‎RAZOUX PIERRE‎

‎The Iran - Iraq War‎

‎Belknap Press Cambridge: 2015. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. From 1980 to 1988 Iran and Iraq fought the longest conventional war of the twentieth century. The tragedies included the slaughter of child soldiers the use of chemical weapons the striking of civilian shipping in the Gulf and the destruction of cities. The Iran-Iraq War offers an unflinching look at a conflict seared into the region's collective memory but little understood in the West. Pierre Razoux shows why this war remains central to understanding Middle Eastern geopolitics from the deep-rooted distrust between Sunni and Shia Muslims to Iran's obsession with nuclear power to the continuing struggles in Iraq. He provides invaluable keys to decipher Iran's behavior and internal struggle today. Razoux's account is based on unpublished military archives oral histories and interviews as well as audio recordings seized by the U.S. Army detailing Saddam Hussein's debates with his generals. Tracing the war's shifting strategies and political dynamicsmilitary operations the jockeying of opposition forces within each regime the impact on oil production so essential to both countriesRazoux also looks at the international picture. From the United States and Soviet Union to Israel Europe China and the Arab powers many nations meddled in this conflict supporting one side or the other and sometimes switching allegiances. The Iran-Iraq War answers questions that have puzzled historians. Why did Saddam embark on this expensive ultimately fruitless conflict Why did the war last eight years when it could have ended in months Who if anyone was the true winner when so much was lost Translated into English from the French by Nicholas Elliott. 18 halftones 30 maps 10 graphs 17 tables. Pierre Razoux is Research Director at the Institut de Recherche Stratgique de l'Ecole Militaire IRSEM Paris. "A heavyweight work of history Razoux brings a cool factual approach to a large subject that has hitherto received too little attention Razoux's deep research and analytical style make the book something of a general-staff history It adds up to something extraordinary."Bartle Bull The Wall Street Journal "Once a decade a book appears in which the creative genius and technical skill of the author perfectly match a vast subject. The French defense expert Pierre Razoux's book on the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war is superb and hugely topical Razoux has a brilliant and economical way of making what became huge and complex battles intensely readable the maps are excellent too This is a masterwork and anyone interested in where Iran goes nextfor Iraq will surely cease to be a unitary stateshould read the historian of real genius."Michael Burleigh The Times "Razoux's detailed wide-ranging and elegantly written account is the best hope we have of seeing this epoch-defining conflict for what it was. Drawing on a decade of research during which he accessed Saddam's audio records of military and political meetings investigated Iranian sources and conducted countless interviews with military political and business figures from around the world Razoux gives the reader a uniquely broad and deep look at the conflict One of the most fascinating insights this book offers is its illustration of the impact the conflict had on the Islamic Republic of Iran and how that nation moved from fledgling revolutionary state to an established Islamic theocracy Razoux's excellent and lucidly translated study does this awful conflict justice in an even-handed and professional manner. It is a must read for anyone with an interest in Iran Iraq and the region as it stands today."C. P. W. Gammell Literary Review "Pierre Razoux's The Iran-Iraq War is better by a mile than most of the military history that floods the English market. Very topical too since we will be getting to know Iran much more in future and its history should be required reading."Michael Burleigh Evening Standard "What emerges in illuminating detail from Razoux's study is the impact of the power struggle between Ayatollah Khomeini's two protgs the men he promoted and protected till the end of his life in June 1989 and left in charge of a house divided by their rivalry: Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani and Ali Hosseini Khamenei."Joost Hiltermann London Review of Books "Oddly this war isn't discussed much any more even though it is arguably the breakthrough event for the ongoing collapse of parts of the Middle East I found Pierre Razoux's The Iran-Iraq War to be a highly readable and useful account."Tyler Cowen Marginal Revolution "This is an impressive well-researched account of a conflict that helped define the modern Middle East and it explains as Razoux shows much subsequent Iraqi and Iranian history Razoux brilliantly links the conflict to the regional and Great Power politics of the period Thus the Iran-Iraq war led directly into post-Cold War geopolitics and conflict. Razoux has produced the best book available on this important war."Jeremy Black Military History "Although it was the longest war of the 20th century and caused over a million casualties the Iran-Iraq War is largely forgotten by the Western world outside of a few military analysts and Middle East scholars In spite of the ramifications of this war a complete and readable single volume narrative has not been written in the West until now. Razouxhas written a comprehensive and engrossing account of this war. Using a wealth of new or untapped sources including the complete set of transcripts of the American debriefing of Saddam Hussein after his capture in 2004 and numerous interviews with Iranian and Iraqi commanders Razoux provides unique insights into the strategic and operational thinking of both sides throughout the war What makes this book so useful to both military historians and students of Middle Eastern politics is that Razoux is able to incorporate a complete look at the ripples caused by this conflict throughout the Middle East and within the Cold War as a whole There is almost nothing occurring in the Middle East today that wasn't somehow influenced by this virtually unknown war. It has been long overdue for a comprehensive single-volume history which this book ably fulfills. This is definitely a volume that both military historians and Middle Eastern scholars should have on their bookshelf."Jerry D. Lenaburg New York Journal of Books "The Iran-Iraq War marked a turning point in the history of the Middle East. One cannot comprehend the situation in the Gulf todaythe Iranian nuclear program or the political crises in Baghdad and Tehranwithout understanding the frustrations and fears that sprang from that war."Diplomatie "This is an important book not least for the time devoted to it: ten years' work by the author with hundreds of meetings and interviews unpublished archives and the deciphering of the famous audiotapes of Saddam Hussein and his staff. And for the first time Iranian sources are included as well Razoux examines the military dimension with a knack for detail and a commanding narrative sense but also addresses the political diplomatic and economic aspects."Libration Week-End "The chapter on the tribulations of the Iranian child-soldiers is poignant the one on the torment of the Kurds gassed at Halabja overwhelming It is impossible to grasp the Iraqi and Iranian crises of the twenty-first century without going back to this first brutal war in the Gulf."Le Monde Belknap Press, Cambridge: 2015 hardcover‎

‎MACDONALD MICHAEL‎

‎Overreach: Delusions Of Regime Change In Iraq‎

‎Harvard University Press Cambridge Massachusetts and London England: 2014. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. In the run-up to the 2003 invasion of Iraq a fair number of Americans thought the idea was crazy. Now everyone except a few die-hards thinks it was. So what was going through the minds of the talented and experienced men and women who planned and initiated the war What were their assumptions Overreach aims to recover those presuppositions. Michael MacDonald examines the standard hypotheses for the decision to attack showing them to be either wrong or of secondary importance: the personality of President George W. Bush including his relationship with his father; Republican electoral considerations; the oil lobby; the Israeli lobby. He also undermines the argument that the war failed because of the Bush administration's incompetence. The more fundamental reasons for the Iraq War and its failure MacDonald argues are located in basic axioms of American foreign policy which equate America's ideals with its interests distorting both in the process and project those ideals as universally applicable. Believing that democratic principles would bring order to Iraq naturally and spontaneously regardless of the region's history and culture or what Iraqis themselves wanted neoconservative thinkers with support from many on the left advocated breaking the back of state power under Saddam Hussein. They maintained that by bringing about radical regime change the United States was promoting liberalism capitalism and democracy in Iraq. But what it did instead was unleash chaos. Michael MacDonald is Frederick L. Schuman Professor of International Relations at Williams College. "In Overreach MacDonald methodically dissects the top ten reasons most often used to explain why the war was a failure and in the process shows each to be self-serving inadequate misleadingor all of the above. He does the same for explanations of why we went to war in the first place."Scott Beauchamp Bookforum "MacDonald demonstrates vigorously and with intellectual clarity why the tenets of American exceptionalism do not usually translate to other areas of the world with Iraq being just one example. A useful analysis of failed American military initiatives that could inform future debates about interventions in traditionally despotic nations that are also split among historically hostile religious factions."Kirkus Reviews "With gloomily apt timing as U.S. bombs drop once again on a now deeply fractured Iraq international relations specialist MacDonald analyzes the usual explanations for why the Bush administration launched its invasion of Iraq in 2003 and finds them lacking. MacDonald argues that beyond oil the Israeli lobby or Bush family history the Iraq War and its horrific outcomes owe their existence to a more general trait in U.S. foreign policy namely a tendency to equate the country's values with its interests."Publishers Weekly "Overreach is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand how and why the project of 'regime change' in Iraq not only failed but was incoherent from the outset. With his characteristic political acumen meticulous research practices and marvelously lucid prose MacDonald reveals the tragic political not cultural! blindness suffered by American architects of that project. This is a gripping sad and immensely important story."Wendy Brown University of California Berkeley "It is easy to forget how many supported the Iraq War in 2002 and 2003. For anyone who wants to remember what happenedand what went wrongthis is an absorbing read. We misunderstood Iraq and the war MacDonald shows because we misunderstood ourselvesprofoundly and tragically."Russell Muirhead Dartmouth College Harvard University Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts and London England: 2014 hardcover‎

‎DABASHI HAMID‎

‎The World Of Persian Literary Humanism‎

‎Harvard University Press Cambridge Massachusetts and London England: 2012. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. What does it mean to be human Humanism has mostly considered this question from a Western perspective. Through a detailed examination of a vast literary tradition Hamid Dabashi asks that question anew from a non-European point of view. The answers are fresh provocative and deeply transformative. This groundbreaking study of Persian humanism presents the unfolding of a tradition as the creative and subversive subconscious of Islamic civilization. Exploring how 1400 years of Persian literature have taken up the question of what it means to be human Dabashi proposes that the literary subconscious of a civilization may also be the undoing of its repressive measures. This could account for the masculinist hostility of the early Arab conquest that accused Persian culture of effeminate delicacy and sexual misconduct and later of scientific and philosophical inaccuracy. As the designated feminine subconscious of a decidedly masculinist civilization Persian literary humanism speaks from a hidden and defiant vantage pointand this is what inclines it toward creative subversion. Arising neither despite nor because of Islam Persian literary humanism was the artistic manifestation of a cosmopolitan urbanism that emerged in the aftermath of the seventh-century Muslim conquest. Removed from the language of scripture and scholasticism Persian literary humanism occupies a distinct universe of moral obligations in which "a judicious lie" as the thirteenth-century poet Sheykh Mosleh al-Din Sa'di writes "is better than a seditious truth." Hamid Dabashi is Hagop Kevorkian Professor of Iranian Studies and Comparative Literature at Columbia University. "Dabashi provides a rich and varied account of classical Persian literature. Such commanding figures as Ferdowsi the 11th century poet of the 'Shahnameh' or Book of Kings one of the world's great epics stand alongside the mystical lyrical poets Hafiz and Rumi as well as the earthier Sa'di. It is one of Dabashi's accomplishments to demonstrate the unusual continuity of the Persian literary tradition which despite political upheavals and stylistic revolutionsfree verse is the norm in contemporary Persian poetryremains strong even in the teeth of brutal governmental repression."Eric Ormsby The Wall Street Journal "In The World of Persian Literary Humanism Hamid Dabashi revealed with his usual brilliance yet more aspects of a sophisticated culture to an Anglophone readership."Pankaj Mishra New Statesman "Dabashi's effortless capacious erudition is obvious all throughout. Even his offhand comments about Ferdowsi's Shahnameh or Muhammad Iqbal's Asrar-e Khodi and dozens of other canonical Persian works are uniformly brilliant."Steve Donoghue Open Letters Monthly "This is a study of profound erudition deep historical and literary knowledge and professional acumen. Dabashi marshals an impressive amount of historical material blended into a wide historical narrative."Arshin Adib-Moghaddam "In this fascinating study of the metaphysical concerns of Persian literature Dabashi presents Persian adab as a movement heretical to the ideological dispositions of Islamic empires. He traces the morality that informs the adab of the Persian language and shows how a sustained history of a millennium and a half created an amorphous literary subconscious that remained irreducible to any religious identity. A landmark work that shall nurture all future discourse on the subject."Musharraf Ali Farooqi "Dabashi is one of the world's most well-versed and learned scholars of Persian history and culture and this book could only be written by someone of his intellectual stature who shows a mastery of Persian literature over a thousand years. His creative and engaging narrative carries the reader through a literary odyssey of great geographic breadth and skillful analysis."Firoozeh Kashani-Sabet University of Pennsylvania "Elegant as well as passionate Hamid Dabashi's scholarly writings always have a revelatory quality. Yet again he uncovers in his new book an astonishing new world for English readers."Pankaj Mishra "In this powerfully challenging book Hamid Dabashi not only pays tribute to the achievements of such great Persian writers as Ferdowsi and Sa'di who expressed a subversively humanistic vision in counterpoint to the transcendental Islamic scholasticism of the past but he also shines his intellectual spotlight on influential occidental thinkers ranging from Kant to Said whose humanism whether philosophical or literary fell short of true universality. In a masterful critique of the Eurocentrism he sees as being present if masked in the teaching of Comparative Literature he rescues Persian literature from the 'overextended narratives of Orientalism and ethnic nationalism' and shows how its vibrant aesthetic and spiritual qualities find expression in the work of contemporary writers filmmakers and artists. This important work of cultural history has urgent contemporary relevance."Malise Ruthven Harvard University Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts and London England: 2012 hardcover‎

‎HOWARD ROGER‎

‎The Oil Hunters: Exploration And Espionage In The Middle East 1880-1939‎

‎Hambledon Continuum London / New York: 2008. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. The fascinating stories of the explorers spies and entrepreneurs who led the hunt for oil in the Middle East from the 1880s to the outbreak of the Second World War. The Middle East had long been awash with rumors and legends of oil rumors that gradually seeped into Western Europe. The Greek historian Herodotus had once described the existence of "oil-pits" in Mesopotamia while Jebel Zeit a mountain on the west coast of the Gulf of Suez was known by the ancients as Mons Petroleus. However the discovery that kerosene could be extracted from crude oil and used as fuel for light and heat in the late nineteenth century shifted the hunt for oil into high gear particularly in the Middle East. Against the backdrop of British and Russian and increasingly American maneuverings for dominance in the region Roger Howard explores the history of oil exploration in anecdotal style and with a lively pace. He brings to life forgotten figures such as Frank Holmes revered by the Arabs as Abu Naft the "Father of Oil" and Harry St. John Philby father of the famous British double agent Kim Philby as well as figures from the world stage such as Julius de Reuter founder of Reuters News Agency the Armenian oil magnate Calouste Gulbenkian and Chicago-born entrepreneur Charles R. Crane. Throughout the twentieth century the demand for petroleum increased and it eventually became one of the most valuable commodities traded in the world market. The Oil Hunters illustrates how today's oil giants emerged in Persia but also Iraq Mesopotamia Kuwait Saudi Arabia and Egypt. British Petroleum for example was originally the Anglo-Persian Oil Company. Considered by many to be one of the most important events of twentieth century history the discovery of Persian oil in 1908 is related here as a vivid adventure story of exploration and exploitation peopled by eccentrics adventurers and magnates. Roger Howard is a writer and broadcaster specialising in the Middle East. His most recent publication is Iran Oil: The New Middle East Challenge to America 2006. Includes an Index. ISBN: 184725232X. ‎JACOBS MATTHEW F‎

‎Imagining The Middle East: The Building Of An American Foreign Policy 1918-1967‎

‎University of North Carolina Press Chapel Hill: 2011. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. As its interests have become deeply tied to the Middle East the United States has long sought to develop a usable understanding of the people politics and cultures of the region. In Imagining the Middle East Matthew Jacobs illuminates how Americans' ideas and perspectives about the region have shaped justified and sustained U.S. cultural economic military and political involvement there. Jacobs examines the ways in which an informal network of academic business government and media specialists interpreted and shared their perceptions of the Middle East from the end of World War I through the late 1960s. During that period Jacobs argues members of this network imagined the Middle East as a region defined by certain common characteristics - religion mass politics underdevelopment and an escalating Arab-Israeli-Palestinian conflict - and as a place that might be transformed through U.S. involvement. Thus the ways in which specialists and policymakers imagined the Middle East of the past or present came to justify policies designed to create an imagined Middle East of the future. Jacobs demonstrates that an analysis of the intellectual roots of current politics and foreign policy is critical to comprehending the styles of U.S. engagement with the Middle East in a post-9/11 world. Matthew F. Jacobs is assistant professor of history at the University of Florida. "A provocative book full of extraordinary archival research Imagining the Middle East is a must-read for anyone seeking to understand the background to America's collision with radical Islam during the last quarter of the twentieth century." - Douglas Little Clark University author of American Orientalism: The United States and the Middle East since 1945 "Jacobs takes a novel compelling approach to the broad American experience in the Middle East during the formative years of U.S. national involvement there. This book makes a major contribution to the growing literature on the history of U.S. official and non-official interaction with the Middle East in the middle twentieth century." - Peter Hahn professor of history The Ohio State University University of North Carolina Press, Chapel Hill: 2011 hardcover‎

‎KLEIN JANET‎

‎The Margins Of Empire: Kurdish Militias In The Ottoman Tribal Zone‎

‎Stanford University Press Palo Alto: 2011. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. At the turn of the twentieth century the Ottoman state identified multiple threats in its eastern regions. In an attempt to control remote Kurdish populations Ottoman authorities organized them into a tribal militia and gave them the task of subduing a perceived Armenian threat. Following the story of this militia Klein explores the contradictory logic of how states incorporate groups they ultimately aim to suppress and how groups who seek autonomy from the state often attempt to do so through state channels. In the end Armenian revolutionaries were not suppressed and Kurdish leaders whose authority the state sought to diminish were empowered. The tribal militia left a lasting impact on the region and on state-society and Kurdish-Turkish relations. Putting a human face on Ottoman-Kurdish histories while also addressing issues of state-building local power dynamics violence and dispossession this book engages vividly in the study of the paradoxes inherent in modern statecraft. Janet Klein is Assistant Professor of History at The University of Akron. "Klein sheds light on some of the most important and complicated relations and negotiations the Ottoman officials were engaged in as their empire crumbled around them. She never loses sight of the broader implications of her work in this original highly valuable look at a significant period in the history of the Middle East."Resat Kasaba University of Washington "This is a most welcome and very significant contribution to Kurdish history and to the history of the eastern provinces during the late Ottoman period. The rich documentation of the saga of the Kurds as they undergo a very difficult transformation will generate healthy scholarly debate. An excellent book."Fatma Mge Gek University of Michigan Stanford University Press, Palo Alto: 2011 hardcover‎

‎GLANTZ AARON‎

‎How America Lost Iraq‎

‎Jeremy P. Tarcher / Penguin New York: 2005. Hardcover with dustjacket in protective mylar cover. Good condition. Back endpaper has been removed. Library discard. As a reporter for the staunchly antiwar Pacifica Radeio twenty-seven-year-old Aaron Glantz had spent much of early 2003 warning of catastrophe if the United States invaded Iraq. But as he watched the statue of Saddam topplehe wondered whether he was mistaken: In interviews with regular Iraqis he found wide support for the invasion. Thenpublic opinion changed. In How America Lost Iraq Glantz tells his story of working far outside the so-called Green Zone the U.S.-protected turf from which most journalistic reports are filed. Glantz's reporting reveals truths that most media outlets missedsuch as: the desertion and mass mutiny of the U.S.-trained Iraqi army;the appalling level of civilian casualties and mass incarcerations; the failure of contractors such as Halliburton and Bechtel to supply Iraqis with the ordinary necessities of daily life; and almost every poll showing that the vast majority of Iraqis want the United States to leave - a figure confirmed by recent election results. ‎ROBINS PHILIP‎

‎A History Of Jordan‎

‎Cambridge University Press Cambridge: 2004. Softcover. Good condition. Philip Robins' survey of Jordan's political history begins in the early 1920s continues through the years of the British Mandate and traces events over the next half-century to 2004. Throughout the period the country's fortunes were closely identified with its head of state King Hussein until his death in 1999. In the early days as the author testifies the King's prospects were often regarded as grim. However both King and country survived a variety of existential challenges from assassination attempts and internal subversion to a civil war with the Palestine Liberation Organisation and in the 1970s and 1980s it emerged as an apparently stable and prosperous state. However King Hussein's death the succession of his son Abdullah II and recent political upheavals have plunged the country back into uncertainty. This is an incisive account compellingly told about one of the leading players in the Middle East. The contents of this book is as follows: 1. Society in pre-state Transjordan pre 1921; 2. The making of the modern state 1921-1928; 3. The road to independence 1929-1946; 4. Expansion and succession 1947-1953; 5. From freedom to repression 1953-1966; 6. War and civil war 1967-1971; 7.
