Lu Xun and Others
MASTERPIECES OF MODERN CHINESE FICTION, 1919-1949
563p. Translated from Chinese. Softcover, near new. In the thirty years from the literary revolution of 1919 to the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, China experienced a great flowering in literary creativity. The present selection comprises twenty-four outstanding short stories by twenty-four of the most talented writers of this period. The stories reveal the sufferings of the Chinese people in the years before liberation and show also the revolutionary course taken by them in their search for a new life. They also demonstrate the high level of writing achieved in this period: each is a valuable contribution to the treasury of modern Chinese literature. In compiling this collection, the editors have taken into account both the position of the author in modern Chinese literary history and the representativeness of the story in the author's creative work. For the convenience of the readers, each story is followed by a brief biography of the author. B

Yuan Da Zongtong Sijie. The Four Admonitions of President Yuan. Recipient : Tingzhai (Xia Yiting). (Confidential white paper of a diplomatic nature, providing a first-hand account of the behind-the-scenes events surrounding the creation of the short-lived Empire of China, 1915-1916).
Beijing, The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Printing Office and Yuan Shikai’s Presidential Office Printing 1915, 200x125mm, paperback. Cover made from paper produced from blue sandalwood bark (Qingtan / Pteroceltis tatarinowii) and inner pages made from rice-straw paper (Xuan paper) folded in the Chuanzi (traditional thread-bound or butterfly pamphlet style) - is characteristic of elite government publications of the era. - Bearing the red seal of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the bottom right-hand corner of the first page. - The use of Seal Script (Zhuanshu) for the title asserts historical legitimacy and archaism, while the crisp Song/Ming Regular Script (Kaishu) was the gold standard for official, highly readable governmental documentation. Documents of this nature : printed directly by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Printing Office and Yuan Shikai’s Presidential Office Printing Office, were produced in incredibly limited runs. Because Yuan Shikai’s empire collapsed after just 83 days, and his regime was immediately discredited, vast quantities of imperial presidential papers were destroyed, abandoned, or lost in the subsequent warlord era.The presence of the official red seal of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs anchors its authenticity, elevating it from a mere historical curiosity to an archival-grade artifact. - Book in very good condition.

Lu Zhongli
Power of the Words: Chen Prophecy in Chinese Politics AD 265-618
8vo, br, ed. 394pp. This is a study of the sociopolitical role of the belief in chen prophecy in early medieval China. The chen prophecies discussed in this work are not confined to the traditional prophetic-apocryphal texts. Many contemporary prophecies emerged and circulated in association with current events; personal names, reign titles, poems, folk and children's rhymes, even rumor-rhymes were recognized as heavenly revelations. Although prophetic utterances were used as psychological weapons in politics, it would be wrong to regard chen prophecy as simply political propaganda. Chen prophecies were believed to be genuine prophetic messages at the time. Chen prophecy was an indispensable part of a symbolic ritual of legitimation of mandate-transfer. It was recognized as a coded revelation that derived its prophetic power from the primitive belief in the magic power of words. The emphasis on winning public acceptance may have been another source of its prophetic power. Social integration, legitimation of dynastic change, and the hopes for a better future in an age of tumult thus depended on the belief in the interaction between Heaven's mandate and man's destiny.
