Original Hand-Colored Lithograph Certificate with Photographic and Calligraphic Additions
Pottsville PA: Order of Railway Conductors 1910. Original lithograph certificate 57.75x35.75cm. printed in black on heavy cream stock accomplished in calligraphic manuscript and hand-colored with mounted original albumen photographic portrait lozenge 8cm in diameter. Stock has suffered some fairly heavy frame burn to extremities and verso blank along with some brief glue residue and paper flaws from where the stock was previously mounted not affecting image or text. Still overall Very Good the colors and photograph vibrant. Initiation certificate to ORC member William A. Nye of the Pottsville Division No. 416 P&R Ry. Philadelphia & Reading Railway Caboose No. 90073 dated July 10 1910. The head of the certificate shows a lovely red engine steaming past a grassy field over which is mounted Nye's photographic portrait though the largest portion of the piece is devoted to an oversized symbol of the ORC a large circle 23cm in diameter divided into three equal parts depicting an arm with a coupling an arm with a lantern and whistle and an arm entwined with a snake-like chain. 4to 11 ½ x8 ¾ original law calf morocco illustrated 4 134 85102 114 2 iv 64 pp. Some scuffing and wear to covers slight gouge to front joint chipping to edges. Two plates detached one with a chipped corner. Overall very good. Organized by the War department under the direction of Jefferson Davis who was Secretary of War at that time a collection of volumes was produced in the quest for the best route for a railroad to the West. Jefferson Davis wrote part of the introduction to this series and outlines the goals of the project. This report is on routes explored in Northern California and Oregon. Specifically the expedition was to look for a railroad route crossing the Sierra Nevada near the source of the Carson River and to see if it was feasible to connect the Sacramento valley with the Oregon Territory. Most of the color plates in this volume are located in the first three parts of the publication which is focused on topography geology and botanical subjects. 4to leather spine and tips with marbled boards 36 Illustrations include 21 tinted/color lithographs one folding diagram two folding maps and a couple of black and white plates 36 14 136 127 175 pp. Binding with some wear at the spine and extremities hinges cracked some pages are a bit loose plates all present but probably not bound in correct order folding maps have a few tears some staining to front endpapers but not into the balance of the text plates and text show some aging foxing and browning but most plates resonably are clean. One of the great sources of information on the west the Pacific Railroad Reports also contains some great illustrations. This installment Vol. III is no exception. Included are some interesting and colorful pictures of the Mojave Indians and their territory. This report contains intelligence on an expedition near the 35th parallel which took the southern route due west to the Pacific Ocean from Fort Smith Kansas that was conducted by Lieutenant A.W. Whipple and assisted by Lieutenant J.C. Ives. Ives would make his own mark on western expansion a few years later in his travels on the Colorado River. The substantial amount of information on various Indain tribes makes this installment an important one. Since many of these volumes are broken for the plates they are getting somewhat scarce. Thick folio 9 1/2 x13 original cloth gilt lettering includes a couple of maps 1972 pp. Binding has a little wear bottom extremities showing as a result of shelf wear overall binding is bright and clean pagination a little unusual but complete normal aging page 352 with tape repair a few margin tears but nothing significant and not affecting text; overall a very nice copy. Henry Varnum Poor 1812-1905 started producing his railroad manual just before the Civil War. They include a wealth of information on railroad operating and financial statistics. It provides the miles operated by different railroads and gives data on the financial their performance. These efforts in providing financial information on railroads would ultimately lead to providing credit ratings on corporates and governments. An intriguing ALS sent by the supervising construction engineer for the Northern Pacific Railroad decrying the poor quality blasting powder which had been supplied to them to launch work on laying the track from Kalama to Tacoma Washington Territory.
Kalama W.T.: William Walker March 12 1871. 4to. 7.5 x 9.75 in. 2 pp. on ruled paper approx. 180 words in clear crisp cursive retaining original mailing folds slight toning very slight dustsoiling NF. This letter reveals the setbacks engendered by poor construction materials in the Washington Territory as the Northern Pacific raced to extend its rail lines across the country hoping to become the second Transcontinental railroad after the Union Pacific. The letter from Walker to Sprague opens with “I herewith inclose sic a statement of the walking Boss in relation to the Powder which has been furnished thus far on the work & from personal inspection of several samples I think his estimate low. In all my former experience in public works I have never seen as bad powder attempted to be used. One keg examined seemed to be nothing but charcoal. It seems to have been damaged by dampness as nearly all is more or less caked solid.†He goes on to explain that he feels that the contract should be suspended with the powder company and if they have any complaints they can could come down and “inspect what is on hand. That which has been opened thus far has either been used or destroyed. . . .†Despite the setbacks Walker’s team managed to begin laying track on March 19 1871 a week later and by September the first 25 miles was completed and by the end of the year the Northern Pacific line extended to Tenino. Eventually after the Panic of 1873 bankruptcy in 1875 and other setbacks as well as purchasing majority interest in the Oregon Steam Navigation Company the Northern Pacific was able to complete the line from Kalama to Tacoma with connecting ferry the “Tacoma†which transported passenger cars across the Columbia River from Kalama W.T. to Goble Oregon up until 1909. Jackson County WV 1861. 8x5" 4pp bifolium on illustrated patriotic stationary manuscript letter in pencil and ink on two separate dates. Transmittal folds a few light stains but very legible and clean. <br /> <br /> Early Civil War letter from an S.A. Bartlett of Company K. 11th Regiment West Virginia describing life in Camp Curtis and early movements of railroad duty. Bartlett writes to his brother to describe the weather and camp life while inquiring as to his receipt of registers and photos previously sent by Bartlett. The two dates are December 7th and 9th of 1861 with the second date describing the movement from camp to a location called "burnt bridge" 25 miles below Sulpher sic Spring on the railroad:<br /> <br /> ". this bridge was burnt by the secsesh. once and it was garded by MO boys and I gess they was more scart than hurt but I am glad that we hav moved. We hav got a very pleasant plase hear it is on a hill about 200 feet above the water. Their was not onley 2 Companeys taken from the Rigement - they was Co. C. and Co. K. the rest is left at Sulp Springs. I dont think their is enny more danger hear than their was at Camp Curtis."<br /> <br /> <br /> Bartlett directs further correspondence to St. Louis "as long as we are on the move" reflecting the fluidity of early deployments. A terrific company photo archive composed of 136 original silver gelatin images documenting the construction of the new double-track Lower Maumee River Bridge for the Toledo Terminal Railway in Toledo Ohio. These images show the removal of the original single-track bridge introduction of the 353 foot long swing span including a centralized control switch machine operating the plunges constructions of coffer dams stone piers installing spans and much more.

All bound w/ sliding metal Acco-fastener at gutter margin manuscript title on front cover of thick paper preserved in the original file folder toning edgewear tears & creases still VG exemplar w/ mimeograph instructions mounted inside front flap detailing that these were to be returned to the Chief Clerk of the Roadway Dept. This amazing photo archive chronicles the bridge removal and construction coffer dam building foundation work and construction project on the Lower Maumee River Bridge for the Toledo Terminal Railroad by The Foundation Company of Pittsburgh & New York. The Toledo Terminal Railroad was completed in 1903 and at one time owned by most of the major railroads that passed through Toledo forming a loop around the city providing an essential link to all of the industrial factories around the city. The Lower Maumee River Bridge was originally erected in 1902-1903 as a single track truss bridge but by the Roaring 20s needed a major upgrade to double-track. These images show in reverse order the construction of additional piers building of coffer dams massive cranes installed to remove the old trusses and install new trusses as well as build the swing span. Along with photos of the control systems the entire intricate process of removing the original single span and installing the double-track trusses is depicted as well as the new swing span in operation. The Foundation Co. was founded in 1900 by Remington Jarrett and Moran and grew rapidly in the opening decades of the 20th century often securing numerous large projects including the building of several dams on the Ohio River to offset flooding railroad bridges and more. It should be noted that the MichiganRailroad project Bridge Hunter and several other references list this still existing and operational railroad bridge as having been constructed in 1902-1903 as double-track but these images clearly show the massive three-year project replacing the original from 1927-1930. Sepia-tinted photograph mounted on dark gray board 11 x 14 w/ caption inscribed in negative at lower fore-edge slight rubbing edgewear NF. This splendid original photo visually chronicles the first train to cross the newly built Rainy Lake Bridge connecting Ranier MN with Fort Frances ONT and which today serves as one of the busiest rail crossings between the U.S. and Canada serving more than 20 trains a day. An 1893 gold rush kicked off the development of the area with the gold quickly petering out it became the center of timber operations and paper mills. The Canadian Northern began their spur to run down to the bridge being constructed at the end of 1907 and the Duluth Rainy Lake & Winnipeg which was a subsidiary of Canadian Northern Railway extended their line North and both lines completed the bridge by April 12th 1908. On Tuesday April 28 1908 at 6:20 PM the first train shown here in the photo crossed the bridge with most of the prominent railroad and business men from Minneapolis Brainerd Duluth Winnipeg and International Falls invited to attend. A.W. Lindvall fl. 1906-1908was partner with Roland W. Reed 1864-1934 noted photographer of Native Americans who at the time of this image operated his primary studio in Bemidji MN. By June 1908 regular service was inaugurated from Duluth to Winnipeg across the Bridge. Boston: Avery Supply Company 1892. With a map of the Boston and Maine Railroad with connections including to New Brunswick and Nova Scotia and St. Johnsbury VT. A pocket friendly 6.5 by 4 inches when folded folding out to a full 19.5 by 24 inches double-sided. An extremely well preserved example for such a delicate item designed for short term use and to be discarded. The thin paper still completely useable with no stains or spots and just very uniform toning to ivory a little loss or splitting at a few fold points that is quite minor and not intrusive. In all this is in remarkable and fully original state. A VERY NICE SPECIMEN AND WELL PRESERVED BOSTON AND MAINE RAILROAD EPHEMERA. A large and extensive folding timetable for trains from Boston to numerous points north for the summer of 1892. It includes an attractive engraved cover panel and a map of the system measuring about 8.5 by 5.5 inches. One side contains the timetables for the various through lines; trains to Maine with various branches into New Hampshire Vermont and Canada. It includes information on Pullman Car service and steamship line connections. The reverse side is the daily schedules for the shorter lines; the "Workingmen's Trains" between Boston and Newburyport and Saugus Swampscott Lawrence Gloucester and the Essex branches. These commuter lines are now run by the MBTA the sole line that remains of the through service trains is now part of Amtrak. Avery Supply Company unknown

Made under the direction of the Secretary of War in 1853-4 according to Acts of Congress of March 3 1853 May 31 1854 and August 5 1854.
Washington: Beverley Tucker A.O.P. Nicholson & Thomas H. Ford 1855-1860. One coloured lithograph sized 11.25 x 8.5 in. extracted from the original Explorations and Surveys volumes a fine crisp copy. First edition of this view of Fort Vancouver Washington Territory while future General Ulysses Grant was stationed there as a quartermaster Captain. The original survey was one of the most important and massive compilations of exploration reports and scientific data ever published about the Trans-Mississippi West. Published by the Federal Government at the urging of Secretary of War Jefferson Davis and the result of numerous reconnaissance surveys of exploring four major routes surveyed for the Pacific Railroad -- these reports represent the first attempt at a comprehensive systematic geographical exploration of the Western regions of America and made possible the first reasonably accurate topographical maps of the West. Vols I & XII parts 1 & 2 are still considered some of the best early sources of information on the Pacific Northwest the Puget Sound and the tribes of Washington Territory. Of the eleven official expedition artists the most prominent is the renowned John M. Stanley 1814-1872 most widely known for his portraits of Native Americans and their way of life. Warren's Map of the Territory of the United States from the Mississippi to the Pacific Ocean Vol. XI was considered by Howe as the best cartographical work on the West up to its time and was used for 25 years following as the definitive reference. Letters and Documents from the Development of Western Railroad Lines Late 1800s to Early 1900s
United States 1936. Forty-two letters with several miscellaneous documents circulars stock offerings etc. Conditions vary with some items worn and quite fragile; most excellent. The Chicago Burlington and Quincy Railroad CB&Q was formed in 1855 by a consolidation of several other western railroad companies. The company and its subsidiaries known for their sleek diesel Zephyr trains operated extensively throughout the midwest west and Texas throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Today its former passenger operation has been assumed by Amtrak and its freight operation continues as the BNSF Railway. The Burlington Cedar Rapids and Northern Railway BCR&N operated between 1876 and 1903 and was succeeded by the Rock Island Line.<br /> <br /> Offered here is a small collection of letters and documents pertaining to the relatively early days of the CB&Q and BCR&N alongside later correspondence from an Iowan who was writing a history of Iowa railroads.<br /> <br /> Earlier letters include discussions of plans for the extension of the CB&Q lines; for instance railroad official O.W. Palmer writes:<br /> <br /> “The other day at the meeting I gave Mr. McClure some changes to Leavenworth – Since that time I have gone into the question a little more thoroughly and find that to be consistent we would have to reduce a great many points in Western Iowa where there is no competition whatever no need of a reduction – I have therefore concluded not to make any changes except where we have to meet some other fellows rate.†August 7 1894<br /> <br /> On the reverse of this letter and one other is an attractive map of the many CB&Q lines between Chicago and Denver/Cheyenne. <br /> <br /> Also from around this time are several letters from William W. Baldwin discussing railroad business in both an official and unofficial capacity with BCR&N President Charles J. Ives. In 1895 Baldwin tells Ives about a scalping scheme on the BCR&N for which several conductors are fired April 20 and in 1896 about a silver-backing newspaperman:<br /> <br /> “A fellow named Hyskel has persuaded certain silver idiots here to loan him $200 or $300 with which he has started a morning daily called the “Burlington Democratâ€. It is a violent vindictive anarchistic silver sheet and Hyskel himself a thorough crook of the bigoted sort although personally decent and mild enough. Has your company given them transportation They will be after it hot foot. Our folks here have refused him – saying he will have to get it under a regular advertising contract. These are to be made January 1st. If you can put him off until then I think the paper will die before January. They own no press nor any property – are simply trying to bull it through past the election. It is easy enough to put them off there are plenty of good reasons why it ought to be done. There is not a meaner silver organ in the state. It was started as a silver venture purely. I suppose Tracy will get them B.CR. N. transportation if he can. He is the same variety. It is such examples that make the situation so full of menace danger to all business.†October 19<br /> <br /> “Tracy†is Samuel K. Tracy then Solicitor general for the BCR&N the son of Judge Joshua Tracy who was president of the line until his death in 1884.<br /> <br /> Later correspondence is mainly between Baldwin and Albert N. Harbert of Iowa; Harbert was writing a history of Iowa railroads and Baldwin had apparently written a number of pieces on the topic the collection includes a mimeographed bibliography of his works. Harbert had a particular interest in the china dinnerware used on the lines.<br /> <br /> Of interest to historians of western railroads around the turn of the century. unknown

The pay schedules and specified duties encompassed deadheading for the company pilots computing overtime coaling engines compensation for overtime lay-over days and double-head restrictions on the Tacoma Junction - South Tacoma Centralia & Clequa Centralia & Rainier runs. Following Edward Harriman’s death in 1909 and Lovett taking control afterwards in Dec. 1910 the OWR&N was formed by joining together underneath the Union Pacific Railroad subsidiary banner the Boise & Western Rly Columbia River & Oregon Central Columbia Southern Idaho Northern Ilwaco Lake Creek & Coeur d’Alene Malheur O&W RR OR&N and others into one railway requiring re-negotiation of the labor contracts with the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen finalized in this original report. 8vo pamphlet publishers printed wrappers 20 pp. Crease in the middle corners and extremities chipped a bit small hole in the middle of front wrapper not affecting text wrappers darkened and faded some mild foxing in the margins; otherwise very good. Somewhat typical report to shareholders but this was published a year after the railroad was founded. The company actually shows a surplus of funds and there is a very positive tone concerning future prospects and railroad construction. Interestingly the company points to problems facing other companies who had to borrow money at very high fixed interest rates to to develop their business. Sabin 60358.

Manuscript Ledger Book Containing Various Contracts and Deals between Different Railroad Companies in Massachusetts and New York.
<p>Large thick folio 15x10 1/2 bound in soft tan calf maroon morocco corners and spine label marbled endpapers 26 425 111 blank pp. Hinges reinforced with cloth front joint split leather chipped at spine ends and corners are a bit worn light rubbing and finger soiling to contents; else very good. Fascinating piece of railroad memorabilia that documents railroad company mergers deeds for track expansion and other contractual correspondence dated from 1839-1915 chiefly between Massachusetts and New York. Many of the transactions mention concern the Boston and Albany Railroad connecting Boston to Albany. The ledger appears to record events from the original documents. Sometimes it cites the individual who copied the document. While the the dates of documents it refers to go back to the before the mid 19th century these entries were probably done in the late 19th century or early 20th century. The ledger contains over 400 pages of hand-written contract documents most one to three pages long plus 26 pages indexing 166 contracts at the front. Nearly all with Public Notarization as well as signatures of the people involved. These are copies of the originals inked in various highly legible hands. Many of the documents are of the Boston and Albany Railroad which would become part of the New York Central Railroad system. </p>

Poster from the Southern Pacific Company offering a $5000 reward for information about the wrecking of the Streamliner "City of San Francisco" near Harney Nevada.
<p>Printed poster on thin card stock. 30.5x41.5 cm 12x16". Also includes a 6" x 10" flyer. Poster with vertical crease along which is an archival tape repair/reinforcement; flyer trimmed slightly bowed normal aging laid down on cloth backing. On August 12 1939 the City of San Francisco train derailed outside of Harney Nevada United States killing 24 and injuring 121 passengers and crew. While other train wrecks were deadlier this one was especially horriffic because was caused by sabotage of the tracks. Despite a manhunt reward offers including $5000 from the Southern Pacific and years of investigation by the Southern Pacific Railroad the case remains unsolved to this day. Accompanied by a handbill version of the poster.</p>

Scarce pamphlet offering a view of the building of the transcontinental railroad and some of the challenges it faced including those related to the crossing the Sierra Nevada. The map shows most of the U.S. excluding the southern fringe with the Central Pacific and Union Pacific Railroads connecting just north of Salt Lake City. The map also shows the proposed Southern Pacific Railroad from St. Louis to Southern California. The pamphlet talks about the need for the railroad because of the gold discoveries and the unlimited agricultural potential of the region.
