‎KEMAL H. KARPAT.‎

‎Elites and religion from Ottoman Empire to Turkish Republic.‎

‎Fine English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 282 p. "Professor Karpat, one of the most prominent names in the field of Political History, explores the social structure of Ottoman Empire through different eras and looks at Turkey's multi-party democracy culture from a historical perspective. His articles interpret the Ottoman history for broader audience and lay a vivid picture of events of recent history in front of our eyes. Professor Karpat's remarkable articles take us back to 18th century Ottoman days and examine change and modernization on those days, his work also looks into the independence and interaction of various social groups within a muslim state. The Ottoman social structure produced a unique way of practicing "secularism" where spiritual issues regarding faith and administrative issues regarding everyday state politics were kept completely independent from each other; one was dealing with earthly matters of day to day life of subjects of the Ottoman sultan, the other was to aid the followers of specific faith in their practice of religion and to prepare for after-life. Ottomans, despite having a highly complex social structure accommodating a number of ethnic groups and various religious orders, had successfully sustained freedom of faith by adopting the 'millet' system. Every non-muslim community represented by its leader was regarded as a 'millet' and enjoyed an absolute autonomy and freedom within its own faith and community in terms of practice of religion, language, social relations. During the Tanzimat era a new generation of religious leaders; who were relatively free from state regulations emerged among Ulema and unlike their predecessors they were not dignitaries. The social status of this newly emerging group from within well- established Ulema which was preoccupied at times to legitimise social and political change from an Islamic perspective or at other times tried to maintain status-quo siding with government, overlapped with the social image of the Ottoman middle-class. The fact that the new generation Ulema had common characteristics with ordinary middle-class people had a profound impact on Ottoman-Turkish political history. Consequently, the road map of 'modernity and secularism' set in Republican Turkey was identified by both the state represented by military and civilian bureaucrats and by people represented by local notables.".‎

‎La Casa Di Mio Padre‎

‎8vo; br., pp. 160, cm 14x21. (Raggi).

‎Turkish coffee. Translated by Mary Priscilla Isin.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Oblong 8vo. (15 x 16 cm). In English. Color and b/w ills. 272 p. Coffee has played an important part in Turkish life for 500 years. Although it originated in Ethiopia and was later introduced to Yemen in the Arabian peninsula, neither of these countries supply the world with coffee today. Both places are remembered only in accounts of coffee's history, which is interwoven with legend. For a long time the world coffee trade has been in the hands of international trading companies that purchase the raw or roasted beans from distant countries. Although tea has brought about a decrease in coffee drinking in Turkey, in recent years the arrival of international coffee brands and coffee house chains has sparked off a slow revival.‎

‎KEVORK V. TERZIBASYAN [GEORG W. TARZIBASHIAN], (Armenian cleric), (1862-1959).‎

‎[MYSTIC EASTERN POETRY AND FUZULI COMMENTARY BY AN ARMENIAN PRIEST] Nmuysh arevelian misdig panasdeghdzutyan gam Füzuli megnapanvadz (Masn Aratchin). [i.e. From the mystical poem of the song to the sample or Fuzûlî commentary].‎

‎Fine Armenian Full morocco. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). In Armenian together with samples in Ottoman Turkish (Turkish with Arabic letters), Latin, Italian. 451, [4] p. First and Only Edition. Fuzuli is a poet who has an important place among the poets of Classical Turkish Literature XVI Century. Fuzûlî, as in history, is one of the most widely read and known poets in the world today. Having a large number of Fuzuli's works copies in Turkey and the world library, this is one of the most important pieces of evidence of love and attention. One of the important indicators of this situation is that Terzibasyan compared the works of Fuzûlî with his contemporaries in the West and Armenian poets in his work titled Numûne or Fuzûlî Commentary from the Mystical Poem of the Song. One of the personalities we can regard as one of the important indicators of this love for Fuzûlî is Priest Kevork Terzibasyan. Terzibasyan's interest and love for Fuzûlî's works led him to devote his life to Fuzûlî. Terzibasyan wrote a 3-volume book in Western Armenian. The first volume of the work was published in 1928. The second volume was published in 1929 after the death of Terzibasyan. These works were written in Western Armenian, and today there are only the first and second volumes. There are different claims about the third volume of Terizbasyan's book. This work of Terzibasyan is important in terms of showing how the poet Fuzûlî was interpreted from an Armenian pen. It is also important in terms of revealing similar and different aspects of Fuzûlî's contemporaries. From this point of view, it is possible to say that in the book of Terzibasyan, Fuzûlî is frequently emphasized that he is at a different point than Western and Eastern poetry within the scope of Eastern and Western poetry. This work of Terzibasyan is important in terms of revealing why an Armenian pastor devoted 20 years of his life to Fuzûlî. This situation even caused Terzibasyan to be exposed to criticism within his own society. At this point, it is seen that there is a section titled "Salute to Mustafa Kemal Pasha" in the work of a priest who has devoted his life to Fuzûlî. The answer to the questions of why and how Terzibasyan made a connection between Fuzûlî and Mustafa Kemal Pasha reveals the importance of the text once again. In this study, firstly, brief information about who is Terzibasyan will be given. The fact that there is a separate title about Mustafa Kemal Pasha in this work and his common points with Fuzûlî indicates that Terzibasyan had a great admiration and respect for Atatürk. Another point that draws attention in this work is that Terzibasyan compared Atatürk to poets and writers worldwide, the specially Italian poet Dante. It is possible to say that these similarities are rather related to the power and influence Atatürk had on his society. Terzibasyan as a cleric believes that future generations will only have the power to reconcile their values with the West by learning the past values. For this reason, in his work, he deals extensively with the effects of Fuzûlî on world poets and his reflections in the world of poetry, similar and different aspects of poets in the West and East. According to Terzibasyan, the only way for future generations to grasp this literary world is to learn the works of historical figures comprehensively. Terzibasyan believes that in such a way, new literature from Eastern literature will sprout. (Source: Mustafa Kemal Pasha in the Work of Kevork Terzibasyan named the Sample or Fuzuli Commentary from the Mystical Poem of the Orient, by Bozkus). This book is not translated into any language. Refii Cevat Ulunay, (1890-1968)'s article in 1968 stating that the book should be translated into Turkish was published in the literary journals of the period. Terzibashian (Gevorg Gerapaytzar Terzibasyan), (1862-1959), was born in Ankara city. Terzibasyan, who completed his primary education in Ankara, was noticed as a brilliant student during his... ‎KHEDIVE ABBAS HILMI PASHA II of EGYPT, (The last Khedive (Ottoman viceroy) of Egypt and Sudan, ruling from 8 January 1892 to 19 December 1914), (1874-1944).‎

‎[FINE ALS / ROYALTY / KHEDIVE] Autograph letter signed 'Abbas Hilmi'.‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original autograph manuscript letter signed by Khedive Abbas Hilmi Pasha II of Egypt. 20,5x16,5 cm. In Ottoman script. 1 p. 6 lines. Sent to an unknown recipient who he called 'Efendim hazretleri' in elqab of the letter. He mentions that he received a telegraph of the recipient. He celebrated 'eid' ('Iyd-i said'). Abbas II Helmy Bey, was the last Khedive (Ottoman viceroy) of Egypt and Sudan, ruling from 8 January 1892 to 19 December 1914. In 1914, after the Ottoman Empire joined the Central Powers in World War I, the nationalist Khedive was removed by the British, then ruling Egypt, in favor of his more pro-British uncle, Hussein Kamel, marking the de jure end of Egypt's four-century era as a province of the Ottoman Empire, which had begun in 1517. Abbas Hilmy, the great-great-grandson of Muhammad Ali, was born in Alexandria, Egypt on 14 July 1874.[4] He succeeded his father, Tewfik Pasha, as Khedive of Egypt and Sudan on 8 January 1892. In 1887 he was ceremonially circumcised together with his younger brother Mohammed Ali Tewfik. The festivities lasted for three weeks and were carried out under great pomp. As a boy, he visited the United Kingdom, and he had a number of British tutors in Cairo including a governess who taught him English.[5] In a profile of Abbas II, the boys' annual, Chums, gives a lengthy account of his education. His father established a small school near the Abdin Palace in Cairo where European, Arab and Ottoman masters taught Abbas and his brother Mohammed Ali Tewfik. An American officer in the Egyptian army took charge of his military training. He attended school at Lausanne, Switzerland; then, at the age of twelve, he was sent to the Haxius School in Geneva, in preparation for his entry into the Theresianum in Vienna. In addition to Arabic and Ottoman Turkish, he had good conversational knowledge of English, French, and German. He was still in college in Vienna when he assumed the throne of the Khedivate of Egypt upon the sudden death of his father, 8 January 1892. He was bare of age according to Egyptian law; normally, eighteen in cases of succession to the throne. For some time he did not cooperate very cordially with the British, whose army had occupied Egypt in 1882. As he was young and eager to exercise his new power, he resented the interference of the British Agent and Consul General in Cairo, Sir Evelyn Baring, later made Lord Cromer. At the outset of his reign, Khedive Abbas II surrounded himself with a coterie of European advisers who opposed the British occupation of Egypt and Sudan and encouraged the young khedive to challenge Cromer by replacing his ailing prime minister with an Egyptian nationalist. At Cromer's behest, Lord Rosebery, the British foreign secretary, sent Abbas II a letter stating that the Khedive was obliged to consult the British consul on such issues as cabinet appointments. In January 1894 Abbas II made an inspection tour of Sudanese and Egyptian frontier troops stationed near the southern border, the Mahdists being at the time still in control of Sudan itself. At Wadi Halfa the Khedive made public remarks disparaging the Egyptian army units commanded by British officers. The British commander of the Egyptian army, Sir Herbert Kitchener, immediately threatened to resign. Kitchener further insisted on the dismissal of a nationalist under-secretary of war appointed by Abbas II and that an apology be made for the Khedive's criticism of the army and its officers. By 1899 he had come to accept British counsels. Also in 1899 British diplomat, Alfred Mitchell-Innes was appointed Under-Secretary of State for Finance in Egypt, and in 1900 Abbas II paid a second visit to Britain, during which he said he thought the British had done good work in Egypt and declared himself ready to cooperate with the British officials administering Egypt and Sudan. He gave his formal approval for the establishment of a sound system of justice for Egyptian nationals, a great reduction in taxation...‎
