Dikotter, Frank
Mao's Great Famine: The History of China's Most Devastating Catastrophe, 1958-62
br. ed. An unprecedented, groundbreaking history of China`s Great Famine that recasts the era of Mao Zedong and the history of the People`s Republic of China. Between 1958 and 1962, China descended into hell. Mao Zedong threw his country into a frenzy with the Great Leap Forward, an attempt to catch up and overtake Britain in less than 15 years. The experiment ended in the greatest catastrophe the country had ever known, destroying tens of millions of lives. So opens Frank Dikötter`s astonishing, riveting, magnificently detailed chronicle of an era in Chinese history much speculated about but never before fully documented because access to Communist Party archives has long been restricted to all but the most trusted historians. A new archive law has opened up thousands of central and provincial documents that fundamentally change the way one can study the Maoist era. Dikötter makes clear, as nobody has before, that far from being the program that would lift the country among the world`s superpowers and prove the power of communism, as Mao imagined, the Great Leap Forward transformed the country in the other direction. It became the site not only of one of the most deadly mass killings of human history, as at least 45 million people were worked, starved or? beaten to death, but also the greatest demolition of real estate in human history, as up to a third of all housing was turned into rubble. The experiment was a catastrophe for the natural world as well, as the land was savaged in the maniacal pursuit of steel and other industrial accomplishments. In a powerful meshing of exhaustive research and narrative drive, Dikötter for the first time links up what happened in the corridors of power?the vicious backstabbing and bullying tactics that took place among party leaders?with the everyday experiences of ordinary people, giving voice to the dead and disenfranchised. His magisterial account recasts the history of the People`s Republic of China. Printed Pages: 448

Dikötter, Frank
Crime, Punishment, and the Prison in Modern China, 1895-1949. With 42 illustrations.
New York, Columbia University Press, 2002. xvi, 441 S. Orig.-Leinenband mit Schutzumschlag. "An examination of the enormous changes in Chinese society in the first half of the 20th century through the lens of the Chinese prison system. More than a simple history of prison rules or penal administration, the text offers a social and cultural analysis of the Chinese prison system that explores the profound effects and lasting repercussions of superimposing Western-derived models of repentance and rehabilitation on traditional categories of crime and punishment. Frank Dikotter explores penal reform as a radical modern tool to achieve a traditional Chinese vision of social cohesion and the rule of virtue. He also offers insights into daily life behind bars. A world of petty villains, abusive guards, ambitious wardens and idealist reformers is revealed, giving flesh and bone to the more general story of the prison in China. Based on research and different sources, this is a cultural history of crime and of the prison, opening a window into a little-known aspect of late-19th- and early-20th-century China" (Publisher's description).

DILLON NARA
Harvard East Asian Monographs 383. Radical Inequalities: China's Revolutionary Welfare State In Comparative Perspective
Harvard University Press Cambridge Massachusetts and London England: 2015. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. The Chinese Communist welfare state was established with the goal of eradicating income inequality. But paradoxically it actually widened the income gap undermining one of the most important objectives of Mao Zedong's revolution. Nara Dillon traces the origins of the Chinese welfare state from the 1940s through the 1960s when such inequalities emerged and were institutionalized to uncover the reasons why the state failed to achieve this goal. Using newly available archival sources Dillon focuses on the contradictory role played by labor in the development of the Chinese welfare state. At first the mobilization of labor helped found a welfare state but soon labor's privileges turned into obstacles to the expansion of welfare to cover more of the poor. Under the tight economic constraints of the time small temporary differences evolved into large entrenched inequalities. Placing these developments in the context of the globalization of the welfare state Dillon focuses on the mismatch between welfare policies originally designed for European economies and the very different conditions found in revolutionary China. Because most developing countries faced similar constraints the Chinese case provides insight into the development of narrow unequal welfare states across much of the developing world in the postwar period. Nara Dillon is a Lecturer in the Department of Government at Harvard University. Harvard University Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts and London England: 2015 hardcover

Ding, Naifei
Obscene Things: Sexual Politics in Jin Ping Mei (ISBN:0822329166)
8vo br. ed. 352 pages. In Obscene Things Naifei Ding intervenes in conventional readings of Jin Ping Mei, an early scandalous Chinese novel of sexuality and sexual culture. After first appearing around 1590, Jin Ping Mei was circulated among some of China's best known writers of the time and subsequently was published in three major recensions. A 1695 version by Zhang Zhupo became the most widely read and it is this text in particular on which Ding focuses. Challenging the preconceptions of earlier scholarship, she highlights the fundamental misogyny inherent in Jin Ping Mei and demonstrates how traditional biases&;particularly masculine biases&;continue to inform the concerns of modern criticism and sexual politics. The story of a seductive bondmaid-concubine, sexual opportunism, domestic intrigue, adultery and death, Jin Ping Mei has often been critiqued based on the coherence of the text itself. Concentrating instead on the processes of reading and on the social meaning of this novel, Ding looks at the various ways the tale has been received since its first dissemination, particularly by critiquing the interpretations offered by seventeenth-century Ming literati and by twentieth-century scholars. Confronting the gender politics of this "pornographic"; text, she troubles the boundaries between premodern and modern readings by engaging residual and emergent Chinese gender and hierarchic ideologies.

Dirlik Arif
Revolution and History: Origins of Marxist Historiography in China, 1919-1937
8vo, br. ed. 235pp. In Revolution and History, Arif Dirlik examines the application of the materialist conception of history to the analysis of Chinese history in a period when Marxist ideas first gained currency in Chinese intellectual circles. His argument raises questions about earlier interpretations of Marxist historiography by scholars who based their opinions primarily on post-1949 writings.
