1950 JAPAN DIARY & PHOTO ALBUM
The Diary Of An American Officer Stationed In Japan In 1950; It Includes Dozens Of Photographs Of Labor Protests And The Officer’s Comments About The Unrest And Communism
JAPAN. Diary. January 14 1950 to late 1954. Various places Philadelphia Japan Fort Meade. A lengthy diary of an American officer Lieutenant Louis T. Holtz who was stationed in Japan during the Korean War. It was written on dozens of sheets of loose-leaf notebook pages and it contains many black and white photographs with captions as well as newspaper and magazine cutouts and brochures from places he visited. The diary begins on January 14 1950 in Philadelphia and he discuses seeing shows and such but notes that “All in all this constituted a very enjoyable ten days of leave prior to going overseas. Sometimes I wish I could stay at home and live a normal routine life like everyone else. Other times I find myself eager to go…Almost two years ago who could forecast a war in Korea and the manner in which it would rip everyone’s life to shreds†He writes on January 2 1951 from Kurume Japan: “…perhaps 10 years from now it the diary will be of interest – if any of our civilization remains in 1961…I collapsed 28 June and spent 3 weeks in the hospital with excessive fatigue…I am the Officer-in-charge of the Kurume Office with an area of jurisdiction of approximately 1000 square miles…â€. In April 1951 he mentions “I am very busy in my position as OIC Officer In Charge. It’s a full 7-day-a-week job…The Korean mess has everyone guessing as to eh future of the Far East…being the senior official in an area of jurisdiction of nearly 10000 square miles with dozens of mayors and police chiefs constantly catching my every word as official.â€. The next couple dozen pages contain black and white photographs of protests in Japan and Holtz’s commentary about the images including “When people get hurt propaganda fills the air. The winner: the Kremlin – always!†“Demonstrations take planning and people. You can always be sure the plans were framed in red and the spectators sprinkled liberally with dye-hard communist stooges†“Demonstrations & rallies are usually fantastically well organized. And as often as not they can be unbelievably orderly†and “But orderly or violent you can always be sure there is a professional communist keeping the ‘sheep’ in line or arousing them to maximum fury.†In September 1951 Holtz writes from Sapporro “…life in the Armed Services has been a miserable one because of one bad experience after another…Kurume was one of the most pleasant and enjoyable assignments I ever held. The 45th was without doubt the most bitter and least enjoyable. I gave up so much for so little…â€. Holtz was in California’s Camp Stoneman in November 1951: “…with all the hundreds of officers here not particularly anxious to go overseas and with several actually fighting the assignment I was amazed to find that someone eager to return is sidetracked so abruptly…â€. He was back in Japan by December and then wrote a lengthy entry entitled “The Korean Story†starting with “Combat precautions make it mandatory that no diaries or personal papers be kept where they may fall into enemy hands†and he spends the next seven pages describing his experiences in the Korean War. Holtz wrote in part: “…Things had not gone well at all with Trubota’s unit prior to August 1951. After my arrival working results proved very satisfactory…Three other officers has also joined up in the interim between leaving Sapporo and going to Korea…When oriented in Tokyo they were told that the 45th Detachment would remain in Sapporo and they had already alerted their families to start to prepare to join them overseas…I had to fight Trubota in order to be able to fight the enemy. In one occasion I was reprimanded for going to a forward observation post and not being personally available to answer the telephone at my CP…†and the section finishes with a photograph of the USS Marine Lynx the ship that brought him home. The diary continues with his being stationed at Maryland’s Fort Meade. There are photographs of the mansion he occupied in Kyushu Japanese women at the beach his fellow soldiers after a bowling tournament etc. There are “Samples of United Nations propaganda leaflets dropped on North Korean positions early in the Korean conflict†that show Truman and MacArthur a December 7 1950 letter signed by the mayor of Kurume City Japan. The condition is fine to very fine. unknown

GARDENING: JAPAN
A Photographic Diary of the Visit of the Garden Club of America to Japan at the Invitation of Prince Iyesato Tokugawa May 13th to June 2nd 1935.
Tokyo: Nichi-Bei Kyokai nai Beikoku Teien Kurabu Shotai Iinkai 1935. First and only edition. English text. Oblong quarto 12 1/4 x 9 inches. 2 title with verso blank 2 itinerary of the garden Club of America in Japan 136 pp. of full page photogravure illustrations of the tour versos blank two leaves showing the Japanese hosts of the even each with an traced outline identifying each person one is panorama 10 name and address list for members of the Garden Club members and their Japanese hosts pp. All the plates have tissue guards with captions in English. Original Japanese string binding with silk covered boards and printed paper cover label in Kanji decorative endpaperss The covers have been professionally re-attached. A very good copy. A remarkably expensive publication for what would on the face of it appear to be a humdrum sort of occasion; a garden tour. The fact this book was published in such a deluxe format using photogravures overlays etc. is a testament on how important this was to the Japanese. n May 1935 imperial princes influential businessmen and ÂŽlite members of Kokusai Bunka Shink kai The Society for International Cultural Relations hosted ninety members from the Garden Club of America on a 21-day tour of gardens in Tokyo and Kyoto. The American guests also experienced Japanese cultureÑtea Noh ikebana dance art displays and the best of Japanese and western food. For the Japanese hosts this was more than an opportunity to showcase traditional practices and cultural treasures. The tour was Ã’garden diplomacyÓ an attempt to utilize the positive impression of Japanese gardens to impact influential Americans at a time of growing tension between Japan and the United States. the Prince Togugawa spoke diplomatically of the renewed importance in Japan of defining and accepting Ã’national characterÓ as the country dealt with the evolving domestic and international challenges:Our love of gardens is nothing but our love of nature. No Japanese dwelling however humble can exist without its garden because the garden is as essential as the sheltering roof or the protecting wall. Between the house and the garden there is no line of demarcation. The garden has been developed to bring nature into the dwellings of our people equally for the wealthy and the humble. It is indeed a great revelation to us that the quiet charm of our gardens has found such a responsive chord in the hearts of the people of America. Your coming will bring to us a new inspiration for appreciation of nature will awaken us to a new realization of our national character. It seems most fitting that we should receive such selected friends from beyond the Pacific in the quiet of our gardens for the enjoyment of true companionship. On our part we hope to receive from you invaluable lessons in social virtues for beautification of communities and for proper preservation of natural beauties." B. Pendleton. The Club semed to spen a fair amount of time in the garden of Baron Shidehara's garden. Baron Shidehara was a Japanese diplomat statesman and prime minister for a brief period after World War II 1945Ã46. He was so closely identified with the peaceful foreign policy followed by Japan in the 1920s that this policy is usually referred to as Shidehara diplomacy. The fact that this excursion was hostedd by the Royal Family speaks volumes. It is nonethess a beautiful volume with excellent photographic illustrations. Japan. FARSARI Adolfo
Two impressive large-format albums containing a total of 110 hand-coloured nineteenth-century albumen paper photographs of Japan by Adolfo Farsari
First Edition. Hardcover. The photographs each approximately 190 240 mm or the reverse are mounted on the rectos only of thick leaves in matching volumes bound in half morocco and dark green stippled cloth external dimensions 345 460 mm. The albums are lettered in gilt on the front covers respectively 'Voyage autour du Monde. Japon. Le Tokaiado Yokohama Tokio' 54 plates and 'Voyage autour du Monde. Japon. Nikko & Le Nord' 56 plates. Below each title is the gilt monogram 'HI' presumably the as-yet unidentified traveller who collected the photographs and commissioned these deluxe productions. The Italian adventurer Adolfo Farsari 1841-1898 'owned the last important Western photography studio in Japan. Born in Italy he immigrated sic to the United States in 1863 where he married served in the Union army and became an American citizen. Following the death of his second son he left home and spent the next five years traveling before moving to Japan in 1873. In Yokohama he established a business A. Farsari & Co. selling maps guidebooks and photographs supplied by various studios. Farsari taught himself photography and opened his own studio in 1885 when he acquired the stock and negatives of Stillfried & Anderson. In 1886 a fire destroyed all of his negatives and for five months afterward he toured Japan taking new photographs to replace them. He reopened his studio in 1887 with a portfolio of around 1000 images. Over the next three years in an increasingly competitive market he achieved commercial success by offering quality work at a higher price and using an innovative approach to hand coloring his photographs. In 1890 he left Japan and returned to Italy' Harvard College Library Collections Overview. The prints in these handsome albums all with a title and alpha-numeric code in a bottom corner of the negative identifying them as Farsari photographs unquestionably match this description. The albums are a little rubbed at the extremities with minor wear to the corner tips; the contents are in very fine condition. hardcover

The album contains three series of commercially produced small photographic views loosely inserted behind photo-corners 40 hand-coloured views of Japan; 56 black and white views of Tokyo; and 40 black and white views of the Kure-Hiro district as well as 11 larger personal photographs of Bangkok. The last three items in the album are more significant: they are professionally produced photographs of two destroyers of the RAN - HMAS 'Anzac' D59 and HMAS 'Warramunga' D123 - and a large group portrait of three officers and twelve sailors of the 'Warramunga'. Both these ships served in the Korean War. The album and its contents appear to have been purchased by one of the crew members of the 'Warramunga' after she became one of the first Australian warships assigned to the Far East Strategic Reserve in 1955. unknown
