‎US. NAVY GREAT WHITE FLEET McKEEVER "Mellie" JG.? U. S. J. G.‎

‎Pair of Patriotic Memorial Textiles Commemorating the Voyage of the Great White Fleet 1907-1908‎

‎N.p. Japan ca 1907. Pair of large trapunto banners both removed from original frames. First 82cm x 60cm ca 32" x 24"; embroidered in silk with trapunto elements on a black silk ground; photographic portrait on cabinet card inserted in embroidered pocket at center inscribed "Mellie McKeever" on verso. Silk ground fragile with a few thin tears but no significant losses; light soil; embroidered portions generally well-preserved and colors bright. Very Good. Second banner 65cm x 50cm ca 25" x 20"; photo-transfer on silk with embroidered ornaments. Slight fading to embroidered portions but generally well-preserved and sound; Very Good. Both banners with firm provenance purchased from the descendants of Mellie McKeever of Richwood West Virginia. Two exceptional and well-preserved examples of the ornamental trapunto banners that were popular souvenirs among U.S. sailors and marines during the late 19th and early 20th century. Yokohama was the principal point of production for these naval souvenirs but we have also seen examples from the Philippines and mainland China; Japanese examples such as these are generally distinguished by a higher quality of embroidery and more sophisticated composition. The banners became popular among British and American sailors beginning as early as the Boxer Rebellion and the Spanish-American War but seem to have reached their peak of popularity with the arrival in the Far East of Teddy Roosevelt's Great White Fleet in 1908. Some 14000 sailors and marines made land at various Japanese ports-of-call in that year and given the regularity with which these textiles still appear one imagines that every sailor must have brought at least one of these souvenirs home with him.

The first example though of an unusually impressive size is of a type frequently seen displaying typical naval iconography right down to the hand-painted battleship portrait of a two-stack battleship of the Kearsarge class its hull painted white reflecting its peace-time mission at bottom center. The embroidered frame to hold a cabinet portrait of the sailor or perhaps a loved one is a typical feature found on more elaborate examples. The American Eagle in full battle stance is a nearly universal element of these banners.

The second banner is of a style we have not previously seen and for which we can find no analogues in the extensive literature of naval souvenirs. It is clearly a family portrait probably a composite made from cartes-des-visites carried by McKeever; the portraits are printed by silkscreen using a photo-transfer process with applied trapunto decorations. The likenesses are clearly enlarged -- it is highly unlikely that a common sailor would have had room aboard a battleship to carry full-size portraits -- and it strikes us that this must have seemed an almost magical process at the time of creation especially to a young man from a tiny lumber-and-coal town in central West Virginia.

Aside from their obvious virtues as objects of art and handicraft we regard these banners as compelling pieces of material culture from a period of tremendous social transformation in the United States. According to the Naval Historical Center U.S. naval rolls expanded by nearly 400% between the beginning of the Spanish-American War and the launching of the Great White Fleet. To meet this demand for the first time in its history the Navy began recruiting from the American heartland rather than solely from the Eastern Seaboard states. The generation of inland farmers and mechanics to follow was thus the first in American history to experience first-hand cultures as diverse and divergent from their own as those of Europe Asia and the Pacific Islands; they represented not only the beginning of the American imperialist enterprise but also the first stirrings of America's global consciousness. That so many of these banners have survived in good condition is evidence of the degree to which they were treasured by their owners for whom they represented an experience that must have been transformative and definitive. unknown books‎

‎Navy Photos‎

‎Archive of 53 Original Photographs c. 1921-1923 from Servicemen at Scapa Floe and the Honda Point Disaster--Biggest Peacetime Disaster in Navy History‎

‎53 original silver gelatin print photographs. c. 1921-1923. Mostly 3"x5" with a few 2"x"3 inches. Loose. Original vernacular photographs most likely taken by one or more servicemen in the U.S. Navy. While many of the photographs show battleships on exercises and fellow sailors on deck including some African American servicemen at least 9 bear firsthand witness to the infamous Honda Point disaster of the coast of Santa Barbara in 1923. More photographs from the group may be the ships involved before disaster struck. At least 4 additional photographs show the famous scuttling of German destroyers at Scapa Floe which occurred after peace was declared in 1921.

The Honda Point disaster was the largest peacetime loss of U.S. Navy ships. On the evening of September 8 1923 seven Clemson class destroyers while traveling at 20 knots 37 km/h ran aground at Honda Point a few miles from the northern side of the Santa Barbara Channel off Point Arguello on the coast in Santa Barbara County California. Two other ships grounded but were able to maneuver free off the rocks. Twenty-three sailors died in the disaster. Much study has been directed at determining the causes of such a terrible accident. Most likely the cause was a combination of heavy seas possibly caused by an earthquake in Japan darkness fog and the mistrust of the leadership on board the leading destroyer Delphy for the new radio navigation system preferring instead to use outdated estimation-based navigational methods. Although the Delphy immediately sounded her alarm after running aground the remainder of the squadrom was tragically traveling too close and one ship after another became entangled in the rocks. The photographs show from many views the various ships involved in the accident either listing heavily on rocks or sinking. Some of them can be identified as the U.S.S. S.P. Lee the Pervical the Nicholas the Woodbury the Chauncy and the leading ship Delphy. Most of the photos are taken very close by clearly from on board another ship perilously close to the disaster and most likely one of the fatal squadron. The final two appear to have been taken shortly after the sailor was rescued and show the wrecked vessels from the beach and from a rocky cliff overlooking the channel.

Four photos in the group record the incident at Scapa Floe on June 21 1919 where a German fleet of battleships was ordered by the Allies to report following the November Armistice ending World War I. They remained anchored for over 7 months and when word of the Peace Treaty of Versailles came in Admiral Reuter was ordered to surrender the vessels. However before they could be forced to comply the crew scuttled the vessels. We see in these photos the German Destroyers sinking including the S.M.S. Bayern and the S.M.S. Hindenburg with only smokestacks and tripod showing above the waterline. Another photo is labeled in the negative "German sailors leaving their doomed vessels for the last time. The remaining photographs in the group show submarines docked near San Francisco the Battleships Texas California and Florida sailors including a few African American aboard the U.S.S. Goff sailors carrying out routine exercises such as loading the deck gun launching torpedos maneuvering at speed and at least 6 photos of destroyers making heavy smoke which could be the Honda Point ships preceding the disaster. All photos are in very good condition with no previous sign of gluing or taping. Some are numbered and others have notes in white negative verso. A few are faded to sepia but most are still very dark and detailed. An important and historically relevant collection. unknown books‎

‎World War II US War and Navy Departments‎

‎Archive of 18 WWII War Department Pocket Guides to different countries‎

‎World War II Original war time U.S. War and Navy Departments first editionsPocket Guide books for 18 countries. These guidebooks were prepared by the U.S. War and Navy Departments to educate American soldiers stationed overseas during the conflict. It includes points on culture language including slang local history and the military justification for American presence in the area; in this sense these pocket books are a unique distillation of American wartime policy composed by the highest decision-makers in government for the soldiers actually setting foot on foreign soil. These guides provide a concise yet rich example of wartime indoctrination and the resulting cultural associations and relationships formed within the average American by the war.

All 18 guide books are war dated and they include: Alaska 1943; Australia 1944; Egypt 1943; France 1944; Paris and Cities of Northern France 1944; Cities of Southern France 1944; Great Britain 1944; India 1944; Iran 1943; Iraq 1943; Italian Cities 1944; New Caledonia 1944; New Guinea and the Solomons 1944; New Zealand 1943; Northern Ireland 1942; Panama 1943; Syria 1942; West Africa 1943. Washington DC: War and Navy Departments 1942-1944. Stapled bindings. 5.25" x 4.25" inches. All first editions. Written often in a casual approachable way From the Pocket Guide to Iraq: "Herr Hitler knows he's licked if the peoples united against him stand their ground" these guides repeatedly drill in the strategic necessity for Americans to create diplomatic relations wherever they are stationed. For example from the Pocket Guide to New Zealand: "Always remember that it is to our enemies' advantage to sow seeds of discord between us and our allies and it is to our advantage to understand them and to make them our friends." They also illustrate explicit policy motivations as with the Pocket Guide to Iran: "As an American soldier assigned to duty in Iran once called Persia you are undertaking the most important job of your life. There is no other war theater where military success by the United States and her fighting allies will contribute more to final victory over the axis. You've heard a lot of talk in this war about life lines - the sea lanes and land routes by which military supplies flow into the combat zones to be turned against the enemy. Iran is much more that a life line. It is a major source of the power that keeps the United Nations' military machine turning over -- oil. Because of its prime strategic value Iran in the only country in the world where the armies of three of the United Nations -- Great Britain Russia and the United States -- are operating in daily touch with each other . You as an American have a responsibility that goes beyond the ordinary military duties required of you. Your country has a reputation throughout the world for decency and unselfishness in its dealings with other nations. That reputation is a major asset for us in this global war. By your actions you can uphold it or destroy it." Includes period maps of the respective regions as well as cartoon illustrations to accompany the instructional text. Scattered soiling and wear. Altogether very good. unknown books‎
