First edition.<br /><br />Martin Frobisher's third 1571 voyage to Baffin Island was the consequence of the flawed logic and excessive optimism of the adventurers of the ephemeral Company of Cathay. Their original intention - to find a northwestern route to the Far East - had been largely forgotten following the imagined discovery of gold- and silver-bearing ore in Meta Incognita the Unknown Limits as Elizabeth I had named the forbidding and icy landscape which Frobisher and seventeen mariners had first sighted two years earlier. This was to be the English nation's first experience of a "gold-rush" and if many refused to be swayed by the promise of an empire to rival that of Spain others including the Queen herself and many of the Privy Counselors allowed their cupidity to override all caution. As the likelihood of future profits was downgraded in successive assays of the mineral samples the adventures accepted that a much larger expedition would be required to extract sufficient ore to provide an adequate return upon monies already spent. The result - a fleet of fifteen ships crewed by almost five hundred men - remains the largest fleet to ever have visited Baffin Island. There travails in the arctic seas near comic failures of navigation and the back breaking task of mining the largest possible amount of mineral ore in the time allowed by the brief arctic summer were recorded by an unsurpassed body of eye-witness reports all of which for the first time have been assembled in a single volume. Series III volume 7 First edition.<br /><br />João Rodrigues was born about 1561 in Sernancelhe Portugal and reached Japan in 1577; his reason for sailing to Asia at such a young age are not known. Shortly after his arrival from Macau to Japan he joined the novitiate in the Society of Jesus. He devoted himself to teaching grammar and Latin while learning the Japanese language. A few years later he completed his studies in theology in Nagasaki. Once ordained priest in Macau in 1580 he returned to Japan where he became a merchant diplomat politician and interpreter between the Japanese and foreign sailors. His fluency in eastern languages earned him a special relationship with key Japanese leaders during the civil war and the consolidation of the shogunate of Tokugawa Ieyasu. In this period he witnessed the expansion of the Portuguese presence and the arrival of the first English William Adams. During this period he wrote his observations on Japanese life including political events of the emergence of the shogunate and a detailed description of the tea ceremony. His writings reveal an open mind about the culture of his host country including praise of the holiness of the Buddhist monks. João Rodrigues was expelled from Japan in 1610 as result of an incident with the Portuguese ship Madre de Deus. The ship had been involved in a conflict in Macau in 1609 in which Japanese sailors were killed. Upon returning to Nagasaki the Japanese authorities tried to tackle and arrest the captain. In the melee that followed the ship was burned and sank while trying to leave the port and in retaliation for this incident Christian missionaries were expelled. Returning to Macau where he spent the rest of his life. In 1628 the declining Ming dynasty appealed to the Portuguese for support against Manchu invaders and Rodrigues accompanied two military expeditions to Beijing for this purpose. The elderly Jesuit was duly honored by the Ming government before returning to Macao where died in 1633. Rodrigues earned a place in the history of Japanese European cultural relations by publishing Arte da lingoa de Iapam. Nagaski 1604-1608 a Portuguese grammar of the Japanese language followed b a revised edition Arte breve da lingoa japoa. Macao 1620.
