The interdisciplinary scientific team were mainly researching the paleontology archaeology climatology and geophysics of the island. This book now brings together the results of the three expeditions identifies new areas of research and hopefully will continue to inspire aspiring scientists to revisit this amazing island to explore and demystify this timeless enigma of human history. . Guide to Beach Litter
Littoral Art Project 2016. A large illustrated folded card pamphlet. Closed it measures 25cm x 16.5cm but when fully opened 25cm x 99 cm. A detailed guide to plastic metal ceramic wood glass rubber etc. Postage will be reduced. Julia Barton's current work reflects her grave concern regarding the dangers of plastic within the environment. The installation Neo Terra presented as part of the Littoral Art Project investigates the critical issue of plastic marine and beach litter. Plastic in all its forms is weaving itself into the fabric of the earths ecosystems and earth itself silently burying within because little is being done to prevent or manage it. The stark prediction is it will provide a future legacy and record of our human interaction with the earth - an environmental catastrophe in waiting. This exhibition is the culmination of 3 years research and development of the Littoral Art Project which is gradually working its way along Scotlands coastline beginning in Ross-shire. Sapp Jan
What is Natural - Coral reef Crisis
New York & Oxford: Oxford University Press 1999. A few illustrations pp xviii 275 an extremely clean and bright hardback copy in a dustwrapper showing very faint signs of use. During the late 1960s and 1970s massive herds of poisonous crown-of-thorns starfish suddenly began to infest coral reef communities around the world leaving in their wake devastation comparable to a burnt-out rainforest. In What is Natural Jan Sapp both examines this ecological catastrophe and captures the intense debate among scientists about what caused the crisis and how it should be handled. The crown-of-thorns story takes readers on tropical expeditions around the world and into both marine laboratories and government committees where scientists rigorously search for answers to the many profound questions surrounding this event. Were these fierce starfish outbreaks the kind of manmade disaster heralded by such environmentalists as Rachel Carson in Silent Spring Indeed discussions of the cause of the starfish plagues have involved virtually every environmental issue of our timeover-fishing pesticide use atomic testing rain forest depletion and over-populationbut many marine biologists maintain that the epidemic is a natural feature of coral-reef life an ecological ""balance of nature"" that should not to be tampered with until we know the scientific truth of the crisis. But should we search for the scientific truth before taking action And what if an environmental emergency cannot wait for a rigorous scientific search for "the truth " The starfish plagues are arguably one of most mysterious ecological phenomena of this century. Through the window of this singlular event What is Natural lucidly illustrates the complexity of environmental issues while probing the most fundamental questions about the relationship between man and nature. The Trophic Cascade in Lakes
Cambridge University Press 1996. A few illustrations pp xiv 385 paperback the very slightest signs of use to the covers but virtually an as new copy of the original printing. Fluctuations in fish populations in lakes can cascade through food webs to alter nutrient cycling algal biomass and primary production. Trophic cascades may interact with nutrients and physical factors to explain most of the variance in lake ecosystem process rates. In this 1993 book a multidisciplinary research team tests this idea by manipulating whole lakes experimentally and coordinating this with palaeolimnological studies simulation modelling and small-scale enclosure experiments. Consequences of predator-prey interactions behavioural responses of fishes diel vertical migration of zooplankton plankton community change primary production nutrient cycling and microbial processes are described. Palaeolimnological techniques enable the reconstruction of trophic interactions from past decades. Prospects for analysing the interaction of food web structure and nutrient input in lakes are explored. Paperback. Very Good. Cambridge University Press Paperback
