The Discovery of the South Shetland Islands / The Voyage of the Brig Williams 1819-1820 and The Journal of Midshipman C.W. Poynter as recorded in contemporary documents and the Journal of Midshipman C W Poynter
xv248 pages with 16 colour plates including frontispiece 6 monochrome plates 9 maps appendices bibliography and index. Small quarto 10" x 7" issued in original dark blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and pictorial representation of the ship Victoria blind stamped in gilt on the cover. Works issued by the Hakluyt Society Third Series Number 4. Edited by R J Campbell. First edition.

In 1819 William Smith with a general cargo from Montevideo to Valparaiso sailed further south round Cape Horn than his predecessors in the hope of finding favorable winds. He sighted land in 62 degrees South. His report to the Senior Naval Officer in Valparaiso was ridiculed but on a subsequent voyage he confirmed his discovery taking soundings and sailing along the coast. As a result Captain Shirreff the Senior Naval Officer charted his vessel the brig Williams and having put Edward Bransfield the master of his ship HMS Andromache in charge sent her to survey the new discovery. Charles Poynter was one of the midshipmen who sailed with Bransfield. His account of this expedition which forms the principal part of this volume recently came to light in New Zealand and is the only first-hand account of the voyage during which the Antarctic mainland was sighted for the first time that appears to have survived. The introduction contains some remarks on the South Shetland Islands followed by chapters giving a brief look at the history of the Spanish in South America and the British presence in the area together with the speculation leading to the search for Antarctica and chapters on early nineteenth-century navigation and hydrographic surveying. There were several second hand accounts of William Smith's earlier voyages and Bransfield's expedition which appeared in reports journals and books at the time. These are included with brief accounts of other voyages to the South Shetland Islands which took place while Bransfield was in the area to complete the picture. Poynter's journal explains the reasoning behind most of the names given to land features some of which were not included in the published accounts at the time. There are also three charts and a number of views which are reproduced and an assessment of the accuracy of this short but remarkable voyage to be made. Finally the chart published as a result of Barnsfield's survey is included.

Condition:

A fine copy in like jacket. Hakluyt Society hardcover

Spine very lightly darkened; ink private owner name and armorial bookplate at front; page edges yellowed else a fine bright & tight copy. >>> Brigadier-General Cecil Godfrey Rawling CMG CIE DSO FRGS.was a British soldier explorer and author whose expeditions to Tibet and Dutch New Guinea brought acclaim from the Royal Geographic Society and awards from the Dutch and Indian governments. He published two books detailing his experiences and served in the British Army on the North-West Frontier of India and in France during the First World War. It was during this latter service that he was killed in action aged 47 during the Battle of Passchendaele. In 1903 he reentered Tibet to begin a professional survey although without official sanction and in the following year Captain Rawling was attached to the British expedition to Tibet charged with exploring and surveying the mountainous terrain. During the diplomatic expedition and the campaign which followed it Rawling surveyed over 40000 square miles 100000 km2 of Tibet in addition to his military duties. His team even explored the foothills of Everest and included parts of the mountain in his survey establishing it as the highest mountain in the Himalayas. It is said that had his seniors on the expedition not forbidden it he would have become the first white man to attempt to climb the mountain from the north face. He was also the first person to successfully identify the source of the river Brahmaputra after a lengthy and hazardous journey across the war zone. Upon his return to England Rawling received numerous accolades including a CIE from the Indian government and in 1909 was awarded the Murchison Bequest of the Royal Geographic Society in London of which he was a fellow." - Wikipedia. The Voyage of Semen Dezhnev in 1648: Bering's Precursor with Selected Documents
xiv326 with 23 maps 3 illustrations bibliography and index. Octavo 8 3/4" x 5 1/2" issued in blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and gilt sailing ship to front cover. Second Series volume 159. First edition.

In 1736 Gerhard Muller a member of the New Russian Academy of Sciences while gathering historical materials in Siberia uncovered in Yakutsk reports briefly describing a voyage in 1648 from the Arctic river Kolyma around a great rocky promontory to a point south of the Pacific river Anadyr'. The reports where those of Semen Dezhnev leader of the expedition and one of its 26 survivors. They gave very few details about the voyage but said enough to lead Muller to conclude that it demonstrated the separation of Asia and America a matter insufficiently determined in 1728 by Vitus Bering. Muller published an account of the voyage in 1758 and it aroused considerable interest for it answered the long-standing question of the geographical relation between Asia and America and became a factor in the sending to the north Pacific of Captain Cook to look for a northwest or northeast passage between Europe and the Pacific. Interest in the voyage declined after Cook's time and did not revive until the end of the next century when new material was discover in the Russian archives. That and the frontal attack in 1914 on the evidence for the voyage and Muller's conclusion from it by the American historian Frank A Golder led in time especially after World War II to a more extensive examination of it by Soviet scholars and to the uncovering of new materials relating to it. Unfortunately these materials add very few details about the voyage but they do provide information about the setting and circumstances in which it took place its antecedents and aftermath and led to a more searching probing of the episode. All of this justifies a drawing together and critical examination of the relevant documents and studies made of the voyage into a single and balanced treatment of it and its participants on the bias of which a judicious conclusion may be drawn as to its actuality and its significance.

Condition:

Jacket has some rubbing at points else a very good to fine copy in like jacket.
