Turkish / Ottoman master calligraphers 1: Calligrapher Aziz Efendi, (1871-1934). He was born in Maçka in 1871. His family moved to Istanbul, the Ottoman capital during Russo-Turkish War (1877-78). Aziz Efendi completed his primary education in 1885 and started to learn calligraphy from Ahmed Arif Effendi of Plovdiv (known more commonly as "Bakkal" -the grocer-) and he also studied at Hat Mektebi (Calligraphy School). He graduated in 1894 and continued to practise under the supervision of Muhsinzade Abdullah Hamdi Efendi until 1896. In 1921, King Fuad of Egypt has invited him to Cairo, where he transcribed the Quran and gilded the result. After completing his mission, he remained in Egypt, where he worked as a teacher and contributed to the establishment of schools to improve Arabic fonts. He returned to Istanbul in 1932, where he died two years later. Two of his calligraphic panels are hanging in the Grand Mosque of Bursa, Turkey. He transcribed 11 copies of the Quran in his lifetime, a number of hilyas and other textual compilations. Lahej was a Sheikdom based in Lahej in Southern Arabia. The Sultanate became self-ruled in 1728 and gained independence in 1740. Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original manuscript autograph letter/document signed by Muhtar Halid sent to the presidency of the Republican Party of Turkey in Ankara. 20,5x13,5 cm. In Ottoman script. Dated September, 23, [1]928. Six lines. Two punching holes out of text on the paper. The document says that 26.000 alphabets, 57.000 brochures and pamphlets, and 100.000 (?) are printed and will be sent to the 'Cumhuriyet Halk Firkasi' [i.e. Republican Party] (CHF - CHP) in Ankara city. This rare autograph documents how widespread and comprehensive work was done to switch from Arabic letters to Latin letters during the Letter Revolution in 1928. "Muhtar Halid Kitabhanesi [i.e. Printing House of Muhtar Halid] was located on Bâb-i Alî [i.e. The Sublime Port] main street, number 17; a place where is located old Izmir Terzihanesi [i.e. Old Smyrna Taylor Shop]. Muhtar Halid was the Late period Ottoman / Turkish typographer, the elder brother of the famous Turkish typographer and translator of Ahmed Ihsan Tokgöz, (1868-1942), and the owner of 'Muhtar Halid Kitabhanesi'. He worked together with his brother's printing and publishing house, especially when he was publishing 'Servet-i Fün'un' periodicals. Servet-i Fünûn [i.e. The Wealth of Knowledge] was a long-running and an avant-garde literary and sometimes political periodical, and, journal or magazine. It's published to support the Ittihat ve Terakki Cemiyeti [i.e. The Union and Progress Society, later, Party] initially by Ahmed Ihsan Tokgöz. First, only, and early Turkish Edition of this extremely rare tractate on Jesuit instructions. There's a description on verso of imprint page like: "Memanat yoktur; J. B. Kosta J. T.'den 23 Kanun-u Sâni 1926'da tâb olunmustur"; means it's printed from [original title] 'J. B. Kosta J. T.' in 1926, January 23. 'J. B.' should be Jerusalem Bible. This note is written by A. Rota according to the descriptive continuing text, and it goes on as 'Hasmetlü Papa hazretleri Dersaadet vekili, 25 Mart 1927' means 'The Pope the Great, his majesty, Dersaadet (Constantinople) delegate; 1927, 25 March'. This tractate was translated from the early Jesuit Christian instructions according to the Paris bishopric during the 17th century. It's printed by Jesuit Monks' Church in Beyoglu, Ayazpasa, in Constantinople. Just one copy in Bogaziçi University Library in OCLC: 949501963. Not in Özege. Extremely rare book on Jesuit literature in Turkey.

(Zephyrion, Ingira, Aulai, Ankhiale, Kyinda-Kundi, Sizzu).= Verlorene Stadte an der küste Kilikiens von Mersin bis Tarsus. Während einer Reparaturarbeit an einem Wasserkanal in der dieser Gemeinde fand man im Meer Ringe zum Anbinden von Schiffen, die zu einem alten Hafen gehörten. Als diese Ringe aus dem Meer getragen wurden, befand ich mich zufällig dort und das trug dazu bei, meine ersten Schritte für diese Forschung zu machen. Denn dass sich dort früher ein Hafen befand, war zwar bekannt, es befand sich aber bis dahin noch keine Spur davon. Man begegnete bis dahin an der Küste diesbezüglich auch keinen archäologischen Befunden. Nach den Hinweisen, die auf einen Hafen deuteten, führten archäologische Befunde dazu, diese Gemeinde als Aulai zu lokalisieren. Diese Feststellung stellte sich anschließend eigentlich als Ausgangspunkt für andere Feststellungen heraus. Denn antike Quellen beschrieben die Lokalisation von Siedlungen, deren Lokalisation sich bis heute nicht konkret feststellen lie?en, mit dem Anhaltspunkt anderer Siedlungen, deren Lokalisation ebenfalls noch nicht festgestellt werden konnten. Nach dieser Phase der Forschung war eigentlich eine handfeste Stütze gefunden, mit der man Städte wie Zephyrion, Ingira, Aulai, Ankhiale, Kyinda, Kundi und Sizzu lokalisieren oder zumindest einen Lokalisationsvorschlag machen kann. These items, that were posted or kept by visitors, are assets of cultural heritage and hold anthropological value both for their own sake and for the thoughts and purposes attached to them. "Souvenir of Jerusalem" sheds light on this valuable legacy. The book contains reproductions of postcards, posters, and photographs of various objects that Mr. Murat Kargili had assembled in his personal collection and supplemented with annotations. The book came out in IRCICA s series of studies on al-Quds and Palestine. Earlier IRCICA published albums of historical photographs of al-Quds (Al-Quds/Jerusalem in historical photographs, 2009; Jerusalem in Historical Photographs From Past to Present, 2015) but this is the first publication to focus on postcards and artefacts. The first chapter of the book is reserved to postcards, with annotations on the quarters, structures and scenes of life. The second chapter contains a large variety of printed materials such as posters, trade cards, gravures and maps featuring a fascinating range of subjects and objects. The last chapter is devoted to souvenir objects acquired from Jerusalem. IRCICA is pleased to publish this album which mirrors Al-Quds of the late 19th early 20th centuries. The said album came out in a deluxe edition printed on archival-quality paper. It features more than 150 printed materials such as postcards, maps, engravings, posters, trade cards and pictures of souvenir objects which will take the reader on a journey to Al-Quds; this main sacred city that has seen the longest state rule in its history under Muslims administration.

Ammianus mentions Silifke and Claudiopolis as cities of Cilicia, or of the country drained by the Calycadnus; and Claudiopolis was a colony of Claudius Caesar. It is described by Theophanes of Byzantium as situated in a plain between the two Taurus Mountains, a description which exactly, corresponds to the position of the basin of the Calycadnus. Claudiopolis may therefore be represented by Mut, which is higher up the valley than Seleucia, and near the junction of the northern and western branches of the Calycadnus. It is also the place to which the pass over the northern Taurus leads from Laranda. Pliny (v. 24) mentions a Claudiopolis of Cappadocia, and Ptolemy (v. 7) has a Claudiopolis in Cataonia. Both these passages and those of Ammianus and Theophanes are cited to prove that there is a Claudiopolis in Cataonia, though it is manifest that the passage in Ammianus at least can only apply to a town in the valley of the Calycadnus in Cilicia Trachea. The two Tauri of Theophanes might mean the Taurus and Antitaurus. But Hierocles places Claudiopolis in Isauria, a description which cannot apply to the Claudiopolis(es) of Pliny and Ptolemy. The city apparently received the Roman colony name Colonia Iulia Felix Augusta Ninica, and minted coins in antiquity.
