San Francisco?, ca. 1905.] unknown‎

‎The Western Land and Townsite Co Limited; [Railroads]; [Canadian Pacific Railway]‎

‎New Towns in Saskatchewan and Alberta on the Canadian Pacific Railway‎

‎Winnipeg: The Western Land and Townsite Co. Limited 1911. Map. Very Good. 55 cm x 86 cm. Map. Printed in red and black. The map directs the reader to the townsites on that year's construction which they state: "practically all of which will afford excellent openings for all lines of business necessary in a new and developing country and particularly to the divisional point: Coronation. The lines under construction are printed in red. The map directs those looking for plans and prices to contact the Land Department of the Canadian Pacific Railway Co. F.T. Griffin the land commissioner or J.L. Doupe the assistant land commissioner. A large and informative map of two Canadian provinces which experienced development at the hands of railroad tycoons and the descendants of European colonists. A fascinating look at Canada's political and railroad history. With three vertical folds and five horizontal folds the map has about three small splits all at the folds but is holding up quite well. ‎Theodore Roosevelt / Santa Fe Railroad‎

‎Theodore Roosevelt. Document Signed With A Secretarial Signature. U. S. Government / Santa Fe Railroad Land Exchange;‎

‎Washington DC: United Sates Land Office 1904. Document. Very good. Folio Document measuring 10.5†x 16â€; Partly printed document with red embossed seal of the General Land Office at bottom left signed by President Theodore Roosevelt lower right Secretarial Signature Washington D. C. June 3 1904. A Land Grant Of Federal Lands To The Santa Fe Pacific Railroad Company. This land a forty acre parcel east of Gila & Salt River Meridian Arizona Territory as part of the Grand Canyon Forest Preserve owned by the SFRR is being exchanged with the United States for a forty acre parcel east of the Mount Diablo Meridian in California. This “swap†was for land east of San Francisco Bay for a parcel near Phoenix Az. Also signed by a F. McKean Secretary & C. H. Brush Recorder of the Land Office. An unusual land grant. There was a controversy in 1902 regarding these exchanges. The Railroad wanted to consolidate its lands and wished to trade uneven numbered parcels for even numbered ones. Their argument was that this would benefit all. Some members of TR’s cabinet were opposed but the argument that grazing lands Arizona could not be parceled out if they were not contiguous won the day and the exchanges were executed. This is a simplification of the event and there were other arguments. This document is a vestige of this series of exchanges. United Sates Land Office unknown‎
