Arzawa in the second half of the 2nd millennium BC (roughly from late 15th century until the beginning of the 12th century) was the name of a region and a political entity (a "kingdom" or a federation of local powers) in Western Anatolia. The core of Arzawa is believed to have been located along the Kestros River (Küçük Menderes), with its capital at Apasa, later known as Ephesus. When the Hittites conquered Arzawa it was divided into three Hittite provinces: a southern province called Mira along the Maeander River, which would later become known as Caria; a northern province called the Seha River Land, along the Gediz River, which would later become known as Lydia; and an eastern province called Hapalla. It was the successor state of the Assuwa league, which also included parts of western Anatolia, but was conquered by the Hittites in c. 1400. Arzawa was the western neighbour and rival of the Middle and New Hittite Kingdoms. On the other hand it was inclose contact with the Ahhiyawa of the Hittite texts, which corresponds to the Achaeans of Mycenaean Greece. Moreover, Achaeans and Arzawa formed a coalition against the Hittites, in various periods.

Rare. Sudda was Italian rooted, Istanbul-born Ottoman pharmacist. He is the pioneer of modern pharmacy in Turkey. He was son of Francesco Della Suda who was a pharmacist and owner a pharmacy called 'Grand Pharmacie della Suda' on the Grand Rue de Pera (Istiklal Caddesi). He completed his primary and secondary education in Saint Benoit French School in Bebek in Istanbul. At age sixteen he went to France for higher education. In 1855 he graduated from Paris School of Pharmacy. He worked on chemical analysis in France for a while. When he returned to Istanbul, he was brought to fen-i ispenciyari (pharmacy) and chemistry teacher in Mekteb-i Tibbiye-i Sahane (Military Medicine) and continued this duty for 40 years. In 1887, he rose to the highest rank of the ferik (lieutenant general) rank, the highest rank that military pharmacists could ever take. He became Harbiye Nezareti Ecza Deposu directorate and pharmaceutical inspector. He was honored with the engagement of Légion d'honneur thanks to the collections of drug and opium that he sent to the 1867 2nd Paris World Exhibition. He was one of founders of Cemiyet-i Tibbiye-i Sahane, Istanbul Eczacilar Cemiyeti ve Osmanli Hilal-i Ahmer Cemiyeti (later the Red Crescent Society - Kizilay Dernegi -). He has been an executive of these organizations for many years. This rare study of Sudda is related to banking accounting.

Die vorliegende Arbeit basiert auf der im Fruhjahr 1997 an der Fakultät fur Raumplanung und Architektur der Technischen Universität Wien vorgelegten Dissertation der Verfasserin. Im Zuge der Bearbeitung wurden jedoch einige Abschnitte der ursprunglichen Fassung zusammen-gefasst oder gänzlich weggelassen, sowie die Literaturangaben zum Teil aktualisiert gemäß dem Vorschlag des AKMED-Forschungsinstituts wurde die Arbeit ins Turkische ubersetzt und wird zweisprachig vorgelegt, was zu einem besonderen und zusätzlichen Ziel geworden ist. Wie bei jeder Arbeit dieser Komplexität, waren auch hier zahlreiche Fachleute, Institutionen und Wegbegleiter beteiligt, ohne deren Unterstutzung es mir nicht moglich gewesen wäre, die Erforschung dieses faszinierenden Gebäudes zu verwirklichen.

Some areas of art history have been overlooked in comparison to others, attracted less attention, and for this reason been the subject of less research and evaluation. Such situations are observed in particular where one branch or period of art in a country is so prominent as to overshadow its neighbours and counterparts. These neglected areas often deserve far more interest than circumstances grant them. Moreover, the bright light cast by their more famous cousins makes it harder, or even sometimes impossible, to do them justice and gain a true understanding of their qualities. A striking example of this phenomenon in Ottoman art is Kutahya ceramics, which have remained relatively unnoticed with the spotlight of attention focused on Iznik. When speaking of Ottoman ceramics it is first of all those of Iznik that spring to mind today, and this was no less true in the past. Kutahya pottery, like that of Canakkale, has been left to straggle far behind. Yet even a little examination reveals that although in comparison with these splendid 'court art' of Iznik, the pottery of Kutahya is regarded as provincial in character, and that of Canakkale as 'folk art', both these traditions are marked by lively originality and creativity. This book has been designed to throw new light on one of these overshadowed areas, the richly endowed world of Kutahya ceramics. In a region where pottery has been produced without interruption through the Phrygian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman and modern periods, Kutahya's long history of pottery production - its development, materials, workshops and craftsmen - has now been re-examined in new depth. The book "Sultan's Jewelers in the Ottoman Palace" primarily sheds light on the 19th century administrative and cultural history of the Ottoman Empire during a period of significant transition. The information obtained from the records of the "Jewelers Chamber" situated in the core of the Imperial Mint, over a period of 17 years ( A.H. 1270-1287 / A.D. 1853-1871) while the institution was under the management of the Ottoman Armenian family Duz and the reigns of Sultans Abdulmejid and Abdulaziz presents us with an invaluable treasure of information, the like of which has not been seen before. The records in the registers of the Imperial Mint Jewelers Chamber basically relate to the craft performed in the shop, but at the same time reveal very important historical facts. The information that gats accentuated are the specifics regarding the types, nature and cost of the orders and medals awarded to the military and civilian dignitaries honored by the Sultan. Also from the type and cost of the gifts shipped to Kaaba, to custom made jewelry for the Imperial Harem, from repairs made to worn out objects, to the type of jewelry the crown princes preferred to wear, the extravagance of certain crown princes mothers, to the type and value of items crafted for people with or without rank and certain other data which are now completely out of our reach are found in these records. In these records, taking the circumstances of the period as a basis, we also learn a lot about the jewelers terminology used in mid 19th century, names and costs of medals and orders employed in the Empire, details of precious gifts delivered to kings, queens and dignitaries of great nations giving direction to the era s politics and economy, information on goods imported from abroad or manufactured at the Imperial Mint only to be used at dinner parties and now lost in history, as well as the names of masters outside the Imperial Mint, names of articles and furnishings used at dinner parties given at Neshad-abad and Feriye Palaces, and other diverse data reflecting the spirit of the Tanzimat era, somewhat related to the activities of the Jewelers Chambers but which have not found their way into official documents.
