JOHNSON CHARLES W
Ice Ship: The Epic Voyages Of The Polar Adventurer Fram
University Press of New England: Hanover and London:. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. In the golden age of polar exploration from the mid-1800s to the early 1900s many an expedition set out to answer the big questionwas the Arctic a continent an open ocean beyond a barrier of ice or an ocean covered with ice No one knew for the ice had kept its secret well; ships trying to penetrate it all failed often catastrophically. Norway's charismatic scientist-explorer Fridtjof Nansen convinced that it was a frozen ocean intended to prove it in a novel if risky way: by building a ship capable of withstanding the ice joining others on an expedition then drifting wherever it took them on a relentless one-way journey into discovery and fame . . . or oblivion. Ice Ship is the story of that extraordinary ship the Fram from conception to construction through twenty years of three epic expeditions to its final resting place as a museum. It is also the story of the extraordinary men who steered the Fram over the course of 84000 miles: on a three-year ice-bound drift finding out what the Arctic really was; in a remarkable four-year exploration of unmapped lands in the vast Canadian Arctic; and on a two-year voyage to Antarctica where another famous Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen claimed the South Pole. Ice Ship will appeal to all those fascinated with polar exploration maritime adventure and wooden ships and will captivate readers of such books as The Endurance In the Heart of the Sea and The Last Place on Earth. With more than 100 original photographs the book brings the Fram to life and light. University Press of New England: Hanover and London: hardcover

Kandt, Richard:
Caput Nili. Eine empfindsame Reise zu den Quellen des Nils. Reprint der 6. Auflage, Berlin 1921. Mit einem Vorwort v. Ulrich Löber u. einem Beitrag v. Reinhart Bindseil.
Gutes Exemplar; Einband etwas berieben. - Mit beiliegender Faltkarte. - Faksimile in Frakturschrift. - Richard Kandt (vor 1894 Richard Kantorowicz; * 17. Dezember 1867 in Posen; † 29. ... (Vorwort U. Löber) // INHALT / Kapitel: Zur vierten Fahrt; Zur dritten Fahrt; Ein Wegweiser; Brief I; Sansibar und die Deutsch-Ostafrikanische Küste (Briefe II - IV); Auf der großen Karawanenstraße (Briefe V - VII); Tabora (Brief VIII); Die Ugalla-Sindi-Expedition (Briefe IX - XIII); Intermezzo (Briefe XIV - XVII); Vom Blatternlager nach Tabora (Brief XVIII); Vegetationsbilder (Brief XIX); Von Tabora nach Uschirombo (Briefe XX - XXI); Zum Alexandra-Nil (Brief XXII); Am Hofe des Königs; Ringmarsch um die Vulkane; Zur Nilquelle; Vom Tanganika zum Kiwu; Am Westufer des Kiwu; Zwischen Kiwu und Albert-Eduard-See; Am Ostufer des Kiwu; Bootsfahrten; Verzeichnis der Lichtdrucke; Kartenbeilagen: Große Karawanenstraße Bagamojo - Tabora 1:4000000 / Kiwu-See und Nilquellen 1:1000000. The Gilgit Game The Explorers of the Western Himalayas 1865-95

Previous owner's name and store stamp on FFEP book review pasted in on back of FFEP. ; A bright solid book. Dust jacket in Mylar jacket protector unclipped. ; B&W Photographs; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 277 pages; "The exploration and appropriation of the wilderness in the heart of the Western Himalayas has become known as the "Gilgit Game" in recognition of its importance as a crucial episode in the "Great Game"--the century-long rivalry between Russia and British India for control of Central Asia. Indeed authors from Kipling to Masters have treated this struggle as the epitome of this competition between nations. But as John Keay shows in this fascinating and readable account of an exciting period in colonial India the real characters in this drama were more than a match for their fictional counterparts. With humor sympathy and admiration of this small group of intelligence agents Keay describes the activities that had such far-reaching repercussions in the region. Through extensive research and his own intimate knowledge of the terrain Keay sheds new light on the once top secret geographical discoveries made by these men discoveries they were prevented from publishing during their lifetimes.A fresh look at a little-known aspect of political intrigue this is the first narrative account of Himalayan exploration set against the backdrop of espionage and military brinkmanship." . Keeler Mary Frear ed
Sir Francis Drake's West Indian Voyage 1585-86
xiv358 pages with frontispiece map 15 plates 3 maps appendices bibliography and index. Octavo 8 3/4" x 5 3/4" issued in blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and gilt pictorial sailing ship to front cover. Second series volume 148. First edition.

Significant in the history of Anglo-Spanish relations and of English ventures was Drake's expedition to the West indies in 1585-86. His raids on Spanish towns on both sides of the Atlantic were aimed not only to gather treasure but to bring a military challenge to the empire of Phillip II. The voyage was lined also with the plantation projects of Raleigh and ended with Drake bring home the discouraged settlers of the first Virginia colony. Although not a financial success the expedition attracted wide attention in England and on the continent and was a prelude to the events of 1588. For over three centuries after the voyage the main source of information about it was the lively narrative strongly propagandistic in tone that was published in 1588 and 1589. In the present volume this account attributed to Captain Walter Bigges has been critically edited in the light of evidence now available from English and Spanish sources. Printed also are the documents relating to ships and personnel and to financial accounts of the expedition. Included too are the journal from the vice-admiral's ship the Primrose edited from the original manuscript the fragmentary journals from ships of two other major officers and an important newsletter. Among the illustrations are a previously unpublished map relating to Drake's stop at Vigo as well as the Boazio maps which are shown in differing sizes and details. Mary Frear Keller's introduction discusses the expedition in the context of Elizabethan policies in the pre-Armada years. She point out new evidence on Drake's administrative practices on his negotiations with Spanish officials and on his dealings with a troublesome rear-admiral. Appendices provide critical notes on the Boazio maps and the circumstances of the publication of the Bigges account.

Condition:

Light rubbing to jacket edges else a better than very good copy in like jacket.
