‎TERRELL E.‎

‎Admiralty Brief. The Story of Inventions that contributed to Victory in the Battle of the Atlantic. IN THE DUSTWRAPPER‎

‎8vo., First Edition, with a portrait frontispiece, 33 plates on 28, front endpaper chart in red, green and black, and double-page folding plan at end; cloth, gilt back, a very good, clean copy in the dustwrapper. The remarkable story of how an eminent lawyer became one of the war's most effective inventors. Commissioned into the RNVR, Terrell was the originator of 'plastic armour', the 'scorpion', and the 'rocket bomb', all of which played a role in the fight against the U-boats. Scarce in this condition. Enser, p.403; Law 1253.‎

‎Last Call for HMS Edinburgh. A Story of the Russian Convoys. NEAR FINE COPY IN UNCLIPPED DUSTWRAPPER‎

‎8vo., First Edition, with 18 plates on 8 and a full-page map; cloth, gilt back, a fine copy in unclipped dustwrapper. With personal bookplate on front free endpaper. One of the best and most vivid accounts of the Arctic convoys, this documents the loss of HMS Edinburgh after a gallant action with convoy PQ14. It is valuable also for its coverage of the privations of the survivors, an aspect of Arctic warfare not often mentioned. The author survived the sinking of the brand-new cruiser HMS Trinidad, lost in the same waters only a few days later (see his story of that action in 'The Ship that torpedoed Herself ', 1975). Law, 0508‎

‎WRAGG David‎

‎Sacrifice for Stalin. The Cost and Value of the Arctic Convoys re-assessed. FINE COPY IN UNCLIPPED DUSTWRAPPER‎

‎8vo., First Edition, with plates and maps; black cloth, gilt back, a fine copy in unclipped dustwrapper. Appendices list the convoys and the merchant contingent. Few punches are pulled in this notable addition to the recent literature of Arctic convoys.‎

‎MONSARRAT Nicholas‎

‎The Cruel Sea. [Fourth Impression]. IN FULL MOROCCO‎

‎8vo., Fourth Impression, with a double-page map; handsomely bound in navy blue full morocco, back with raised bands, second compartment lettered in gilt, all other compartments tooled in gilt, gilt top, blue ribbon marker, a most attractive copy ideal as a gift or for presentation. Published four months after the first edition and the last impression issued in the year of first publication. The finest novel of the Royal Navy in WWII and a maritime classic. The story, based upon the author's own experiences, formed the basis of Charles Frend's notable feature film starring Jack Hawkins in one of his most memorable roles. So accurate is its depiction of the Battle of the Atlantic that it is one of the very few works of fiction admitted by Law to his standard bibliography The Royal Navy in World War Two. Law, 1865‎

‎O'BRIAN Patrick‎

‎The Final Unfinished Voyage of Jack Aubrey. Including Facsimile of the Manuscript. Foreword by William Waldegrave. NEAR FINE COPY IN UNCLIPPED DUSTWRAPPER‎

‎4to., First Edition, with numerous full-page facsimiles in the text and pictorial endpapers; blue cloth, gilt back, a near fine copy in unclipped dustwrapper. The chapters of the last (untitled) Aubrey novel left at O'Brian's death are presented both in printed version and as a facsimile of the manuscript. The latter extends several pages beyond the end of the typescript and includes marginal notes by the author. The striking endpapers display a wonderful gallery of the front panels of the dustwrappers of the much-loved Aubrey/Maturin series, together with a portrait of the author.‎

‎HURD Archibald‎

‎Britannia has Wings! The Fleet in Action - on, over and under the Sea.‎

‎Sm. 8vo., First Edition, with a portrait frontispiece and plates; blue cloth, upper board and backstrip lettered in black, a very good, bright, clean copy. Enser, p.381; Law 0639.‎

‎TARRANT V.E.‎

‎Battlecruiser Invincible. The History of the First Battlecruiser, 1909-16. FINE COPY IN UNCLIPPED DUSTWRAPPER‎

‎8vo., First Edition, with 33 plates on 16 and 14 maps in the text; blue cloth, gilt back, a fine copy in unclipped dustwrapper. Completed as the second most powerful warship in existence, the first of Britain's battlecruisers performed well in her allotted role as scourge of German commerce raiders in WWI. Only when called upon to fulfil a fleet role for which she was never designed did she come to spectacular grief at Jutland. A gripping, if inevitable, story, well told with much new material and good clutch of uncommon photographs.‎

‎HMS ENTERPRISE‎

‎HMS Enterprise. The Story Of The First Commission, April 1926 to December 1928.‎

‎8vo., First and Sole Edition, with numerous plates and a folding map (lightly spotted); red cloth, upper board and backstrip blocked and lettered in gilt, a very good, bright, clean copy. The editor was almost certainly the Rev. Harold E. Stevens, ship's chaplain from 1 January 1927 to the end of the commission. The first of the Royal Navy's two 'E'-class Cruisers (the other being HMS Emerald), Enterprise was launched on Clydebank in 1919 and completed at Devonport in 1926. During the last phase of her first commission she was commanded by Pridham-Whipple, who (commanding the Mediterranean cruiser squadrons for Cunningham) became one of Britain's finest fighting admirals of WWII. The Enterprise's own WWII service comprised Atlantic escort 1939-40; Home Fleet 1940 (including the Norwegian campaign during which she supported the army at Narvik); South Atlantic 1940-41 (including Force H and Mers-el-Kebir); East Indies 1941-42; Eastern Fleet 1942-43; Home Fleet 1943-44 (including Normandy/Utah); Reserve and Trooping 1945. After long and faithful service she was decommissioned in 1946 and scrapped at Newport in the same year. The suggestion that a book of the first commission should be produced came from the ship's company and a copy was printed for everyone who had served in her for a year or more. Since her complement averaged 570 it is clear that few copies can have survived, let alone in this condition; we have been unable so far to trace another. EXTREMELY SCARCE‎

‎LUND Paul‎

‎Nightmare Convoy. The Story of the Lost Wrens [Convoy OG71]. [Drawings by Tom Shuttleworth]. NEAR FINE COPY IN UNCLIPPED DUSTWRAPPER‎

‎8vo., First Edition, with 29 plates on 12 and numerous illustrations and maps in the text; cloth, gilt back, a near fine copy in unclipped dustwrapper. Moving account of convoy OG71 which sailed from Liverpool for Gibraltar in August 1941. The convoy was badly hit by U-boats resulting in the loss of several escorts and merchant vessels. Most dreadful of all was the death of twenty-two Wrens (the first such loss of the war) in the Commodore's steamer Aguila. Dustwrapper artwork and text illustrations by Tom Shuttleworth who served during the convoy abroad HMS Wallflower. It is notable that Nicholas Monsarrat, present aboard the Flower-class corvette HMS Campanula, termed this action 'my particular nightmare' and later based Lt.-Cmdr George Ericson of 'The Cruel Sea' on Captain Charles Cuthbertson, captain of HMS Zinnia. Another vividly-written account by a team with a well-deserved reputation for historical accuracy and carefully collected vernacular material.‎

‎8vo., First Edition, with 33 plates on 24, 4 diagrams in the text and 6 large folding maps (5 coloured in outline), title faintly spotted; original cloth, gilt back, boards lightly age-marked else a remarkably bright, clean copy. Effectively the official history of the German submarine campaign in the Great War.By early 1915 the U-boats' hesitant beginnings had become a commitment to a total blockade of the UK. This indispensable work includes a complete history of the campaign, describing in detail the nature and extent of the threat. For some time the Admiralty failed to appreciate fully the magnitude of the menace and it was not until 1917 that the introduction of a convoy system began to redress the balance. This account is one of very few to cover both overall strategy and individual boat tactics, and the photographs are both valuable and not easily available elsewhere. Appendices include a review the success of the convoy system, a history of German submarine design between 1904 and 1914, a record of German submarine construction and losses, German 'aces', merchant ship losses, and (almost uniquely) details of Austro-Hungarian and Turkish submarines. There are several modern re-issues, but none to anything like these production standards.
