‎The lure of the East: British orientalist painting.= Dogu'nun cazibesi: Britanya oryantalist resmi. [Exhibition catalogue].‎

‎New English Paperback. 4to. (28 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 360 p., color ills. The lure of the East: British orientalist painting.= Dogu'nun cazibesi: Britanya oryantalist resmi. [Exhibition catalogue]. This exhibition focused on the paintings made by British artists of the 'Orient', primarily during the nineteenth century. In this context the term 'Orient', to Western Europeans, meant those parts of the eastern Mediterranean world which could be accessed relatively easily such as Egypt, Palestine and Turkey, particularly after the development of steamboat and rail travel in the 1830s. In these places, predominantly Muslim and at least nominally under the control of the Ottoman Empire, British artists, such as David Roberts, David Wilkie, William Holman Hunt, John Frederick Lewis and Frederic Leighton, sought to develop imagery which captured what they believed to be characteristic of the people, cities and landscapes of the region. In the 1970s the Palestinian-American academic Edward Said published his treatise on Orientalism, initiating a global debate over Western representations of the Middle East. For many, such representations now appeared to be a sequence of fictions, serving the West's desire for superiority and control over the East. The argument for and against Said's Orientalism has continued for thirty years. Its resonance for an exhibition such as this one, however, is as strong as ever given that, by the 1920s (the end of the period covered by this exhibition), Britain was in direct control of much of the newly abolished Ottoman Empire, including Egypt, Palestine and Iraq. As Said argued, these images cannot be viewed in isolation from their wider political and cultural context. Keeping the debates around Orientalism in mind, "The Lure of the East" focuses on the range of pictorial options open to British artists, within five major themes: portraits, genre, religious and domestic subjects and landscape. British painters came to the Middle East from a culture steeped in technical and compositional artistic traditions. Such traditions were not easily unlearned, despite the apparent difference of the people and places the artists encountered on their travels. Given this, British Orientalist painters found many challenges in attempting to represent the Middle East, but they also found inspiration and, more importantly, the freedom to rework, reinvent and even discard those conventions that defined picture-making in Britain.‎

‎Golden grace: Tombac.= Tombak: Altindan süzülen zarafet. [Exhibition catalogue].‎

‎New English Paperback. 4to. (29 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 208 p., color ills. Golden grace: Tombac.= Tombak: Altindan süzülen zarafet. [Exhibition catalogue]. "A magic world unfolded before us during our preparations for the exhibition Tombac: Golden Grace. With Yapi Kredi's tombac collection as our starting point we discovered that behind the graceful and magnificent culture created with gold was in fact thousands of years of know-how and experience. The power and prestige conferred on gold down the ages gave rise to the notion of covering items made from less valuable metals with gold and inspired the development of gold plating methods. Beginning in Central Asia, Turks played a vital role in the production of metal goods and created a valuable culture in this field, crowned during the Ottoman period with the tombac gilding technique. However, the discovery of the electrolysis technique in the 19th century, led in due course to the discontinuation of the tombac gilding method. This book was produced to introduce the still insufficiently researched art of tombac that is about to sink into oblivion. While exploring the subject of gold plating from the early period, the focus is on tombac items which formed the pinnacle of Ottoman metal craft. Nihat Tekdemir examined the gold plating methods used in different periods of the cultural history. He covered the Ottoman tombac gilding technique comprehensively, described the differences between this and other gilding techniques and named the areas in which tombac was used. Prof. Dr. Sümer Atasoy explained that copper always was the most favoured metal in Anatolia, and while relating the story of coppersmithing, he also touched upon production techniques and the decoration of copper before the tombac gilding. Ömür Tufan, expert at Topkapi Palace Museum's Copper and Chandelier Department, described the Ottoman sultan's tombac effects at Topkapi Palace, the characteristic features of the tombacs in the collection and where they were used.". ‎The Persians: Power and glory in Anatolia.= Persler: Anadolu'da kudret ve görkem. [Exhibition catalogue].‎

‎New English Paperback. 4to. (33 x 24 cm) In English and Turkish. 444 p., color and b/w ills. The Persians: Power and glory in Anatolia.= Persler: Anadolu'da kudret ve görkem. [Exhibition catalogue]. During the Persian adventure from east to west, the people of Anatolia live for 200 years under the tolerant jurisdiction of an empire with a culture and belief system distinctly foreign to them, nevertheless one that ruled based on an ideology of tolerance for 200 years. The culturally diverse land of Anatolia is deeply influenced by, and has a profound impact on the cultural exchange that took place throughout this period. Due to its geographical location Anatolia becomes the scene of encounters between the Persians and the Greeks, and facilitates the cultural blending of these eastern and western civilizations. Many new customs and practices are introduced into Anatolia with the Persians - Zoroastrianism, satrapal governance, the Royal Road, and the first postal service, to name a few - which synthesizes with the local cultural elements. This volume aims to shed a light on the process that culminated in this unique cultural fusion, as well as at all the regions and peoples that contributed to its creation. It is a rigorous "first step" towards the ultimate goal, which is to make known all aspects of Anatolia under Persian domination; and as such it is a pioneering undertaking that we hope will inspire further publications.‎

Text by Andelko Vlasic. "One of the aims of this book is to remind both the Croatian and Turkish public of the significance of the Ottoman heritage for the cultural wealth of Croatia, as well as Turkey and the balkans, because the fullness of ouor common heritage would be seriously lacking in scope if it was not for the Ottoman part. Readers of this book will, hopefully, be surprised byb the sheer number of Croatian towns and villages whose historical development included (unfortunately, mostly poorly researched) an Ottoman period, and whose topography includes numerous buildings, monuments and historical remains originating in the mentioned period.".‎

‎New English Original bdg. In Turkish. Ills. A heavy volume. Cave Inventory of Turkey. Based on the nonexistence of an archaeological inventory of Anatolia and Turkish Thrace, TAY Project was launched in 1992 by scholars from Istanbul University, Durham University, and the French Institute of Anatolian Studies at Istanbul. Aiming at documenting the known and unknown cultural heritage of Turkey, thence protecting it, the team went all around the country region by region. As a result binders have been prepared and their format has been designed to facilitate updating. Sites are given in alphabetical order and the volume is finished with a bibliography and a map of Turkey showing all the sites. By the end of 2002, 4 volumes (A4 size) covering from Paleolithic through Early Bronze Age have been completed and presented to the world of science.‎

‎La Collection de Monnaie de Pierre Willemart.= Pierre Willemart Sikke Koleksiyonu.‎

‎New English Paperback. 4to. (28 x 24 cm). In French and Turkish. 101 p., 556 color coin figures. La Collection de Monnaie de Pierre Willemart.= Pierre Willemart Sikke Koleksiyonu. A comprehensive inventory of educator, historian, and numismatics specialist Pierre Willemart's unique collection, donated to Suna and Inan Kiraç Foundation and comprising numerous coins of states on the Eurasian belt ranging from Macedonia to China and extending from 5th century B.C. to date. Apart from identification and description of coins, it also offers a pleasant journey from ancient times to the present.
