‎Cilicia'da Yahudiler.‎

‎New Turkish Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Turkish. 192 p., b/w ills. Cilicia'da Yahudiler. Jews of Cilicia. In the historical process, Jews began to live outside of Iudaea because of various wars since the famous Babylonian exile, and thus the Jewish diaspora emerged. For this reason, in Jewish religious texts, clues can be followed in areas where Jews spread or in which they establish a commercial relationship - for example, Cilicia. For the Jews in the Old Age, Cilicia's land suitable for agriculture, its temperate structure similar to ludaea in terms of climate, its sea limiter, should be attractive to live. This book aims at examining Cilicia, a place of wild nature images in the past, and the ancient congregation of an ancient congregation that has a special place in history. Thus, the existence of Jews in Cilicia is being presented to readers with concrete data.‎

‎MUSA KÂZIM, (Naqshbandi Sheikh al-Islam of the Ottoman Empire), (1858-1920).‎

‎[6910 YEARS OF WORLD HISTORY THROUGH THE EYES OF AN OTTOMAN REFORMIST CLERIC] Muhtira-i ricâl ve siyâsîyyûn. [i.e. Memorandum of statesmen and poltics].‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original wrappers. Spine completely worn. Uncut and untrimmed pages. Overall a good copy. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 12 cm). In Ottoman script (Turkish with Arabic letters). 546 p. First and Only Edition of this book through the eyes of an Ottoman reformist Islamist cleric, on 6910 years of human history which Kazim says he personally accepts the five thousand years before Christ and uses Diruz, Levi and Buwayh as the main sources. In this work, 6910 years of historical events have been divided into four chapters. The first chapter starts with the creation of the realm and includes 4200 years of events. The second chapter includes events of eight hundred years, and the centuries and years of these numbers/dates will be followed, based on the history of when and when the events described in this section occurred. The third chapter is the milestones between the times of Jesus and Muhammad. It includes six hundred and twenty-two years between Muhammad's migration. The fourth chapter includes the events starting from the year when the Ottoman state emerged with the migration. This chapter covers six hundred and seventy-seven years. Musa Kazim supported the idea of social and political reforms provided these reforms were not against the basic Islamic principles. For instance, he advocated liberties and freedom that were within the context of Islamic laws. He defended the schooling of women but did not think they needed to obtain higher education. One of Musa Kazim's most argued thoughts is his support for the constitutional monarchy since he took constitutionalism as an inference of Islamic political understanding. He obviously judged absolutism as a non-Islamic establishment and praised constitutionalism, which also meant an appraisal for the 1908 revolution and the CUP rule. Similar to the other Islamists of the Constitutional Era, Musa Kazim had some apologetic ideas about the so-called conflict between religion and science, or the religion-civilization relationship. He refused the idea that Islam as a religion was an obstacle against the progress of humanity as Christianity was. He also defended Muslim society, saying that Islam helped Muslims create one of the highest civilizations of human history. ‎Francesco, i minori e la Terrasanta‎

‎8vo, br., pp. 380, cm 12x18. (Peregrinantes in mundo).

‎MUSTAFA (Authorized person of the Waqf), (Early 19th century).‎

‎[MUWAQQIT EFFENDY: TIMEKEEPING OF THE SPECIAL WATCH IN THE TOMB OF SULTAN MEHMET II] Historical manuscript document on the fee of a muwaqqit who was hired to set the special watch that Pertevniyal Kadin Efendi donated to the tomb of Fatih Sultan Mehmed Han.‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original historical autograph manuscript document sealed by the authorized person of the Pertevniyal Hanim Waqf on special paper. 32x18 cm. In Ottoman script. 6 lines with its annotated confirmation with red ink. 1 p. Historical manuscript document on about the muwaqqit who was hired to set the special watch that Pertevniyal Kadin Efendi donated to the tomb of Fatih Sultan Mehmed Han. Pertevniyal Sultan [i.e. "Descended from Radiance"], (1810-1884), was the thirteenth wife of Sultan Mahmud II, and Valide sultan to their son Sultan Abdulaziz of the Ottoman Empire. Pertevniyal exerted some influence over her son. When Abdulaziz took his trip to Europe, Pertevniyal was anxious about him the whole time he was away. On his way home he stopped at Ruse, Bulgaria, where Midhat was governor, with the intention of a month and acquainting himself with the Balkan country. But Pertevniyal, a possessive and short-sighted woman, wrote him to come home immediately. Sultan of Turkey though he was, he obeyed his mother's command. Pertevniyal contributed to the instability of her son's rule by meddling in affairs of state. Especially unwise was her alliance with Mahmud Nedim Pasha, the sycophantic grand vizier whose recklessness and incompetence led to further financial chaos. She founded the Pertevniyal High School as well as Pertevniyal Valide Sultan Mosque in 1872. In the days when the Hejaz was part of the Empire, the Porte tried to improve the health situation there. Pertevniyal, built hospitals in the Harem-i Sherif, and young Turkish doctors went out from Istanbul to man them. Pertevniyal Sultan was a great philanthropist, and thanks to her influence, she had the opportunity to make her son do whatever he wanted. In order to provide income to the foundations that it intends to establish, lands called Fasil fields. She commissioned a fountain in front of the Kâtib Mosque in October 1862, and then it was removed from the square and moved to the entrance door of the mosque on the grounds that it narrowed the road. She also built three fountains, one in Suboyu (Bige) village and two on Karaköy road in Sebinkarahisar. In 1864, she built a shipbuilding pool (stone loom) in Tersane to cover her own income, the first Ottoman battleship came out of this loom. "In the history of Islam, a muwaqqit was an astronomer tasked with the timekeeping and the regulation of prayer times in an Islamic institution like a mosque or a madrasa. Unlike the muezzin (reciter of the call to prayer) who was usually selected for his piety and voice, a muwaqqit was selected for his knowledge and skill in astronomy. The main duty of the muwaqqit was timekeeping and the regulation of daily prayer times in mosques, madrasas, or other institutions using astronomy and other exact sciences. At its zenith in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, major mosques often employed prominent astronomers as muwaqqits. In addition to regulating prayer times, they wrote treatises on astronomy, especially on timekeeping and the use of related instruments such as quadrants and sundials. They were also responsible for other religious matters related to their astronomical expertise, such as the keeping of the Islamic calendar and the determination of the qibla (the direction to Mecca used for prayers). ‎Sullamu al-wusûl ilâ tabaqât al-fuhûl.= The ladder of elevation to the lives of the great and famous by generation. 6 volumes set. Edited and Introduction by Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu in collaboration with Mahmoud al-Arnaut, Saleh Sadawi Saleh. Indices by Selahaddin Uygur.‎

‎New English Original bdg. Large roy. 8vo. (25 x 17 cm). In English and Arabic. 6 volumes set. The present book is a critical edition of the major biographical work Sullam al-Wusul by Katib Chalabi (d. 1657), one of the most important Ottoman scholars of the 17th century. His most well-known works are Kashf al-Zunun (bibliographical), Sullam al-Wusul (biographical), Fezleke (general Islamic history) and Cihannuma (geographical). The first cited, an outstanding bibliography in history of science, and the last cited, were published many times. Sullam al-Wusul was not published until today (Fezleke either). The book is arranged in two editions of 6 volumes each. The main body is in Arabic in both editions, whereby the comprehensive Introduction by Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu and the Preface by Dr. Halit Eren are provided in also English in one of the editions and also in Turkish in the other edition. The sixth volume altogether is the Index. Work towards this publication was conducted at the initiative and under the editorship and coordination of Prof. Ihsanoglu on the occasion of the 2009 Katib Chalabi Year proclaimed by UNESCO. It was conceived in the context of IRCICA's objective to publish major sources of culture and learning that are part of the Muslim world's heritage and render them available to researchers. In the comprehensive Introduction, Ihsanoglu explores some features of Islamic literature in the area of biography as observed over the centuries. Historians of the Muslim world wrote hundreds of books in every branch of biography: 'While some of these contained the biographies of scholars belonging to specific branches of science or to certain sects, others dealt with the life stories of statesmen, scholars and religious authorities who lived in specific places or specific periods of time. These kinds of biographies were usually arranged by category and by date. Another type of biographies contained information on important statesmen, scholars, religious figures, authors, artists, etc. having lived in history. This type of general biography was usually arranged alphabetically. Katib Chalabi is the leading, or one of the leading personality among those who produced general biographies.' This biography records the lives and works of important statesmen and scholars in Islamic history and also of renowned personalities from pre-Islamic times who held a place in learning and literature. In the second part of the book Katib Chalabi gives information about the personalities' names derived from their places of origin or their genealogy. In the prologue, he explains the method he followed in the book, comments on the science of history, and adds information on names derived from places or genealogy. In this regard Sullam al-Wusul is also a book on genealogy. The Index section has been added to the edition. It is composed of four parts: personal names, place names, publication titles, names of institutions. A very heavy set. ‎MUSTAFA BATMAN.‎

‎Tobacco smuggling in the Black Sea region of the Ottoman Empire, 1883-1914.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 150 p. Tobacco smuggling in the Black Sea region of the Ottoman Empire, 1883-1914. With the founding of the Régie in 1883, Ottoman tobacco producers were suddenly faced with a new company that took control over their mainstay crop. Tobacco producers and merchants who had problems with this new system came up with a variety of responses. One of these responses was the hiding and smuggling of the crop, and the number of tobacco smugglers rapidly increased. Many people from different sectors of the economy collaborated with the smugglers in order to make more money. The Ottoman government, worked to resolve the problems between the company and those working in the tobacco sector, but it failed to find a solution that would be satisfactory to all or that qualitatively would change the situation. It was the result of the different definition of ¿who is a smuggler' question by the government and the Régie. In the face of such vastly differing parameter, the Ottoman government could not reach a compromise with the Régie. Nor did the government create a new, alternative administration to the Régie because of the agreements between the Ottoman Public Debt Administration and the state. Within this context, this study examines the role of the ordinary people and the role of the organized movement against the monopolization of a crop. It is an attempt to show how the crowds in tobacco sector reacted to the changes in your daily lives.‎

‎Very Good English Paperback. Pbo. Foolscap 8vo. (17 x 11 cm). In Turkish. 38, [2] p. A study on 31 Mart Incident in the Ottoman Empire, 1909. The 31 March Incident (Turkish: 31 Mart Vakasi or 31 Mart Olayi) was a 1909 rebellion of reactionaries in Istanbul against the restoration of the constitutional system that had taken place in 1908. It took place on 13 April 1909 (31 March on the Rumi calendar in use at the time in Turkey for official timekeeping). The countercoup had attempted to put an end to the nascent Second Constitutional Era in the Ottoman Empire and to the newly established influence of the Committee of Union and Progress, in order to re-affirm the position of the Sultan Abdul Hamid II as absolute monarch. The incident was a milestone in the Turkish military's encroaching on the political sphere.‎
