International Symposium on Börklüce Mustafa: Proceedings. Börklüce Mustafa was one of the principal disciples of Sheikh Bedreddin. He lived around the turn of the 14th/15th centuries, and preached a system that can be compared to modern Communism. Between 1415-1416 he gathered Turkmen peasants, Greek sailors and Jewish merchants on the Karaburun peninsula in order to rebel against high taxes and other injustices. Börklüce Mustafa's life is relatively obscure, and well into the 20th century scarcely covered by scholarship, except in the context of his mentor, Sheikh Bedreddin. The main primary account on his activities is that of the Byzantine historian Doukas, along with a few scattered references in other sources. As a result, not even his name is certain, "Börklüce Mustafa" being but one of the suggested original names for Doukas' Hellenized rendering ?????????? ????????. According to different sources he gathered around 4.000-10.000 people. In the beginning of the rebellion Iskender Pasha tried to crush the revolt, but he couldn't because of the narrow alleys of the Karaburun peninsula. The people of Karaburun managed to crush the army of Iskender Pasa. After this more Turkmen Muslims and Christians joined the rebellion. After the defeat Mehmed sent Timurtas Pashazade Ali Bey with all the troops of the Saruhan province and Aydin to Karaburun. These troops were also defeated by the peasants. In the midst of the daily toil for food and shelter, the struggle for survival and their daily bread, in indescribably harsh conditions, the Turkish-speaking Anatolian refugees penned poetry whose inner depths portray it all. The death of loved ones during the flight from their native lands, tuberculosis, typhoid and malaria that wiped out many people sheltering in the swamplands, the hunger, the search for shelter, land and a day's wages; the inability of the ill-prepared Greek state to deal with such misery, the political conflicts and passions they observe in bewilderment, ignorant of politicized life; the savage exploitation of the poor and the persecuted by the wealthy opportunist, the daily confrontations and the fierce clashes with the natives over the sharing of the paltry resources, the scurrilous attacks, the local community's suspicion and scornful behaviour towards the refugee, made manifold in the case of the Turkish-speaking refugee. The collection and publication of these unknown Karamanlidika verses on refugeeism is first and foremost a tribute to their memory.

"The book includes the most important Antioch mosaic pavements displayed in the Hatay Archaeological Museum in Antakya, Turkey, seventeen different institutions in the USA and the Louvre. The mosaics were brought to light in and around Antioch on the Orontes (Antakya), Seleucia Pieria (Çevlik) and Daphne (Defne) in 1932-37. As a group, the Antioch mosaics demonstrate a remarkable continuity with the Hellenistic artistic tradition as seen in the preservation of classical subjects and decorative devices, such as the illusionistic treatment of the inhabited vine scrolls or ribbon borders. The common use of multiple borders to frame figural panels at Antioch is also reminiscent of the framing of Hellenistic emble-mata, or portable panels prepared in workshops and then inserted at the sites. The three-dimensional treatment of interiors and landscapes, the naturalistic representation of the human anatomy, and the variety of colors employed for the Antiochene compositions, indicate a dependence on painting styles. Such skill in the production of stone 'paintings' effectively denies the solidity of the floor and tricks the eye of the viewer, not to mention their physical relationship to the room itself. Finds from nearby sites (Apamea, Zeugma, Shahba-Philippopolis, and Palmyra) are similarly 'traditional' and point to the existence of a 'school' of eastern art beyond that of the Antiochene workshops. Such illusionism reaches the height of fashion during the Severan period in Antioch.".

Even if they are far from giving the development of the art of mosaic in the capital these pavements reflect the importance that was afforded to this art. In this volume they are grouped under the name of the monument to which they belong. Constantinople suffered so many natural disasters and had to be rebuilt so many times that the mosaics which decorated the buildings of the late Roman/early Byzantine period, lie under modern buildings in the debris of fires and earthquakes. Unless some of these are encountered accidentally during construction work and salvaged, there is almost no hope of bringing them to light.".

The excavations have shown that in the whole area there was not a single better-class house without mosaic pavements decorating its entrance, halls, dining rooms, corridors and sometimes the bottoms of its pools. In addition to pavements which came from structures built in different periods, mosaics which came from the different levels of the same buildings have enabled scholars to construct a gradual and unbroken development of classical Roman mosaics covering its iconographic and stylistic changes from the first century of the Common Era to the beginning of the sixth.".

In revolutionary Paris d'Ohsson published in 1789 what is maybe the best description of the social history of the Ottoman Empire, Tableau General de I'Empire Othoman. The most renowned artists of pre-revolutionary France then executed the gravures in Paris. Some motifs, reproduced also in this present book, still remain quite unique. Although d'Ohsson was a Sultan's subject of French-Armenian origin, Sweden's King Gustav III made him a Swedish nobleman and trusted him to be his ambassador to the Sublime Porte. Mouradgea d'Ohsson thus performed an extraordinary journey, not only through the social classes of Ottoman society, but between civilizations.
