Sauer Martin 1785a1806
2 volumes with Atlas. 4xxiv385 pages with xxii-xxiv lists books of voyages available from the publisher; 4418 pages with appendix containing vocabularies of the languages of Yukagir Yakut Tungoose Kamchatka the Aleutian Islands and Kadiak and inex. Atlas with title list of plates 14 engraved plates & large folding engraved map. Text volumes are small octavo 7¾" x 4½" 19th century quarter calf & boards spines tooled in gilt morocco lettering pieces; atlas is quarto 11" x 7½" in period tree calf spine tooled in gilt. Translated by J Castéra. Howes S-117 First French Edition.

Martin Sauer was an English civil servant who knew Russian French and German. He became acquainted with Joseph Billings in St Petersburg in the 1780s. He agreed to join Billings expedition as his secretary and interpreter. It was agreed that he would write the official account but there is some controversy about his actives when he returned to St Petersburg in 1794. It has been suggested that he left hurriedly for England with much of the important archival material from the voyage including diaries and secret reports so that he could publish a record of the expedition before Russian authorities and scholars in the Academy of Sciences could review its details. Sauer's An account of the Geographical and Astronomical Expedition to the Northern Parts of Russia was published in London in 1802. It contains an abundance of detail about eastern Siberia and the Aleutian Islands and records the expeditions visits to Kodiak Island Prince William Sound and the coast south as far as Yakutat Bay.

The chart was made by Aaron Arrowsmith from Sauer's notes and Billings observations and the whole complements well the other contemporary accounts of the expedition by the cartographer Gavriil Sarychev and the naturalist Carl Heinrich Merck. Aaron Arrowsmith 1750–1823 was an English cartographer engraver and publisher and founding member of the Arrowsmith family of geographers. He moved to Soho Square London from Winston County Durham when about twenty years of age and was employed by John Cary the engraver and William Faden. He became Hydrographer to the Prince of Wales ca. 1810 and subsequently to the King in 1820. In January 1790 he made himself famous by his large chart of the world on Mercator projection. Four years later he published another large map of the world on the globular projection with a companion volume of explanation.

Condition:

Some rubbing and wear to coves of both atlas and text volumes some chipping to spine ends small gouge at back of atlas and stamp to front end paper else in very good condition.
Seventh Continent;: Saga of Australasian Exploration in Antarctica

by William Arthur Scholes Author

Publisher: The British Book Centre Inc. New York

probable First Edition unstated

Hardcover

5 1/2 x 8 3/4 inches 226 pages - B/w photos & maps

Story of role of Australasian scientists and explorers in the conquest of Antarctica 1895-1950

--------------------------------

William Arthur Scholes 1916-2007 was one of 14 scientists and technicians who went to Heard Island in 1947 to establish a weather station as the first project for the Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition.

Working as a radio operator and as a reporter for the Department of Information he spent 14 months on the island 4000 kilometres south-west of Perth in the sub-Antarctic region. He later wrote a book about the expedition Fourteen Men which was named Book of the Month by the influential US reading club of that name and was also published in Spanish Dutch and Japanese.

Of arriving at Heard Island Scholes wrote: "The first glimpse of the island was possibly the best view we had. In the dead calm blue of the sea there lay the island alone and majestic like a great white iceberg. We were about 10 miles off. In the empty space of the horizon there appeared this massive white shape. Clouds traced lazy trails round its sides. High above the clouds was the white dome of Big Ben Peak like a white arc or moon in the sky. The centre of the mountain was hidden by lower clouds."

He went on to chronicle the ups and downs of a few good men building a scientific outpost in the cold wet snow and ice in chapters with names such as "The Hurricane" "The 'Basher Gang"' "The Edge of the Moon" and "At last the Summer".

Born in Cheshire England Scholes was the youngest of three children of an Anglican minister. He went to London University took a diploma in journalism and joined the Central News Agency as a cadet reporter.

He came to Australia in 1936 working in Melbourne then in Sydney for The Daily Telegraph as a district correspondent covering the North Shore. He moved to Hong Kong after 18 months and joined the South China Morning Post.

Scholes visited Japan just before the outbreak of war in 1939 and wrote a series of articles for the Sydney Sun the Auckland Star and the Chicago Tribune. He then returned to Sydney joined the Sun and studied part time at the Marconi School of Wireless to become a radio officer in the merchant marine.

He served on troopships around New Guinea and on the Norwegian tanker Vera in the North Atlantic as chief radio officer. It was during an Atlantic crossing that Scholes first experienced polar conditions when the Vera lost its convoy and grazed an iceberg between East Greenland and Iceland losing all the starboard lifeboats.

Scholes was elected a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society after lecturing about Heard Island in 1949. He went back to the Antarctic in 1951 as a radio operator on the British oceanographic research ship Discovery II which surveyed the Shackleton ice shelf and the coast of the Australian Antarctic Territory.

Scholes then returned to writing for a living. He moved to Port Macquarie in 1983 to write for US technical publications. He also wrote two other books Seventh Continent and Sixth Continent.

He is survived by his wife Aileen their two daughters Eleanor and Anthea and four grandchildren.
The British Book Centre Inc. hardcover
