Bound in the original printed stiff wrappers incorporating publisher's and other announcements one of which is illustrated. In a very good condition. ~ First and only edition. Selig Schachnowitz 1874-1952 noted neo-Orthodox journalist and writer. In 1908 at the invitation of Agudat Israel in Germany he became editor of Der Israelit a post he held for 30 years until the journal was closed down by the Nazis in 1938. He escaped to Switzerland taking up residence in Zurich where he continued his public and literary work until his death. Following a visit to Israel in 1931 he wrote "Zwischen Ruinen und Aufbau in Erez-Israel" which praised agricultural settlement and expressed strong reservations about the lack of religious observance in the new Israel. He was a prolific writer and although his various publicistic works were of a religious propagandist nature many were of a high literary standard and attracted numerous readers. ‎Meppel J. A. Boom 1950. Quarto. Pp. 48. With 24 full-page tinted screen gravure plates. Original pictorial wrappers. A very good copy. ~ First edition. With tintedviews of Jerusalem Nazareth Bethlehem Jericho Jordan River Mount of Olives Bethany Mountain Tabor and other views as well as several church interiors. The fine technique of gravure printing developed by Karl Klic 1841-1927 is often referred to erratically as photogravure heliogravure Kupfertiefdruck or Rakeltiefdruck terms which refer to another technique. Experiments in gravure printing began in the 1850s and reproductions of rare prints by this method became common from the 1870s. It was not however until around 1880 that the development of this most brilliant and faithful monochrome reproductive technique yet known in the history of printing began. Klic adapted the cross-line screen to the old hand photogravure process but kept it secret rather than patenting it and the technique was reinvented by others in the years afterwards. Meppel, J. A. Original pictorial grey card wrappers bit rubbed corner creased upper wrapper with tape repair for short tear. Else a fine copy. ~ A fascinating small book written and photographed by the Senior Chaplain to the Forces Egyptian Expeditionary Force with the intention to provide His Majesty's soldiers with a handy book of reference to Palestine and the Holy Land. The book contains a relatively large number of plates depicting ancient and new towns and villages holy shrines landscapes historical monuments and sites and some inhabitants. Most fascinating are the images of pure military interest: a derelict tank; a cannon named "Jericho Jane"; and a mobile gun nicknamed the "Finish Turk". Reverend Payne's text is a wonderful combination of historical background actual information traveller's notations and Biblical contemplations. He previously wrote "Jerusalem the City of the Great King" which was meant to serve as a guide book to Jerusalem. Both these books were sold in army canteen huts. In his Foreword Philip W. Chetwode Late Commanding 20th Army Corps Palestine writes: "I feel sure that all soldiers who find themselves now or in the future serving in Palestine will be grateful to him for having provided them with such a useful book which cannot fail to add to the interest of the time they spend in the Holy Land." ‎Syria Holy Land Asia Minor Djouni or the Tower of Lebanon caption title. ORIGINAL STEEL ENGRAVED PRINT.‎

‎London Jackson Fisher 1836. Original single-sheet steel engraving of a very fine quality. Overall size ca. 215 x 270 mm. Image size ca. 130 x 190 mm. A three-line caption engraved at bottom in elegant handtooled open-face and italic types. Engraved Artist's and Engraver's signatures underneath image. Engraved Publisher's line below. The print is in its original state trimmed and gilded on three sides. It is printed with warmer ink somewhat more dramatic in mood with fine crisp detail subtlety and elegance. In overall very good condition. Some spotting. Preserved in pH-balanced acid-free Renaissance archival paper. ~ A delicately executed steel engraving representing a major illustrative work on 19th century Palestine Syria and Asia Minor. William Henry Bartlett born London 1809 was one of the foremost illustrators of topography of his generation. He travelled extensively throughout Britain the Americas and the Middle East producing his work on location. In 1854 he made his last trip to the Holy Land; he died of fever on board a French ship on his return voyage to England. Bartlett's primary concern was to extract the picturesque aspects of a place and render "lively impressions of actual sights" as he wrote in the preface to "The Nile Boat" London 1849. His work became widely known through the numerous engravings after the original drawings and paintings he made. The interest in these engravings today is as much for the exquisite quality of the rendering and presentation of the architecture of the period as it is for the representation of the landscape. Published in 1836 by Peter Jackson Late Fisher Son & Co. of London it was originally accompanied by descriptions written by John Carne. London, Jackson, Fisher, (1836). unknown‎

‎Gordon Charles George.‎

‎Reflections in Palestine 1883.‎

‎London Macmillan 1884. Duodecimo. Pp. x 2 124. Plus 3 lithograph maps on 2 plates printed in black with additional colour by hand. Sketch illustrations to text. Hardcover original grey cloth printed and decorated in red and black bit discoloured and marked Chalked dark green endpapers; bookplate removed from front paste-down first inner hinge cracked. In good condition fine interior. ~ First edition. British army General Charles George Gordon 1833-85 popularly known as "Chinese Gordon" served in the Crimean War and in the 1860 expedition to China where he took part in the capture of Beijing and later commanded the Chinese force against the Taiping Rebellion. Appointed governour of Sudan in 1877 he waged a vigorous campaign against slave traders. He resigned in 1879 and in 1883 travelled to the Holy Land where he remained for a year devoting his time to the study of Biblical history and of the antiquities of Jerusalem. In 1884 he was called back to service and was sent to the Sudan to defeat the Mahdi. During the campaign he was cut-off and besieged at Khartoum for 10 months. A relief expedition belatedly dispatched from England reached the garrison two days after it had been stormed by the Mahdists who killed Gordon. Gordon's death stirred public indignation and contributed to the collapse of the Gladstone government in 1885. "Reflections in Palestine" is based on Gordon's observations during his year-long visit to the Holy Land. It was published by his friends while he was posted in Khartoum shortly before his death. The book is divided into Topographical and Religious sections. In the first Gordon describes in detail the topography and architecture of some of the major holy places he had visited while the second part is dedicated to the religious contemplations these places has aroused in him. Lytton Strachey in "Eminent Victorians" 1918 writes this wonderful memoir of Gordon: "During the year 1883 a solitary English gentleman was to be seen wandering with a thick book under his arm in the neighbourhood of Jerusalem. To the friendly inquirer he would explain that he was engaged in elucidating four questions: the site of the crucifixion; the line of division between the tribes of Benjamin and Judah; the identification of Gibeon; and the position of the Garden of Eden. He was also he would add most anxious to discover the spot where the Ark first touched ground after the subsidence of the Flood: he believed indeed that he had solved that problem as a reference to some passages in the book which he was carrying would show." ‎London John Murray 1868. Crown octavo. Pp. viii 150. Set in double columns. Hardcover original blue cloth spine gilt contemporary parochial library rules pasted onto front flyleaf bookplates old stamps some pencil underlining. In a very good condition. A nice copy of a lovely book. ~ New Edition. Noted classicist Dr. Henriëtte Boas' copy with her bookplate. On August 14 1816 Irby and Mangles Commanders in the Royal Navy left England on their way to the Levant where they travelled together for more than four years. After their return in the end of 1820 they published a selection of their correspondence with their families and offered it as a limited edition for private circulation only to their friends. This was so well received and the copies were in such request that the two had asked publisher John Murray of London to publish the book commercially. This is a fascinating book describing in great detail their encounters with the natives and how they managed to avoid being cheated or robbed by them together with a lively travel diary rich in observations on nature architecture and history. This copy is of the scarce 1868 New Edition. Tobler 145 refers to the 1847 and 1861 editions only. London, John Murray, 1868. hardcover‎

Schumacher was the first explorer to survey the region lying between Damascus and Haifa. His minute and thorough scientific observations notes maps drawings and sketches were prepared for publication at the request of the Palestine Exploration Fund by his friend the explorer Guy le Strange. They were published here for the first time. The papers of le Strange and Laurence Oliphant "A Ride Through Ajlun and the Belka During the Autumn of 1884" and "A Trip to the North-East of Lake Tiberias in Jaulan" respectively were published before but appear here for the first time in a book form. Gottlieb Schumacher 1857 settled at a very young age with his family in Haifa where his father a member of the "Temple Association" designed most of the buildings of the German Colony. Following the completion of his engineering studies in Stuttgart he returned to Haifa and was appointed Chief Engineer for the Province of Akko. He designed many buildings and was a leading figure in civil engineering. One of his most important projects was the survey of the Golan Hauran and the Ajlun districts in preparation for the construction of the Damascus-Haifa railway. In the course of this survey he produced the first accurate maps of these regions along with detailed descriptions of the archaeological remains and the present villages.
