‎Un travail de thèse reposant sur des sources chinoises admirablement mises en valeur. La Chine a occupé une place considérable dans la pensée des Lumières. Les Chinois, dont la civilisation était née avant l'antiquité païenne, avaient des lois, des institutions, une morale, une religion, des arts et des techniques. Mais n'étaient-ils pas athées ? Et s'ils l'étaient, ne devrait-on pas en conclure, puisqu'on les peignait comme sociables, polis, savants, équitables, que le monde pouvait exister sans la religion ? La Chine fournirait des arguments au nationalisme déiste ou athée contre toute la philosophie qui fondrait la valeur de l'homme sur son rapport avec le divin. Au premier rang de ces philosophes se situe Voltaire. Notre auteur, déçu par certains aspects de l'Europe, eut recours à l'Empire du Milieu pour pouvoir mieux illustrer sa pensée. La thèse comprend deux parties. La première traite de la présence de la chine dans l'oeuvre de voltaire avec pour thèmes : l'histoire et l'antiquité, la société, la politique, la religion, la philosophie, les sciences, les arts et les belles lettres chinois ; et nous avons tente de justifier la distance entre la chine réelle et l'image voltairienne de la chine. La deuxième partie : "recherches et interprétation" porte sur une étude chronologique des écrits de voltaire sur la chine, suivie d'une enquête sur les sources de l'auteur a propos de ses écrits sur l'empire du milieu, et en dernier lieu, sur l'intérêt philosophique et matériel de la chine pour voltaire. Cette étude historique, philosophique, bibliographique, biographique, chronologique et psychologique basée sur les oeuvres complètes et la correspondance de voltaire nous amène a mieux comprendre le mythe de la chine exploite au siècle des lumières par notre auteur.
