Spolia reincarnated: Afterlives of objects, materials, and spaces in Anatolia from antiquity to the Ottoman era. 10th International ANAMED Annual Symposium.
New English Paperback. 4to. (30 x 24 cm). In English. 392 p., ills. Spolia reincarnated: Afterlives of objects, materials, and spaces in Anatolia from antiquity to the Ottoman era. 10th International ANAMED Annual Symposium. At the cutting edge of spolia studies, the collected essays in this volume explore diverse forms and types of reuse in Anatolia over centuries through a cross-cultural lens. Gathered from the joining of disciplines archaeology, art history, and the history of architecture and landscapean exceptional array of examples is presented, including architectural elements and decoration, sculpture and statuary, space and buildings, and textiles and other objects. Most significantly, this ground-breaking work reveals how objects, materials, and spaces attained new meanings in their afterlives through various modes of reuse. The scholarly contributions published here stem from the Tenth International ANAMED Annual Symposium "Spolia Reincarnated: Second Life of Spaces, Materials, Objects in Anatolia from Antiquity to the Ottoman Period" held at Istanbul's Koç University Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations (ANAMED) in December 2015. This unique conference marked ANAMED's tenth anniversary and brought together many prominent scholars and former research center fellows, including the volume's editors.

New English Paperback. Large 8vo. (22 x 22 cm). In English and Turkish. 467, [1] p., color and b/w ills. A window to the west: The 150 years of the Galatasaray Lycee, 1868-2018.= Batiya açilan pencere: Galatasaray Lisesi'nin 150 yili, 1868-2018. Coord. by Zeynep Ögel, Gülru Tanman. Includes 11 articles on the history of the school which gave an education in French. The Galata Sarayi, registered in Istanbul's records from the end of the 15th century onwards as a palace school; is the city¿s only non-religious institution that has survived unchanged until the present day. Beginning with its founding myth based on the meeting of Bayezid II and Gul Baba, the building complex bore the very same name, and in time lent it to the neighbourhood evolving around it as well. The Galata Sarayi complex, which is used to train qualified personnel to the Ottoman Palace and Army throughout its history, became a pioneering military school; offering elementary-grade, and medical education. It hosted innovative developments such as a French curriculum and Western standards in education after the mid-19th century. The Mekteb-i Sultani (Lycee Imperial Ottoman da Galata Serai), took shape as a professional European middle-school; through the close relations between Abdulaziz and the French Emperor Napoleon III, in a series of efforts formulated by Ali Pasha and Fuad Pasha, two influential Ottoman statesmen of the time. One of the first secular institutions, offering equal rights of education to the diverse peoples of the Ottoman Empire, Galatasaray saw considerable interest after opening and formed a new tradition of education after its first class graduated in 1871. In the last 150 years; as the Mekteb-i Sultani in the final Ottoman years and as the Galatasaray High School from 1923 onwards despite varying successes - the school became a symbolic institution and an elite identity for its students and alumni alike. Designed to share the inspiring memory of this public institution; the exhibit thus presents glimpses from the school¿s efforts, since 1868, to train skilled, qualified individuals. Edited by curator Izzeddin Calislar the exhibition catalogue consists articles that give a unique insight to Galatasaray High School by Emel Engin, Fethi Isfendiyaroglu, Seza Sinanlar Uslu, Gulsun Guvenli Vahdettin Engin, Koksal Bayraktar, Yildizhan Yayla, Tarkan Okcuoglu, Melih Sabanoglu and Izzeddin Calislar.

(Turkey and its around map printed originally in early 18th century), descriptive text surrounding the map, size 65x85 cm. Cornelius Loos in the Ottoman world: Drawings for the King of Sweden, 1710-1711. [with] Panoramas & map [book]. Prep. by Lâle Uluç, David Jones, Klas Kronberg, Ersu Pekin. 2 volumes. [BOXED]. Cornelius Loos was one of the young military officers who followed Karl XII to the Ottoman Empire in 1709. From the royal headquarters in what is at present the republic of Moldova, Loos was sent to Istanbul on the King's orders in 1710. From there his journey was pursued by boat over the Mediterranean to Egypt and he returned by land through Jerusalem, Damascus, Aleppo, Konya and Izmir. Loos' mission was to make drawings of the "rarities and monuments" that he would encounter on his journey. Out of the drawings that have survived until today, one is from Palmyra, two from Rhodes and Bodrum and around forty aquarelle tush drawings from Istanbul. It is possible that part of the original drawings were destroyed in the "Skirmish at Bender" in 1713, while other works, due to various reasons, disappeared on their way to Sweden. The conserved drawings are kept at the Swedish National Museum and were exhibited there in 1985. (See catalogue titled "Cornelius Loos. Teckningar från en expedition till Främre Orienten 1719-1711", Stockholm, Nationalmuseum, 1985). The drawings represent a unique record of the urban landscape and the monuments in Istanbul in the early 18th century. The collection includes three great panoramas of the city seen from the Topkapi palace to the upper part of the Golden Horn. To the Loos paintings can be added the great Mecca painting brought to Sweden by Mikael Eneman and kept in the Uppsala University Library, and a small group of oil paintings brought back by Loos' travel companion Conrad Sparre, which are also kept in the art collection of Uppsala University. In addition there are travel accounts and correspondence from these journeys. (From the 'SRII's official site, Karin Adahl's project). "In January 1710 the Swedish king Charles XII, in exile in the Ottoman Empire, sent three of his officers on a journey from the royal camp near Bender in Moldova to travel to Constantinople and from there along the Eastern Mediterranean to Egypt. Their mission was 'to view the there existing rarities and monuments, to draw and to measure'. Cornelius Loos, one of the young officers, returned to his king in 1711 with more than 250 drawings. Only forty-nine, kept under the king's bed, survived a skirmish in the camp in 1713, the so called 'kalabalik' at Bender. King Charles had a vision to publish an encyclopaedic work about the Near East, a dream that was lost in the fire in the camp. The drawings were brought to Sweden when the king returned from the Ottoman Empire in 1714. He died in battle in Norway in 1718. Loos' drawings are unique documents of Constanttinople in the early 18th century, with large scale, detailed panoramas, important prospects of the interior of the Hagia Sophia and views from the Ottoman city. A big map is accompanied by minor drawings from the Black Sea, the Eastern Mediterranean and Egypt, as well as a spectacular set of water-colours of head dresses from the Ottoman world. The Loos collection of drawings is today kept in the National Museum in Stockholm.". Texts by Göran Baarnhielm, Ulla Ehrensvard, Nurhan Atasoy, Günsel Renda, Bo Lundstörm

The Sultan's procession: The Swedish embassy to Sultan Mehmed IV in 1657-1658 and the Rålamb paintings.
New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (30 x 24 cm). In English. 343 p., color and b/w ills. The Sultan's procession: The Swedish embassy to Sultan Mehmed IV in 1657-1658 and the Rålamb paintings. In 1657, King Charles X Gustaf of Sweden sent Claes Ralamb as an envoy to Sultan Mehmed IV's court. While he was there, Ralamb commissioned 20 large paintings in oil on canvas, depicting an imperial procession through Istanbul in September 1657, providing a revealing insight into the court of Sultan Mehmed IV in Ottoman Turkey. For the first time, Ralamb's paintings are published here in "The Sultan's Procession". This beautifully illustrated book - containing over 150 colour illustrations - comprehensively covers the full history of the paintings, including a technical analysis from the conservation of one of the paintings. The book also provides a full history of Claes Ralamb and his mission, including the political background of the Swedish embassy, Ralamb's biography and English translations of primary sources in Swedish and Turkish archives. Among the illustrations are over 100 watercolours of people in the Ottoman society from the costume album acquired by Ralamb in Istanbul. These unique Ralamb paintings provide a rare window into life at the Ottoman court in the 17th century.

First book in the trilogy of the Ottoman Posts in Palestine covering the Ottoman Field Post Offices in Palestine during the First VVorld War, based on the gold medal winning 'The Alexander Collection' was published in 2000. Following years of meticulous research and additional rare material made it possible for us to publish the second book of the series again based on The Alexander Collection covering the Civil Post Offices in Jerusalem from 1840 to 1918 when the Ottoman rule ended in Palestine. The book tells the story of communication under the Ottoman rule commencing with the earliest known letter recorded from Jerusalem to the latest recorded letter. it also includes several unique letters and postcards within the Holy Land. We are planning to publish the last book in the trilogy covering civil post offices in other parts of the Palestine in the very near future.

Restoration and Conservation Project of Urartian Jewellery Collection of Rezan Has Museum.= Rezan Has Müzesi Urartu Takilari Restorasyon ve Konservasyon Projesi.
New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (30 x 25 cm). In English and Turkish. 100 p., color ills. Jewelleries such as pectorals (breastplate), medallions, beads, amulets, neck rings, ornamental pins, fibulae, armlets, bracelets, rings and furthermore, the most comprehensive Urartian belt collection of Turkey with approximately 70 belts will reveal the mysterious thoughts, religious beliefs and traditions of the Urartian society. Among the most important factors in the development of the Urartian art of jewellery is the presence of rich mineral deposits of Eastern Anatolia and the profitable use of these deposits by the Urartian jewellery masters. Gold, silver, lead, iron and particularly copper deposits in the region were effectively mined for the first time by the Urartians. With the mission and vision it has upheld since its inauguration, Rezan Has Museum has arduously strived to preserve the historic assets of our land, which has been home to countless civilizations, and to ensure that they are transmitted to future generations. Our most important mission is to safeguard the Museum's jewellery collection of the Urartian civilization, which reigned over Anatolia for 250 years and to entrust future generations with a collection preserved at least its present condition. Each new study on these treasures to be handed down from one generation to the next will shed light not only upon our past but upon our future as well.".

Sivas with its Armenian cultural heritage.= Ermeni kültür varliklariyla Sivas.
New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (31 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 163 p., ills. Sivas with its Armenian cultural heritage.= Ermeni kültür varliklariyla Sivas. In tracing the roots of the Armenian community, this book reveals the multicultural heritage of Sivas. Located in the heart Anatolia, Sivas extends over a vast geography with subregions that are different yet complete each other and can only be fully understood in the context of multicultural heritage. The content of this book is comprised of the results of research conducted about Sivas by the Hrant Dink Foundation. We hope that the information presented here interests not only researchers and history enthusiasts, but anyone who wants to learn more about Sivas. Sivas is a land that reaches to the Black Sea in the north, as far as Aleppo to the south, the Euphrates in the east and Cappadocia to the west. The vast geography creates particularities in the regions, and to each of these we have tried to give attention. In order to understand Sivas, one needs to go from Susehri to Gürün, from Ulas to Sarkisla, to consider Hafik and Zara separately; the towns of these dispersed regions, Çepni of Gemerek and Mancilik of Kangal should be taken as distinct places, and each of the villages of Divrigi should be studied thoroughly by themselves. In presenting our findings, we also mention the challenges we had and the impressions we gained during the research process of the cultural heritage that is faced by the threat of being forgotten. By this we aim to contribute to the methodological discussions used in researching similar topics.
