KATE FLEET.
Erken Osmanli döneminde Türk - Ceneviz ticareti. Translation: Özkan Akpinar.
New English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. Mint. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Turkish. European and Islamic trade in the early Ottoman state: The merchants of Genoa and Turkey: International trade was of great importance for the Ottomans in the construction of their empire. Kate Fleet's book examines the trade links which existed between European merchants and their Muslim counterparts from the beginnings of the Ottoman empire in 1300 to the fall of Constantinople in 1453. By using previously unexploited Latin and Turkish sources, and by focusing on the trading partnership between the Genoese and the Turks, she demonstrates how this interaction contributed to the economic development of the early Ottoman state and, indeed, to Ottoman territorial expansion. Where other studies have emphasized the military prowess of the early Ottoman state and its role as 'the infidel enemy', the book offers an insight into its economic aspirations and eventual integration into the economy of the Mediterranean basin. This is a readable, authoritative and innovative study which illuminates our understanding of an obscure period in early Ottoman history.

Das Islamische Iznik. Mit einem Quellenkundlichen Beitrag von Robert Anhegger.
Very Good English In very aesthetic modern cloth bdg. 4to. (28 x 21 cm). In German. [xvi], 209, [52] p., 52 p. numerous b/w plates.

[ACCOUNT OF THE OTTOMAN-VENETIAN NAVAL WAR] Tuhfetu'l-kibâr fî esfâri'l-bihâr. [i.e. The gift to the great ones on naval campaigns].
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Full leather new bdg. Original illustrated cover saved inside. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). [12], 166, [2] p., b/w and color plates of Ottoman warships and scenes from naval wars, seven maps of the earliest examples of Ottoman cartography. Very rare second edition of this book on the history of Ottoman naval wars against Venetians began with the Crete campaign (War of Candia) in 1645 and lasted for years until 1656. The book was published first in 1729 in Müteferrika Printing House which was the first printing house in the Islamic world as the third printed book. This is the second edition including five maps of almost the same size (two paged) titled world map, The Mediterranean, The Archipelago (Aegean), The Adriatic Sea, and the compass-like in its first edition as well as two maps and twenty-six plates (some of them are color) and small illustrations of Ottoman ships as head of some carriage returns. Additional maps depict the city of Venice (from Kitab-i Bahriye [i.e. Book of Navigation) and the travels of Ottoman Admiral Sidi Ali Reis through the Sea of Oman. The Cretan War or the Fifth Ottoman-Venetian War, was a conflict between the Republic of Venice and her allies (chief among them the Knights of Malta, the Papal States, and France) against the Ottoman Empire and the Barbary States because it was largely fought over the island of Crete, Venice's largest and richest overseas possession. This account of Ottoman maritime warfare in Turkish, written in Safer 1067/November 1656. This date places the book in a moment of utmost danger for the Ottoman capital following the defeat of the Ottoman navy at the hands of the Venetians at the Dardanelles (4 Ramadan 1066/26 June 1656) and the subsequent loss of the islands of Lemnos and Tenedos. It is also written shortly after the appointment of Köprülü Mehmed Pasha as grand vizier (25 Dhulqada 1066/14 September 1656). Thus it is suggested to read it as a program of reform of the navy intended for a person whom Hadji Khalfa might have seen as the "man of the sword" who might revert the fate of the Empire. Of the four ulemâ [i.e. scholars] who wrote endorsements for the book, two are closely related to the Köprülü family. The first part is a history of Ottoman maritime campaigns from the beginning to 1067/1656, while the second is a systematic description of naval affairs, from administration and offices to shipbuilding, culminating in a list of 40 suggestions for the organization and strategy of the Ottoman navy, including the use of recent scientific and technological innovations. Thus the juxtaposition with history provides an argument for reform. Suggestions are largely centered around the traditional qanun-i qadim; there is no reference to high-board ships. The final pages include an important discussion of historical causality, explaining how divine omnipotence creates the consequence of historical causes, in reward for the righteous rule, or punishment of injustice. Katip Çelebi [Katib Çelebi, Hadji Khalfa].
Kesfu'z-zunun an esami'l-kutubi ve'l-fünun. [Kitaplarin ve ilimlerin isimlerinden süphelerin giderilmesi]. 5 volumes set.
New English Kesfu'z Zunun an Esami'l-Kutubi ve'l - Funun [Kitaplarin ve Ilimlerin Isimlerinden Suphelerin Giderilmesi] I - II - III - IV - V [5 volumes set]., Katip Celebi, translator: Rustu Balci, Tarih vakfi yurt yayinlari, Ist., 2007. Paperback. Mint. 4to. (27.5 x 20 cm). In total 2160 p. "Kashf az-zunun an asami l-kutub wa l-funun: Katib Celebi¿s bibliographical dictionary, written in Arabic. It represents a unique achievement in that, after a general introduction which to a large extent depends on Ibn Khaldun¿s Muqaddima, it consists of one continuous alphabetic sequence of ca. 14.500 book titles and 300 names of sciences. With the latter Katib Celebi is taking Ta¿köprüzade¿s (d. 968/1561) Miftah al-saada as his model. In every entry for a book Katib Celebi noted, wherever possible, the title, the language, the name of the author and the date of composition, the incipit, the division into chapters (the presence of which can be taken as an indication that he had actually seen the book), as well as translations and commentaries (as cross references). Entries on sciences were also intended to include a list of relevant book titles as cross references, but these are often missing. In certain instances entries also include criticism of the book or the author. The scope of the work covers Arabic, Persian, and Turkish literature, with a few references to Greek texts. While the book is still appreciated as a reference, its potential as a source for 11th/17th century intellectual history, in particular in the definition of a literary and scholarly canon, has not yet been explored. The way in which Katip Celebi managed to arrange this mass of material is still not entirely clear. Birnbaum has argued that he must have used a system of index cards as the basis of the work. Preserved is an autograph of a partial fine copy, ending with article ¿¿durus¿. According to a note in Mizanü¿l-haqq, the fine copy had reached the letter ha in 1063/1652. For the rest, the author¿s draft with numerous marginal additions and annotations has been preserved. Whereas early editions and an edition-cum-translation are based on individual manuscripts, the autograph has been used as the basis of the edition by Bilge and Yaltkaya. In addition to a short continuation by Hanifzade Ahmed Tahir (d. 1217/1802), entitled Hadis-i nev, a larger one was authored by Bagdadli Ismail Pascha (d. 1339/1920), together with an index of authors.".

Kaya Genç
The Lion and the Nightingale
8vo, haedcover in dj. Turkey is a land torn between East and West, and between its glorious past and a dangerous, unpredictable future. After the violence of an attempted military coup against President Erdogan in 2016, an event which shocked the world, journalist and novelist Kaya Genc travelled around his country on a quest to find the places and people in whom the contrasts of Turkey's rich past meet. As suicide bombers attack Istanbul, and journalists and teachers are imprisoned, he walks the streets of the famous Ottoman neighbourhoods, telling the stories of the ordinary Turks who live among the contradictions and conflicts of Anatolia, one of the world's oldest civilizations. The Lion and the Nightingale presents the spellbinding story of a country whose history has been split between East and West, between violence and beauty - between the roar of the lion and the song of the nightingale. Weaving together a mixture of memoir, interview and his own autobiography, Genc takes the reader on a contemporary journey through the contradictory soul of the Turkish nation.

"Much has been written about the workshop structure and the role of the Sultan, Emperor or Emir in commissioning works of painting or architecture in the history of Islamic art and contradiction to the ideas of the last two centuries in the West, where the individual artist is credited with making a conceptual statement while working alone. The reality presented here is somewhere in the middle - individual poets, artists and architects play a prominent role historically in Islamic art while the position off the Ruler is also extremely valuable and stylistically relevant. The movement of artists and architects to cities that are centers of a particular style, movement or patronage was common throughout history and the interchange in Ottoman and Safavid-Persian and Mughal and Deccani India are examples of methods and techniques spreading, developing, influencing and changing regional trends. In this study, selected paintings, buildings andd films that cross genres, styles and dynastic periods are explored in both a socio-historical context and, more importantly, in terms of their striking formal innovations. It is a thematic new look at how we position Islamic art - how it in fact embodies, exemplifies and invents many aspects of Modernism in Painting and Architecture and Film.".

KAZIM KARABEKIR, (The commander of the Eastern Army of the Ottoman Empire at the end of World War I and served as Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey), (1882-1948).
Typescript letter signed 'K. Karabekir' to Nevzad Ayas.
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original typescript letter signed (TLS) by Kâzim Karabekir to Nevzat Ayas [Abdullatif Nevzad Ayasbeyoglu], (1889-1966), who was an important Turkish politician. 21x15 cm. In Turkish (Modern) with Latin letters. 1 p. [in four]. 'Sevgili Bay Nevzad Ayas, Yazilarinizi ilgili iç makama bildirmemizi uygun görürüm. Sevgilerimle gözlerinizden öperim, K. Karabekir'. "The Grand National Assembly of Turkey Presidency - Special" letterhead. The letter has five typescript lines with autograph signature of Karabekir. Musa Kâzim Karabekir was a Turkish general and politician. He was the commander of the Eastern Army of the Ottoman Empire at the end of World War I and served as Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey before his death. Karabekir was born in 1882 as the son of an Ottoman general, Mehmet Emin Pasha, in the Kocamustafapasa quarter of the Kuleli neighborhood of Constantinople, Ottoman Empire. The Karabekir family traced its heritage back to the medieval Karamanid principality in central Anatolia. Karabekir toured several places in the Ottoman Empire while his father served in the army. He returned to Istanbul in 1893 with his mother after his father's death in Mecca. They settled in the Zeyrek quarter. Karabekir was put into Fatih military secondary school the next year. After finishing his education there, he attended the Kuleli Military High School, from which he graduated in 1899. He continued his education at the Ottoman Military College, which he finished on 6 December 1902 at the top of his class. As a junior officer, after two months he was commissioned in January 1906 to the Third Army in the region around Bitola in North Macedonia. There, he was involved in fights with Greek and Bulgarian komitadjis. For his successful service, he was promoted to the rank of Senior Captain in 1907. In the following years, he served in Constantinople and again in the Second Army in Edirne. During his service in Edirne, Karabekir was promoted to the rank of major on 27 April 1912. He took part in the First Balkan War against Bulgarian forces, but was captured during the Battle of Edirne-Kale on 22 April 1913. He remained a POW until the armistice of 21 October 1913. Before the outbreak of World War I, Karabekir served for a while in Constantinople and was then sent to some European countries like Austria, Germany, France and Switzerland. In July 1914, he returned home, as a world war was likely. He was commissioned to the Iraqi front to join the Sixth Army. For his success at Gallipoli, he was decorated in December 1915 both by the Ottoman and German Command, and was contemporaneously promoted to colonel. In April 1916, he took over the command of the 18th Corps, which gained a great victory over the British forces led by General Charles Townshend during the Siege of Kut-al Amara in Iraq. Karabekir was appointed commander of the 2nd Corps on the Caucasian front and fought bitterly against the Russian and Armenian forces for almost ten months. In September 1917, he was promoted to brigadier general by a decree of the Sultan. In compliance with the Treaty of Sèvres, which ended World War I, Ottoman Sultan Mehmet Vahdettin gave Karabekir the order to surrender to Entente powers, which he refused to obey. He stayed in the region and, on the eve of the Erzurum Congress when Mustafa Kemal had just arrived in Erzurum, he secured the city with a Cavalry Brigade under his command to protect him and the congressmen. He pledged with Mustafa Kemal to join the Turkish national movement and subsequently took the command of the Eastern Front during the Turkish War of Independence by the Kuva-yi Milliye. Karabekir Pasha moved to Ankara in October 1922, and continued to serve in the parliament as Deputy of Edirne. He was still the acting commander of the Eastern Army when he was elected Deputy of Constantinople on 29 June 1923. Six months later, he was appointed Inspector of the First Army. Parliament awarded him the highest Turkish "Order of Inde

Beyond shelter: Anatolian indigenous buildings.
New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (26 x 26 cm). In English. 224 p., color ills. Beyond shelter: Anatolian indigenous buildings. Beyond Shelter presents visual records of various houses and settlements in the Aegean, Mediterranean, Central, Eastern, and Black Sea regions of Anatolia. It explains the languages of the building patterns found, and also displays the ingenuity of the indigenous builders. While focusing on the relationships between climate, locality, materials and skills, Kemal Aran shows the reader the differentiation of Anatolia's characteristic patterns. Dramatic expressions in the unity of details, textures, materials and colors also produce building variations that stem from the builders' initiative. The buildings depicted are unique examples that satisfy both the physical needs and the intellectual motives of people. As shown in Beyond Shelter, languages of building patterns establish communal identity including individual variety.

KEMAL EDIB [KÜRKÇÜOGLU], (Turkish poet), (1902-1977).
Unpublished autograph poem signed 'Bende-i Mevlânâ Kemal Edib'.
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original manuscript unpublished autograph poem signed by Kemal Edib. 20x14 cm. In Ottoman script. 18 verses. This unpublished poem by Kemal Edib is titled 'Su-yi tarih'. Dated only 1361 AH. Signed as 'Bende-i Mevlânâ Kemal Edib' [i.e. Slave to Mawlana Kemal Edib]. Mevlana is a title given to people who are seen as leaders in the religion of Islam or who are successful in Islamic sciences. Although it is frequently used by Islamic scholars and religious leaders especially in the Indian Subcontinent, it is not used much in West Asia. It is often used in Turkish and Persian literature to refer to Jalaluddin Rûmî and is therefore mistakenly understood as part of that person's name or as his own specific nickname or title. Derived from the word Mawla, this word means "our master". Although the Swahili language in Africa, like other languages, derives the word from its origin in Arabic, it uses it in a much more general sense: the word is generally given to people respected by their community and does not have to bear religious emphasis, it can be used in a secular context. In this signature, the poet might this title to refer to Rumi. Kemal Edip Kürkçüoglu, (1902-1977), who had taught history, literature, and Islamic mysticism in high schools and faculties and done administrative services, was a poet and scholar whose fifteen books about religion, history, and literature had been published. Only a few of his poems had been published until today. (Source: The Poem Of Kemal Edip Kürkçüoglu Eulogizing Jalâl Al-Dîn Al-Rûmî, by Emine Terzioglu).
