The New Realism: Writings From China After The Cultural Revolution
Hippocrene Books New York: 1983. Softcover. Brand new book. Until late in 1978 contemporary writings from China were almost universally without respect or standing in the literary world. Following the fall of the Gang of Four however the government sent signals implying a relaxation of the standards for writers and a redefinition of their obligations. An outpouring of creativity resulted portraying Chinese society vividly and realistically. This volume brings together some of the more prominent writing from this important period in Chinese literature a period some have called "the second Hunded Flowers. ISBN: 0882548107. Yen Mah Adeline
Falling Leaves
Michael Joseph 1997 Her Grand Aunt formed the Shanghai Women's Bank. Her farther started his own firm at the age of nineteen and was known as the miracle boy with the power of turning iron into gold. Yet in this affluent Chinese family the fifth child and youngest daughter Adeline suffered appalling emotional abuse. Adeline's mother died in childbirth and her father remarried a beautiful Eurasian who treated her step-children as second-class citizens. Adeline in particular was considered inferior and insignificant. On her first day at school no one collected her; she was not allowed to invite friends home; she was later sent to boarding school. Not surprisingly she dreamt of freedom and independence and eventually made a successful career. Michael Joseph hardcover
