ill., br. Il Tibet, chiusosi ermeticamente al mondo nel secolo XIX, fu aperto a forza dagli inglesi nel 1904, per tornare subito a richiudersi ancora più ermeticamente di prima. Solo negli anni Trenta cominciarono a presentarsi rare occasioni d'accesso per alcuni privilegiati. Giuseppe Tucci seppe approfittarne più volte. Nelle sue spedizioni del 1937 e del 1948 ebbe come compagno Fosco Maraini, allora giovanissimo, che dalle sue note di viaggio trasse "Segreto Tibet" un libro che ebbe enorme successo e fu tradotto in dodici lingue. Nel Tibet di allora si viveva ancora in un medioevo intatto, un medioevo però altamente e raffinatamente civile privo soltanto di quei mezzi, datici dalla scienza e dalla tecnologia, quali strade, luce elettrica e plastica, fibre sintetiche e gas metano, televisione, giornali e radio. Il popolo tibetano trovava nella propria antica civiltà religiosa, artistica, letteraria, teatrale e musicale i mezzi per trascorrere un'esistenza ricca di soddisfazioni. Dal 1951 a oggi mutamenti drammatici, spesso accompagnati da violenze umilianti e da distruzioni insensate sono stati imposti al Tibet. L'intera struttura della società è stata capovolta e stravolta.

Il lungo articolo occupa 10 pagine (da p. 187 a p. 196) con 10 grandi memorabili FOTOGRAFIE scattate dall'Autore del fasc. in-8° (cm. 24,2x16,8), che è cpmpleto delle sue 112 pagine (da p. 113 a p. 224) illustrate che contiene altri articoli su Australia, Maiorca, monumenti Maya del Yucatan, Tel Aviv, insegne di Copenhagen, ecc. MARAINI, etnologo, orientalista, alpinista, fotografo talentuoso, scrittore e poeta, un Ulissa dal multiforme ingegno libero e pluriculturale, era già stato nel Tibet con Giuseppe Tucci, come fotografo nel 1937 e poi nel 1948. Questo articolo prelude a "Segreto Tibet", uscito nello stesso anno.
