‎Commagene: The land of gods between the Taurus and the Euphrates. An archaeological guide.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (22 x 14 cm). In English. 372 p. Color and b/w ills. "The country of ancient Commagene spreads between the Taurus Mountains and the Euphrates in South-Eastern Turkey. Located at the eastern fringe of the Mediterranean world Commagene has been a border region for many centuries. Rooted in Near Eastern traditions the country was exposed to frequently changing religious systems and political powers. Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Armenians, Seljuks, Crusaders, Mamluks, and Ottomans have left their mark on the fertile valleys and the barren hills. There are famous and much frequented places like the grave tumulus of the Hellenistic king Antiochos I on the Nemrut Dag, which is inscribed in the UNESCO world heritage list, or the roman city of Zeugma with its splendid mosaics. However, a considerably larger number of attractive monuments and sites - ranging from Hittite reliefs to impressive medieval castles - are to be explored in Commagene. This richly illustrated book provides a broad overview of the most important sites and their historical background. It aims at travellers in the region as well as readers interested in the history and archaeology of ancient Turkey.".‎

‎MINISTERE DES AFFAIRES ETRANGERES = FOREIGN MINISTRY OF FRANCE.‎

‎[THE FRENCH AND BRITISH CONFLICTS ON EGYPTIAN REGION] Affaires du Haut-Nil et du Bahr-el-Ghazal, 1897-1898 (Documents Diplomatiques) [i.e. Upper Nile and Bahr-el-Ghazal Affairs, 1897-1898 (Diplomatic Documents)].‎

‎Very Good French Original wrappers. Folio. (32 x 21 cm). bilingual in English and French. [8], 26, [2] p. First printed edition of these minutes by the Foreign Ministry of France in 1897-1898 on Bahr Al-Ghazal, Lake Chad, and the Upper Nile regions. The tensions between French and British relations were high in the 1875-1898 era. especially over Egyptian and African issues. At several points, these issues brought the two nations to the brink of war; but the situation was always defused diplomatically. For two decades, there was peace-but it was "an armed peace, characterized by alarms, distrust, rancor, and irritation." During the Scramble for Africa in the 1880s, the British and French generally recognized each other's spheres of influence. In an agreement in 1890, Great Britain was recognized in Bahr-el-Ghazal and Darfur, while Wadai, Bagirmi, Kanem, and the territory to the north and east of Lake Chad were assigned to France. The Suez Canal, initially built by the French, became a joint British-French project in 1875, as both saw it as vital to maintaining their influence and empires in Asia. In 1882, ongoing civil disturbances in Egypt (see Urabi Revolt) prompted Britain to intervene, extending a hand to France. France's expansionist Prime Minister Jules Ferry was out of office, and the government was unwilling to send more than an intimidating fleet to the region. Britain established a protectorate, as France had a year earlier in Tunisia, and popular opinion in France later put this action down to duplicity. It was at this time that the two nations established co-ownership of Vanuatu. The Anglo-French Convention of 1882 was also signed to resolve territory disagreements in western Africa. One brief but dangerous dispute occurred during the Fashoda Incident in 1898 when French troops tried to claim an area in the Southern Sudan, and a British force purporting to be acting in the interests of the Khedive of Egypt arrived. Under heavy pressure, the French withdrew and Britain took control over the area, As France recognized British control of Sudan. France received control of the small kingdom of Wadai, Which consolidated its holdings in northwest Africa. France had failed in its main goals. Fashoda was a diplomatic victory for the British because the French realized that in the long run, they needed friendship with Britain in case of a war between France and Germany. (Wikipedia).‎

‎MORGENS TROLLE LARSEN.‎

‎Kültepe tabletleri VI-A.= The Archive of the Salim-Assur Family. Vol. 1: The first two generations.‎

‎New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (28 x 20 cm). In English and Turkish. [xvi], 585 p. Kültepe tabletleri VI-A.= The Archive of the Salim-Assur Family. Vol. 1: The first two generations. The edition is only the first part out of five that deal with the family archive of Salim-Assur, and includes only 295 out of 1100 texts from the archive. Half of these texts are duplicates and envelopes, so that the actual amount of unique documents is somewhat smaller. Larsen has divided the texts into differ-ent dossiers with distinctive subjects that deal with the archives of Issu-arik and his two sons Iddin-Abum and Salim-Assur until their death. The volume ends with quarrels about the inheritance of Salim-Assur, with his son Ennum-Assur taking the initiative. We know Ennum-Assur also from out-side the Kt 94/k archive, as he is mentioned with patronymic by Buzazu son of Pusuken in a letter to Puzur-Assur son of Isar-kitti-Assur (CTMMA 1 71:5). Another interesting link with the Pusuken archive can be found in TC 3 36, where Pusuken is in the process buying the house of a son of Issu-arik. Larsen suggested that the most probable candidate for this son was Assur-bel-awatim. The family of Salim-Assur is well established, with Larsen discussing the major figures briefly and providing a family tree. The texts in the archive date from the time of Issu-arik (KEL 40/1-85) to the death of Salim-Assur (KEL 103/4) and the quarrelers following his disappearance that ended with the murder of Ennum-Assur (KEL 105/6). The texts are divided not according to the archeological number of the texts; rather all documents are sorted to subject in different dossiers. The content of these dossiers is further-more discussed in the introduction. This favorable method cannot prevent some chronological overlay between the dif-ferent dossiers, though this is solved by references in the commentary of the texts. The archive features two rather large dossiers on the death of the two brothers Iddin-abum (48 texts) and Salim-Assur (88 texts). Both dossiers were also discussed by Hertel; in his unpublished Copenhagen dissertation (2007: first dossier p. 438ff., second dossier p. 303ff.); an updated version has appeared since (Hertel & Larsen 2010). Iddin-abum had appointed his brother as successor at his deathbed. Salim-Assur seems to have chosen Ennam-Assur in his will, though in his case problems would arise, as an alternate testament seems to have existed. Testaments are relatively rare in the Old Assyrian text corpus, though they are frequently referred to in the texts. In AKT 6a they are mentioned, but not found, as they were kept in Assur. What we do have tells us more on arrangements made before the death of a trader. Though it seems to be standard for the Assyrians to have a testament composed, no heir in business was appointed in the found examples. It appears that this had something to do with the minor status of the traders who drew up the known testaments; we know from other refer-ences that a successor could be appointed. This new family leader was either a brother or son. (Source: BIBLIOTHECA ORIENTALIS LXIX N° 5-6, september-december 2012). ‎Mut Claudiopolis. Mersin - Turkey. Travel guide.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (22 x 12 cm). In English. 111, [7] p., color and b/w ills. Claudiopolis was an ancient city of Cilicia. Ammianus mentions Silifke and Claudiopolis as cities of Cilicia, or of the country drained by the Calycadnus; and Claudiopolis was a colony of Claudius Caesar. It is described by Theophanes of Byzantium as situated in a plain between the two Taurus Mountains, a description which exactly, corresponds to the position of the basin of the Calycadnus. Claudiopolis may therefore be represented by Mut, which is higher up the valley than Seleucia, and near the junction of the northern and western branches of the Calycadnus. It is also the place to which the pass over the northern Taurus leads from Laranda. Pliny (v. 24) mentions a Claudiopolis of Cappadocia, and Ptolemy (v. 7) has a Claudiopolis in Cataonia. Both these passages and those of Ammianus and Theophanes are cited to prove that there is a Claudiopolis in Cataonia, though it is manifest that the passage in Ammianus at least can only apply to a town in the valley of the Calycadnus in Cilicia Trachea. The two Tauri of Theophanes might mean the Taurus and Antitaurus. But Hierocles places Claudiopolis in Isauria, a description which cannot apply to the Claudiopolis(es) of Pliny and Ptolemy. The city apparently received the Roman colony name Colonia Iulia Felix Augusta Ninica, and minted coins in antiquity.‎

‎Neolithic site of Çatalhöyük.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Cr. 8vo. (19 x 11 cm). In English. 127 p., ills. Neolithic site of Çatalhöyük. Two hills form the 37 ha site on the Southern Anatolian Plateau. The taller eastern mound contains eighteen levels of Neolithic occupation between 7400 bc and 6200 bc, including wall paintings, reliefs, sculptures and other symbolic and artistic features. Together they testify to the evolution of social organization and cultural practices as humans adapted to a sedentary life. The western mound shows the evolution of cultural practices in the Chalcolithic period, from 6200 bc to 5200 bc. Çatalhöyük provides important evidence of the transition from settled villages to urban agglomeration, which was maintained in the same location for over 2,000 years. It features a unique streetless settlement of houses clustered back to back with roof access into the buildings.‎

‎Tralleis Güney Nekropolü Terrakotta figürinleri.‎

‎New Turkish Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Turkish. 335, [1] p., 139 numerous color, 126 b/w plates, tables. Tralleis Güney Nekropolü Terrakotta figürinleri. Terrakotta figurines of Tralleis Necropole. The terracotta figurines in this study were found throughout the South Necropolis of the Tralleis, with a large number coming from the barrel vaulted chamber tombs. The figurines were recovered in the earlier salvage excavations by the Aydin Archaeological Museum. The excavators records of objects found in a representative series of graves must form basis for our study of the chronology and styles of the figurines. Thirty three contexts are listed as of interest, but not of sharply defined chronological significance. The evidence for dating is derived for the most part from pottery, coins and other archaeological remains, the cemetery of Tralleis dates from the 2nd century B.C.E. at least through the 2nd century A. C. E. The figurines were each cast in a mold. In the 2nd century B.C.E. however, the number of molds used in the creation of a single figurine was increased. The manufacture of terracotta figurines in Roman Imperial Period was an industry. The clay of the Tralleis figurines are rather coarse but homogeneous and contains a fair amount of mica. Yellowish red clay with some mica was used rarely, and mostly in 2nd century B.C.E. Reddish yellow clay, sometimes burned light red, with mica, is characteristic of the finest pieces. The commonest clay is reddish yellow usually with mica, and often with a light white slim according to Munsell Soil Color Chart. According to the stylistic analysis, the influences from Attica, Tanagra, Boeotia and Myrina also are obvious among the early figurines at Tralleis. Flying figurines as Eros and Nike were prominent in the 2nd century B.C.E. Religious types are also found and include Aphrodite and worshipers. Other representations of deities included an Ariadne, Dionysos and his entourage. During the second half of the 2nd century B.C.E. genre groups with animals and standing draped women proliferated. Tralleis was destroyed by an earthquake in 26 B.C.E. and reconstructed with the efforts of Emperor Augustus. The typology repertoire of the 1st century A.C.E. consists of standing draped women and men, athletes with quiver, masks, actors, puppets, caricatures, animals and other mythological and religious types. This type of figurines was commonly found in most of the Mediterranean sites in the Hellenistic and Roman Imperial Period. The works of the coroplasts whose signatures are found in the South Necropolis may be examined here in more detailed. These are Trophimos, Simalionos, Theodotos, AA and the others. The signatures show that workshops were active at Tralleis in the Roman Imperial Period as early as the 1st century B.C.E. and continued to produce figurines until the 2nd century A.C.E. We may therefore assume the fabric of which the coroplasts are made to be a local fabric of its period. Each figurine is introduced by a general commentary that outlines the typology, chronology and significance of the class in the catalogue. Catalogue descriptions give factual detail, references to previous publications, and close parallels. Finally, typology and style of these examples can also be compared with the dated finds from the other contemporary sites and contexts. On the whole, the evidence presented points to the fact that the 2nd century B.C.E. was the most prosperous ones for the city of Tralleis.‎

‎Tralleis Güney Nekropolü Terrakotta figürinleri.‎

‎As New Turkish Paperback. Roy. In the historical process, Jews began to live outside of Iudaea because of various wars since the famous Babylonian exile, and thus the Jewish diaspora emerged. For this reason, in Jewish religious texts, clues can be followed in areas where Jews spread or in which they establish a commercial relationship - for example, Cilicia. For the Jews in the Old Age, Cilicia's land suitable for agriculture, its temperate structure similar to ludaea in terms of climate, its sea limiter, should be attractive to live. This book aims at examining Cilicia, a place of wild nature images in the past, and the ancient congregation of an ancient congregation that has a special place in history. Thus, the existence of Jews in Cilicia is being presented to readers with concrete data.‎
