‎Assos: Living in the rocks. An archaeological guide.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (22 x 14 cm). In English. 180 p. Color and b/w ills. "Situated in northwest Asia Minor on a volcanic rock overlooking the Gulf of Adramyttion, Assos now stands in the village of Behram Köyü, Çanakkale. The settlement goes back to the second millennium BC and was later re-established by Aeolian settlers from Methymna in the 7th century BC. Assos possesses the only temple in the Doric order in Archaic Asia Minor. Great construction activities were conducted in the 4th century BC during the tyranny of the Banker Eubulus and his slave Hermeias. Aristotle's visit and his founding a school in Assos in 347-345 BC are arguably the most famous events in the history of the city. During Roman rule, Assos established good relations with Rome and as a result it was granted autonomy and the right to issue coins. The visit of St. Paul is another important landmark in the history of the city. In 1838 some of the architectural blocks were smuggled to Paris. The Archaeological Institute of America carried out the first systematic excavations in Assos between 1881-1883. A century later, Turkish archaeologists started to dig on the site. With its archaeological remains, authentic village culture, beautiful sea, hotels, restaurants, olive groves and forests, Assos offers visitors an unforgettable experience and journey back in time. This book provides readers with a handy guide to Assos/Behram Köyü and its environs".‎

‎Ipek: Imperial Ottoman silks and velvets. With contribution by Serife Atlihan, Beata Biedronska-Slotowa, Harald Bohmer, Inna Vishnevskaia. Compiled and edited by Julien Raby and Alison Effeny.‎

‎New New English Original cloth bdg. Dust wrapper. Folio. (37 x 28 cm). Edition in English. 360 p., color ills. Ipek: Imperial Ottoman silks and velvets. With contribution by Serife Atlihan, Beata Biedronska-Slotowa, Harald Bohmer, Inna Vishnevskaia. Compiled and edited by Julien Raby and Alison Effeny. "This book is the result of an international research project under-taken over a number of years. It is the first major study of Ottoman textiles to attempt a classification of the key technical and decorative categories, and is also the first to offer a catalogue of dateable textiles. The authors not only draw on the famous collections of the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul and other major museums around the world, but have rediscovered many lesser-known fabrics in ecclesiastical treasuries in Russia and Central Europe. New research in the Ottoman archives has shed documentary lihgt on the legislation of silk production, and on the competing industries of Bursa and Istanbul. Examples of the three weaves favoured by the Ottomans, seraser (cloth of gold and the silver), kadife (velvet) and kemha (a type of brocaded fabric) are illustrated in full-page colour illustrations, and black-and-white figures of many of the key design groups demonstrate the creativity of Ottoman weavers.". Status symbols, diplomatic gifts, artistic mediums, and economic treasures--figured silk fabrics were among the most powerful and most characteristic artistic products of the Ottoman Empire. Wars were fought for control of silk revenues, and governments devoted major bureaucratic efforts toward the organization, regulation, and taxation of silk production. Ipek: The Crescent & the Rose is the most comprehensive and magnificently illustrated overview of Ottoman silk textiles of the 16th and 17th centuries. Its lavish, full-bleed, six-color reproductions of fabrics from the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul, and...‎

‎Surname-i Hümayun 1582: An imperial celebration.‎

‎New English Original bdg. HC. In publisher's special slip-case. Folio. (48 x 34 cm). Edition in English. 136 p., color ills. "The Surname-i Hümayun literally translates into Imperial Festival Book, and were albums that commemorated celebrations in the Ottoman Empire in pictorial and textual detail. Such celebrations included mainly imperial weddings and circumcision festivals. These albums were commissioned by the Ottoman Imperial family, usually by the Sultan presiding at the time. The Surname recounts the festivities in order of when the events took place, which includes in detail processions, grand entrance of the Sultan, feasts, entertainers, musicians, dancers, gift giving, firework displays, circumcision and wedding ceremonies. Although many of the Surnames were made to celebrate circumcisions of Ottoman Princes, the first Surname was commissioned in 1524 for a wedding ceremony. This Surname-I Hümayun was commissioned for a circumcision festival, as well it was to commemorate Sultan Murad III's son Prince Mehmed. This festival lasted fifty-two days and was probably one of the most elaborate and grandiose festival the Ottomans had ever held, and it was well documented. The organization of this Surname was done chronologically, each day documented in order with what occurred. The book was created by an author named 'Intizami' which is a pen-name, and the illustrations were done mainly by court artists.".‎

‎New English Original cloth bdg. In publisher's special box. 4to. Oblong 4to. (25 x 34 cm). In Turkish. 357 p., color and b/w photos. "'Yadigar-i Istanbul', has been selected among 35.535 photographs from 911 photograph albums in the library of Yildiz Palace. The oldest of these albums date back to the year 1857. The photograph albums of Yildiz Palace entirely given to Istanbul University in 1924 at the behest of Ataturk are among the world's most remarkable photography collections. Those who see the "Yadigar-i Istanbul photos will realize the early beauties of Istanbul as well as the great changes it has undergone. As a result of the study made on 911 albums containing 35.535 photographs and on the photographers of the albums, almost 370 photographer names emerged. In "Yadigar-i Istanbul, the names of these photographers and their photograph albums are also available. It is a great contribution not only to the history of Ottoman photography but also to that of world photography. It will lead to new research in world's photography history and probably rewriting of the history of photography.".‎

‎Anatolia: On the trail of the Hittite civilization. Cities, temples, inscriptions, monuments, wars and treaties from Hattusa, the capital, to Syria.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. 322 p. Color ills. In English. This guide/documentary book has been prepared for those readers and travellers who are interested in the history of Anatolia and its cultural heritage. In this book we attempt to present in detail the history of the Hittites, the first state established in Anatolia, and the Neo-Hittites. Their history, the structure of their states, religious beliefs, and their importance in history, as well as their major cities, and excavations made within the region, and museums that exhibit pieces found at Hittite megaliths and other settlements are all fully explained. Other Hittite settlements outside Anatolia, in Northern Syria, are also mentioned in the book. There is also information about the Hattians, the first society the Hittites ran into when they first came to Anatolia, and Assyrian Trade Colonies. The book has four main sections. Hattians and the Assyrian Trade Colonies are dealt with in the first section. The second section discusses the history of the Hittites and Neo-Hittites. The third section consists of colour coded maps describing places to visit in Anatolia. The maps show the settlements starting with the capital of Hattusa, the ruins, megaliths and tablets. With photos and up to date information the sub chapters talk about pieces belonging to the Hittites, Neo-Hittites, Hattians and Assyrian Trade Colonies displayed in museums in the region. The fourth and final section of the book explains the expanding Hittite domain outside of Anatolia, in Northern Syria, and the relationship between the Hittites and the Egyptians. The book contains details of about 20 museums, as well as 81 settlement names, tablets and monuments. Hittite and Neo-Hittite finds from the Ottoman Era were moved to the Museum of the Ancient Orient in the Istanbul Archaeological Museums. Others found during the Turkish Republic Era are exhibited in the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations in Ankara. Today architectural finds are displayed in regional museums.‎

‎New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (31 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. [xxvi], 168 p., b/w and color ills. Constantinople, 1918.= Konstantiniyye, 1918. Introducttion by Ali Serim. In this book you will see a city, which was Capital to empires during its poorest days. Once there was greatness and glory as in the drawings of Melchior Lorichs. The Ottoman naval defeat at Lepanto in 1571 or for some other people the failure of the second siege of Vienna in 1683 was the beginning of the decline. The Empire was effectively ended by the World War I (WWI) and those concerned were not able to preserve the city in the appropriate form it deserved. I purchased the album containing these pictures a decade ago. It is understood that an mysterious French Officer who came to Constantinople during the occupation of the city by Allied Forces at the end of WWI in 1918. He took photographs of buildings and people capturing interesting scenes from social life documented the need for extensive restoration of the old city.‎

‎Tracing Dr. Kilisli Rifat: From Ottoman to Turk and beyond.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 200 p. Tracing Dr. Kilisli Rifat: From Ottoman to Turk and beyond. Nükhet Kardam grew up in Istanbul in the 1960s and 1970s and left Turkey to study international relations in Canada. As she continued to live and work abroad, her ties to Turkey grew stronger rather than weaker over the years. Thus, she embarked on a mysterious journey to explore her grandfather Dr. Kilisli Rifat's life. Her grandparents, Dr. Kilisli Rifat, a well-known medical doctor, author, bureaucrat and professor, and his wife Nazire, the daughter of an Ottoman pasha, were subjects of the multicultural Ottoman Empire. Then they became Turks, 'citizens' of the Republic of Turkey. How did they adapt to becoming citizens of a unitary nation-state with a reconstructed history, national myths and identity? How did they survive the destruction of a vast empire, the wars, and the devastation? Kardam found out that we are links in a chain of generations, unconsciously affected by their suffering or unfinished business, until we acknowledge the past. And her search resulted in surprising discoveries that led to questioning her own identity.‎
