Per capire chi lo ha ucciso e perché, la voce narrante del romanzo si improvvisa investigatore e dà voce a quanti hanno conosciuto o anche solo incontrato la vittima - la moglie, la figlia, un vicino, la portiera, un miliziano e il netturbino che ha trovato il cadavere. Ed è nell'incessante accumulo di storie che partono o si concludono con morti violente che l'assassinio di Khalìl Jàbir perde di significato, da eccezionalità diventa quotidianità. «Una mattina ho letto sul giornale un articoletto che titolava: "Abominevole delitto in zona UNESCO". Non so perché, ma ogni volta che leggo la parola "abominevole" mi schizza in testa la parola "ammirevole" e perciò la frase mi è suonata così: "Ammirevole delitto in zona UNESCO". Lo sguardo mi è balzato via, dal titolo alla foto della vittima. Un uomo sulla cinquantina inoltrata, tracce di percosse sul petto nudo, in faccia tagli e squarci».
