Japan
Two vintage photographs of Japanese soldiers in the field in uniforms of the Russo-Japanese War period 1904-05
The gelatin silver images each approximately 90 140 mm are on the original blind-embossed card mounts each approximately 170 220 mm; the surfaces of both images are lightly scuffed; one has a few visible fingerprint marks in the negative; overall both items are in excellent condition. One photograph features columns of soldiers marching with packs and rifles with fixed bayonets over a suspension bridge and along a riverside path in a rural area watched over by a local family standing at the top of a nearby cutting. The second photograph depicts presumably the same troops in two ragged lines facing each other with fixed bayonets in a sparsely wooded field. unknown

YOKOHAMA JAPAN
Letters Of Life And Anti-Semitism From An American Abroad In Early 20th Century Japan
a TLS. 2pg. 8 ¼†x 10â€. July 15 1920. Yokohama Japan. A typed letter signed “Neil†laced with anti-Semitic sentiment. In part: “Went out calling last night with the bunch of fellows across the street. The host and his side partner are N.Y. Jews but sort of decent people. The wife is very nice but the husband is a regular East Sider. He is always talking about ‘not that I mind the expense of the house here but the servant is always telling about the money she needs for this and that and I can’t see where it goes to.’ You know just about what kind of a guy he is better than I do no doubt and you haven’t seen him. Anyway it was sort of a pleasant evening as he left the States in March and brought a lot of the new songs with him. He is a very good piano player and I had a fine time listening to him. One of the songs he played and ‘tried to sing’ just like John was ‘Pal of Mine’ you know how nice it was in comparison to the real singer and this Jew did the same stunt of turning to his wife too as John does to his wife when she sits up in the box. The husband was just a regular N.Y. smart alex Jew.†Typed on letterhead from Yokohama’s Grand Hotel which famously burned down as a result of the devastating 1923 Great Kanto earthquake the letter is in very fine condition with light toning throughout and a few handwritten corrections not affecting legibility. b TLS. 3pg. 8 ¼†x 10â€. July 19 1920. Yokohama Japan. A typed letter signed “Neil†regarding work and life as an American abroad in early 20th century Japan. In part: “There isn’t much doing as for excitement but just hang around and do nothing. I really think I am gaining weight on the job. I met a fellow here who deals in all sorts of dress goods from Boston and I am getting on the right side of him as he gets all his stuff from here and I may be able to get some things for you people wholesale when you need them. He is one of us you get me being from Boston and a very fine chap. Eleanor will have nothing on me then getting things wholesale. About the only thing we need now wholesale is to get a bank to give us more money on our checks when we cash in. I am thinking of buying a kimono for Connors in the office for his wife as they are married in the Fall. He is a nice fellow and I thought for his trouble in calling up and the like I would bring him back one. I am not sure about it as yet but I think I will.†Typed on letterhead from Yokohama’s Grand Hotel which famously burned down as a result of the devastating 1923 Great Kanto earthquake the letter is in very fine condition with light toning throughout and a few handwritten corrections not affecting legibility. unknown

DREA EDWARD J
Japan's Imperial Army: Its Rise And Fall 1853-1945
University Press of Kansas Lawrence: 2016. Softcover. Brand new book. Popular impressions of the imperial Japanese army still promote images of suicidal banzai charges and fanatical leaders blindly devoted to their emperor. Edward Drea looks well past those stereotypes to unfold the more complex story of how that army came to power and extended its influence at home and abroad to become one of the world's dominant fighting forces. This first comprehensive English-language history of the Japanese army traces its origins evolution and impact as an engine of the country's regional and global ambitions and as a catalyst for the militarization of the Japanese homeland from mid-nineteenth-century incursions through the end of World War II. Demonstrating his mastery of Japanese-language sources Drea explains how the Japanese style of warfare burnished by samurai legends shaped the army narrowed its options influenced its decisions and made it the institution that conquered most of Asia. He also tells how the army's intellectual foundations shifted as it reinvented itself to fulfill the changing imperatives of Japanese societyand how the army in turn decisively shaped the nation's political social cultural and strategic course. Drea recounts how Japan devoted an inordinate amount of its treasury toward modernizing professionalizing and training its armywhich grew larger more powerful and politically more influential with each passing decade. Along the way it produced an efficient military schooling system a well-organized active duty and reserve force a professional officer corps that thought in terms of regional threat and well-trained soldiers armed with appropriate weapons. Encompassing doctrine strategy weaponry and civil-military relations Drea's expert study also captures the dominant personalities who shaped the imperial army from Yamagata Aritomo an incisive geopolitical strategist to Anami Korechika who exhorted the troops to fight to the death during the final days of World War II. Summing up Drea also suggests that an army that places itself above its nation's interests is doomed to failure. Edward J. Drea recipient of the Society for Military History's Samuel Eliot Morison Award for lifetime achievement is the author of MacArthur's ULTRA: Codebreaking and the War against Japan and In the Service of the Emperor: Essays on the Japanese Imperial Army. "Far exceeds the expectations for 'reference works' in the sophistication of its historical argumentation. . . . For anyone considering the historiography of Japan's road to war in the 1930s Drea's work will become required reading."Historian "An impressive and important piece of scholarship that addresses the first modern U.S. enemy to institutionalize suicide tactics as a mechanism to exhaust the will of the American people and to obtain a less-severe peace. . . . Highly recommended for command and staff students undergraduate survey courses on modern Japan and anyone interested in the pathology of militarism and how it can derail national policymaking."Military Review University Press of Kansas, Lawrence: 2016 paperback

ALLISON ANNE
Nightwork: Sexuality Pleasure And Corporate Masculinity In A Tokyo Hostess Club
University of Chicago Press Chicago and London: 1994. Softcover. Brand new book. In Nightwork Anne Allison opens a window onto Japanese corporate culture and gender identities. Allison performed the ritualized tasks of a hostess in one of Tokyo's many "hostess clubs": pouring drinks lighting cigarettes and making flattering or titillating conversation with the businessmen who came there on company expense accounts. Her book critically examines how such establishments create bonds among white-collar men and forge a masculine identity that suits the needs of their corporations. Allison describes in detail a typical company outing to such a clubwhat the men do how they interact with the hostesses the role the hostess is expected to play and the extent to which all of this involves "play" rather than "work." Unlike previous books on Japanese nightlife Allison's ethnography of one specific hostess club here referred to as Bijo views the general phenomenon from the eyes of a woman hostess and feminist anthropologist. Observing that clubs like Bijo further a kind of masculinity dependent on the gestures and labors of women Allison seeks to uncover connections between such behavior and other social economic sexual and gendered relations. She argues that Japanese corporate nightlife enables and institutionalizes a particular form of ritualized male dominance: in paying for this entertainment Japanese corporations not only give their male workers a self-image as phallic man but also develop relationships to work that are unconditional and unbreakable. This is a book that will appeal to anyone interested in gender roles or in contemporary Japanese society. BAYLISS JEFFREY PAUL
On The Margins Of Empire: Buraku And Korean Identity In Prewar And Wartime Japan
Harvard University Press Cambridge Massachusetts and London England: 2013. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. Two of the largest minority groups in modern JapanKoreans who emigrated to the metropole as colonial subjects and a social minority with historical antecedents known as the Burakuminshare a history of discrimination and marginalization that spans the decades of the nation's modern transformation from the relatively liberal decade of the 1920s through the militarism and nationalism of the 1930s to the empire's demise in 1945. Through an analysis of the stereotypes of Koreans and Burakumin that were constructed in tandem with Japan's modernization and imperial expansion Jeffrey Paul Bayliss explores the historical processes that cast both groups as the antithesis of the emerging image of the proper Japanese citizen/subject. This study provides new insights into the majority prejudices social and political movements and state policies that influenced not only their perceived positions as "others" on the margins of the Japanese empire but also the minorities' views of themselves their place in the nation and the often strained relations between the two groups. Jeffrey Paul Bayliss is Associate Professor of History at Trinity College. Harvard University Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts and London England: 2013 hardcover

KUSHNER BARAK
Men To Devils Devils To Men: Japanese War Crimes And Chinese Justice
Harvard University Press Cambridge Massachusetts and London England: 2015. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. The Japanese Army committed numerous atrocities during its pitiless campaigns in China from 1931 to 1945. When the Chinese emerged victorious with the Allies at the end of World War II many seemed ready to exact retribution for these crimes. Rather than resort to violence however they chose to deal with their former enemy through legal and diplomatic means. Focusing on the trials of and policies toward Japanese war criminals in the postwar period Men to Devils Devils to Men analyzes the complex political maneuvering between China and Japan that shaped East Asian realpolitik during the Cold War. Barak Kushner examines how factions of Nationalists and Communists within China structured the war crimes trials in ways meant to strengthen their competing claims to political rule. On the international stage both China and Japan propagandized the tribunals promoting or blocking them for their own advantage. Both nations vied to prove their justness to the world: competing groups in China by emphasizing their magnanimous policy toward the Japanese; Japan by openly cooperating with postwar democratization initiatives. At home however Japan allowed the legitimacy of the war crimes trials to be questioned in intense debates that became a formidable force in postwar Japanese politics. In uncovering the different ways the pursuit of justice for Japanese war crimes influenced Sino-Japanese relations in the postwar years Men to Devils Devils to Men reveals a Cold War dynamic that still roils East Asian relations today. Barak Kushner is University Senior Lecturer in Modern Japanese History at the University of Cambridge. "Using newly available sources from both China and Japan Kushner examines the complex motives that shaped the Chinese trials."Foreign Affairs "A fascinating and reliable account of the ending of the long war between China and Japan in 1945 with particular emphasis on how the Chinese dealt with Japanese war criminalsand how the Japanese failed to come to terms with their own war crimes. As Kushner shows Chinese authorities were eager to show themselves as knowledgeable about international law rather than seeking revenge which often resulted in their hesitation to conduct lengthy trials of a large number of Japanese who on their part had little awareness of their war crimes even viewing themselves as having been 'victims' of circumstances. This book is must reading for anyone interested in understanding the still tortuous relationship between the two countries."Akira Iriye editor of Global Interdependence: The World after 1945 "Men to Devils Devils to Men breaks through national boundaries to show how war crimes and the question of war guilt reshaped East Asia after the Second World War. It is a major book on an important and timely topic and will spark serious debate about the Cold War law in Asia and the end of empire."Rana Mitter author of Forgotten Ally: China's World War II 1937-1945 Harvard University Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts and London England: 2015 hardcover

WILSON NOELL
Defensive Positions: The Politics Of Maritime Security In Tokugawa Japan
Harvard University Press Cambridge Massachusetts and London England: 2015. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. Defensive Positions focuses on the role of regional domains in early modern Japan's coastal defense shedding new light on this system's development. This examination in turn has significant long-term political implications for the involvement of those domains in Tokugawa state formation. Noell Wilson argues that domainal autonomy in executing maritime defense slowly escalated over the course of the Tokugawa period to the point where the daimyo ultimately challenged Tokugawa authorities as the primary military interface with the outside world. By first exploring localized maritime defense at Nagasaki and then comparing its organization with those of the Yokohama and Hakodate harbors during the treaty port era Wilson identifies new core systemic sources for the collapse of the shogunate's control of the monopoly on violence. Her insightful analysis reveals how the previously unexamined system of domain-managed coastal defense comprised a critical third elementin addition to trade and diplomacyof Tokugawa external relations. Domainal control of coastal defense exacerbated the shogunate's inability to respond to important military and political challenges as Japan transitioned from an early modern system of parcelized local maritime defense to one of centralized national security as embraced by world powers in the nineteenth century. Noell Wilson is Croft Associate Professor of History and International Studies at the University of Mississippi. Harvard University Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts and London England: 2015 hardcover

SATO DOSHIN
Modern Japanese Art And The Meiji State The Politics Of Beauty
Getty Publications Los Angeles: 2011. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. This broad-ranging and profoundly influential analysis describes how Western art institutions and vocabulary were transplanted to Japan in the late nineteenth century. In the 1870s and 1880s artists government administrators and others in Japan encountered the Western "system of the arts" for the first time as objects and information from Japan reached European and American audiences following the collapse of the shogun's regime. Under pressure to exhibit and sell its artistic products abroad Japan's new Meiji government came face-to-face with the need to create European-style art schools museums government-sponsored exhibitions and artifact preservation policies and even to establish Japanese words for "art" "painting" "artist" and "sculpture." Modern Japanese Art and the Meiji State represents nothing less than a reconceptualization of the field of Japanese art history. It exposes the politics through which the words categories and values that still structure our understanding of the field came to be while revealing the historicity of Western and non-Western art history. Translated into English from the Japanese by Hiroshi Nara. Doshin Sato is professor of Japanese art history at the Tokyo University of the Arts. The original Japanese edition of this book published in 1999 was the winner of the Suntory Prize for Social Sciences and Humanities. Getty Publications, Los Angeles: 2011 hardcover

JAPAN
The Reconstruction of Tokyo.
Tokyo: Tokyo Municipal Office 1933. First edition. Thick quarto xx 419 pp. With over 100 illustrations from photographs maps and charts many in color including large folding map in pocket at rear. Publisher's rust cloth with wrap-around gilt design on covers gilt spine lettering pictorial endpapers. A beautiful copy with only the slightest wear to spine extremities. On September 1 1923 just before noon an earthquake of magnitude 8.3 occurred near the densely populated modern industrial cities of Tokyo and Yokohama Japan. Though not the largest earthquake to ever hit Japan the proximity to Tokyo and Yokohama and the surrounding areas with combined populations numbering 2 million made it one of the most devastating quakes ever to hit Japan. Tokyo's principle business and industrial districts lay in ruins. Deaths were estimated at nearly 100000 with an additional 40000 missing. Hundreds of thousands were left homeless in the resulting fires. After the rescue operations had set in and after the debris had been removed rebuilding began - first at a very slow pace. But from 1926 on the rebuilding took a breath-taking speed and by 1932 Tokyo and Yokohama were modern vibrating cities. In 1932 the population of the Tokyo prefecture had risen to 6 million from 3.7 million in 1920. This book documents that rebuilding and is a priceless account both in terms of the powerful images in the book and as a testament to Japanese stoicism and industriousness.
