‎THE BADER WING.‎

‎N.P.: Wrens Park n.p. 1999 reprint. 1999. 156 pp 8vo 8 5/8" H. B&w photographs. "Douglas Bader the indomitable legless air ace became a legend in his own lifetime and is today remembered as one of the greatest combatants to emerge during World War II. But less is known about the Bader Wing and its crucial contribution to the Battle of Britain. For the first time this book reveals the fascinating story of the charismatic Wing Commander and the five squadrons which he led: the Bader Wing consisting of some sixty pilots in all. The book highlights the dramatic aerial action of the Canadian aces in Baders's own 242 Squadron - Stan Turner Willis McKnight and G E Ball. It describes in absorbing detail their many successes and also the inevitable moments of disaster and death. Moreover the story is set against the broader canvas and controversy of the Big Wing. The tactics and strategy favouring the Wing are forcibly argued by the author who comes down heavily on the side of Douglas Bader the man whose outspoken views and forceful personality made the Wing possible. In 'The Bader Wing' some of the greatest names of World War II testify to Bader's leadership qualities including Johnnie Johnson Laddie Lucas Sholto Douglas Hugh Dundas and Alan Deere. Their opinions lend great weight to a book which blends the best of aviation action with a cool reappraisal of the Battle of Britain." Book is slightly cracked at rear darkening of colour at top of rear hinge. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling. Reprint. Hard Cover. Very Good/Near Fine. Wrens Park, n.p., 1999, reprint. "There were thirty-two VCs of the air during the Second World War yet how many of their names are known today We have all heard of the exploits of Guy Gibson a nd Leonard Cheshire but every one of the VCs of the air is associated with deeds equally daring and courageous. In these pages you will read of the forgotten VCs like Kenneth Campbell who torpedoed the 'Gneisnau' in the harbour of Brest f r o m a h e ight of 50 feet racing between the flak ships at mast height. William Reid whose citations reads: 'Wounded in two attacks without oxygen suffering severely from cold his navigator dead his wireless operator fatally injured hi s ai rc ra f t c ri pp led and defenceless he showed superb courage and leadership in penetrating a further 200 miles into enemy territory to attack one of the most strongly defended targets in Germany'; Flight Sergeant Middleton whose 'devotion to d uty in th e fa ce of ov erwhelming odds is unsurpassed in the annals of the Royal Air Force' to quote from the official citation. ‎BIG FRIEND LITTLE FRIEND: MEMOIRS OF A WORLD WAR II FIGHTER PILOT.‎

‎Doubleday Garden City New York 1969. 176 pp 8vo 8 7/16" H hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs portraits. "Richard Turner was a student in college when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. As a youngster he had devoured the magazines and books that told of the exploits an d adventures of the flying aces of World War I. When he came of age he took flying lessons so that when war came he was welcomed into the Army Air Corps. The metamorphosis of this young college student into a crack fighter pilot is the s u b j e c t o f this fast-moving memoir. The reader flies with Richard Turner into the largest sustained aerial conflict ever witnessed in history; past barrage balloons unmanned missiles and enemy fighters on hair-raising missions ranging from t he e sc or t o f he avy bombers Big Friends to accompanying the Supreme Allied Commander on his historic personal reconnaissance of the front lines the first time that a ground general had personally reconnoitered battle terrain in the prese nce of th e e nem y. Lt . C ol. Turner's memoirs also relate the rise to prominence of the Pioneer Mustang Group Little Friends as it aided the Eighth Air Force's heavy bombardment missions. And finally his very personal book shows how a youn g ge nera tion end eavo red to gras p and emulate the traditions of determination and courage of the preceding generation fulfilling its duty in the proud privilege of serving." ‎F-111A FIRST FLIGHT. Photodocumentary.; FZM-12-2226. 21 Dec 1964‎

‎Fort Worth: General Dynamics 1964. 1st Printing. Black flexible plastic spiral-bound binder gold lettering to front cover. Modest wear Very Good Plus. 3 preliminary pages of typescript text including a page written time-line of the aircraft's development printed recto only. After 16 photographs one typescript page inserted "News Conference Personnel" followed by 3 photographs of the news conference. Laid-in a xerox extract of a column by Fred H. De Jong supporting the aircraft's development & use original publication source not identified. 19 glossy b/w still photographs 8-1/2" x 11"

The F-111 Aardvark was an "American supersonic medium-range interdictor and tactical attack aircraft that also filled the roles of strategic nuclear bomber aerial reconnaissance and electronic-warfare aircraft in its various versions. The word 'aardvark' is Afrikaan for 'earthpig' and reflects the look of the long nose of the aircraft that might remind one of the nose of the aardvark. Developed in the 1960s by General Dynamics it entered service in 1967 with the United States Air Force. The F-111 pioneered several technologies for production aircraft including variable-sweep wings afterburning turbofan engines and automated terrain-following radar for low-level high-speed flight. Its design influenced later variable-sweep wing aircraft and some of its advanced features have since become commonplace." Wiki While the US transitioned to other aircraft in the late '90s the F-111 continued in service with the RAAF until December 2010. As Mr. Cosby's introductory note states "These photographs portray the sequence of events of 21 December 1964." No doubt only a limited number of these binders were made mostly likely for visiting dignitaries which makes this a rare promotional photodocumentary of the F-111A's first flight. At the time of cataloguing we find no copies elsewhere in the market nor listed on OCLC. General Dynamics unknown‎
