‎Hermus (Gediz) valley in Western Turkey. Results of an archaeological and historical survey.‎

‎New English Paperback. 4to. (29 x 21 cm). In English with a Turkish summary. 368 p., b/w and color ills. Hermus (Gediz) valley in Western Turkey. Results of an archaeological and historical survey. The importance of Gediz River, which has been inhabited since Neolithicum (6th Millenium B.C.) in 15 sites, had increased rapidly due to fertile lands and suitable communication routes with Aegean Islands and Interior Anatolia. The Gediz known Seha River Land by Hittites was ruled (ca.1300 B.C.) by vassal king Manapatarhunda appointed by Mursili II. Many newly discovered Late Bronze Age sites i.e. Kumtepe, K. Yamanlar, Pinarbasi, Nemrut, Akçapinar, Asartepe-Urganli, Gavurtepe, testify to this expansion. During the Iron Age, Gediz River was called Hermus. The valley connected Ionia, Aeolis and Lydia with each other. The Aeolic towns were generally small and fortified on high and rocky hill sites with isolated acropolis on the summit. Some newly discovered fortified settlements were connected with so far unknown Aeolic cities: Aegiroessa with Boztepe, Notium with Kumtepe and Killa with Asarlik Tepe. The central part of the Hermus valley was the land of Lydians with the capital Sardis. No other Lydian town was satisfactorily explored so far. Clear traces of Lydian occupation were attested in Daldis, Akçapinar, Mersinli, and Kemaliye during recent research. The burial mounds i.e.tumuliwith tomb chambers built with delicately dressed limestone blocks were so popular in Lydia and hence compared with Egypt and called also Lydian pyramids. Some of them were investigated and recorded during the survey which were illicitly excavated by treasure hunters. Hermus enjoyed a high degree of prosperity under Attalids and Romans. The associations of professions are well developed and mentioned in inscriptions especially in the production of textile and leather. Numerous fortifications, monasteries and a summer residence at Nymphaeum were built during 13th century under the Lascarids. 12th and 13th centuries are characterized also by migrating Turcoman tribes into Byzantine territories. The Emirate of Saruhan (1313-1410) continued the former stability in central Lydia. Manisa started to prosper as a capital of the Emirate. During Ottoman Period Manisa was a city governed by princes of the Sultanate. For that reason, Manisa is a typical Ottoman town adorned with numerous mosques, khans, Turkish baths and covered bazaars. The fertile valley is still an extensive reservoir for the research on the past cultures not only with respect to material remains but also the continuity of cultures is still perceivable i.e. in the tradition of place names, agriculture, handicrafts and architecture, despite the evergrowing pressure of 'modernity.'‎

‎RECEP SENTÜRK, MUHAMMED SAID BILAL.‎

‎Human rights in the Ottoman Reform: Foundations, motivations and formations.‎

‎New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 368 p. This book argues that the late Ottoman constitutional reforms (i) were carried out as a consequence of the metamorphosis of the Empire into a modern state, (ii) were considerably in favour of the bureaucratic class, (iii) were paying regard to the expectations of the Ottoman and the Western public, and most importantly (iv) had been in conformity with Islamic jurisprudence. The constitutional reforms in the late Ottoman Empire on fundamental rights and freedoms were an idiosyncratic reflection of a trans-regional political paradigm shift. Most of the reforms were carried out in conformity with Islamic jurisprudence that had been continuously implemented in the Ottoman judicial system for centuries. The majority of the legislation was nothing but a codification of Islamic principles of jurisprudence. Yet some of them were quite new to the system, such as legislation on imprisonment and custody. Nevertheless, these new systems were adapted to Islamic jurisprudence. Moreover, the new regime of the protection of human rights brought an innovation to the judicial system concerning bureaucrats' fundamental rights. These reforms reflected a significant effort for the adjustment of the new Ottoman administrative practices to the principles of Islamic jurisprudence.‎

‎Qadi registers in Bulgaria. A study on Ottoman Court registers preserved at the St. Cyril and Methodius National Library.‎

‎New English Original bdg. HC. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. 420 p. Qadi registers in Bulgaria. A study on Ottoman Court registers preserved at the St. St. Cyril and Methodius National Library. This book is the outcome of an extensive research work by Prof. Dr. Recep Çi¿dem from Harran University in Turkey. It is published within IRCICA¿s Series of Sharia Court Registers. It analyzes the records of the Ottoman Sharia law courts preserved at St. St. Cyril and Methodius National Library in Bulgaria. In the first chapter of the book the author gives information on the cases dealt with by these courts, the procedures for the appointment of the qadis (judges) and naibs (deputy judges), the terminology of judicial records, documents issued by the courts, and a number of other subjects of interest for the law historian. The second chapter is devoted to Muslim minority courts with coverage of such themes as the structure of the Sharia courts; the First Instance Court, the Court of Appeals, the High Sharia Court, relations between the Sharia courts and secular courts, administrative authorities, officials, lawyers, the extent of the power of these courts, among others. The third chapter, which is the main part of the study, examines individual registers. A total of 191 registers preserved in the library were scrutinized and documents related to each case were scanned. The Foreword of Prof. Çi¿dem explains in detail the salient features of each chapter and specifies that the third chapter focuses mainly on the Sharia courts of the independence period in Bulgaria, specifically between 1878-1945. The extensive bibliography and the index of personal names will be useful for researchers concerned.‎

‎Istanbul: Original Manuscript. 1324 Safer AH 1908. No Binding. Very Good. Original color manuscript calendar prepared on a fine special paper with 'ahar'. 36x225 cm. In Ottoman script Turkish with Arabic letters. 2 p. Several ink stains on paper chipped on extremities. A very good manuscript. It shows astronomic situations locations of planets and stars and climates in 1324 AD 1908. It starts with high praise to Sultan Abdlhamid II with an old style of color moon & crescent icon. Sealed by Mehmed Pasazde A. Ihsan. On the verso of paper can be seen detailed calendar and details of 'ruzname'. Written on 'printed' down of the paper probably it's prepared for the printing therefore it's understood that Ihsan and Refet were thinking to print this 'taqwim'. Prepared in the year of the Second Constitutional Regime II. Mesrutiyet which was Abdul Hamid II's fall came as a result of the 1908 Young Turk Revolution and the Young Turks put the 1876 Constitution back into effect. It seems it's prepared before fall of the Sultan and for the present to the Sultan. The Second Constitutional Period spanned from 1908 until after World War I when the Ottoman Empire was dissolved. "The starting year of the Hijr calendar al-taqwim al-hijri the fundamental Islamic lunar calendar still in use among Muslims until today is 622 CE. Its beginning corresponds to the Hijra or emigration of Prophet Muhammed and his followers from Mecca to Medina. It is based on the revolution of the moon around the Earth and consists of twelve months of 29 or 30 days: Muharram 30 Safar 29 Rab' al-awwal 30 Rabi' al-thani 29 Jumda al-awwal 30 Jumda al-thani 29 Rajab 30 Sha'ban 29 Ramadhan 30 Shawwal 29 Dhul-'l-qi'da 30 and Dhul-hijja 29 or 30. The lunar year consists of 354 days which is 11 days less than the solar year and every 33 years it falls one year behind the Gregorian calendar. The discrepancy with the solar year which follows the seasons meant that Muslim countries also used the solar calendar and some calendars drawn up by astronomers include the dates according to the European Gregorian calendar named after Pope Gregory XIII in 1582. Ottoman Turkey used both the Islamic lunar calendar and a solar calendar known as the Rum or Roman calendar which was based on the Julian calendar introduced since the times of Julius Caesar in 46 BC. The Roman calendar was inherited from the Byzantines and was used by the Ottomans for the taxation of agricultural revenues. The year according to the Rum or Julian calendar began on 1 March and the Ottomans took the starting year to be that of the Hijra. To make up for the gain of 11 days made by the solar Rum calendar over the Islamic calendar a leap year was deducted from the Rum calendar every 33 years. A rzname is a set of tables giving the first days of the months in both the Islamic and Rum calendars the date on which the sun enters each sign of the zodiac and eclipses of the sun and moon. Also known as takvm-i dim perpetual calendar or takvm-i devr-i dim calendar of perpetual motion the ruzname were permanently valid whatever the year. There is no evidence that such calendars were produced in pre-Ottoman times and they may therefore be regarded as a type unique to Ottoman Turkey.". ‎From 8000 BC to 2000 BC six thousand years of the Burdur-Antalya region.‎

‎New English Original bdg. HC. 4to. (29 x 22 cm). Edition in English. [x], 194 p., color and b/w ills. From 8000 BC to 2000 BC six thousand years of the Burdur-Antalya region. When attempting to understand and comment on the civilisation in which we live, one of the subjects that arouses the most curiosity is undoubtedly the desire to learn the stages that mankind has passed through to reach this point in time. In the book in front of you the author has attempted to describe, with archaeological facts, some of the development process of civilisation in the prehistoric period before the discovery of writing, from around 8000 to 2000 BC, in the region of Southwest Anatolia, Burdur and Antalya. The presence of many impressive city and monuments from the Classical Period in the Antalya and Burdur regions and their vicinity reflects the importance of this region in historical times. However, the region also has important and interesting finds from the prehistoric periods. One of the aims of this book is to introduce and describe as many as possible of the visual finds uncovered in the excavations carried out over the past 50 years at the four main prehistoric settlements of the region, Hacilar, Kurucay, Hoyucek and Bademagaci. While some of the pictures, drawings and plans are presented for the first time in this book, most of them have been published before in excavation reports, books or articles. However, as is the case in most academic fields, the majority of these publications are only read by professionals, making it virtually impossible for most people to have access to them. ‎REFIK HALID [KARAY], (Founder and owner), (1888-1965).‎

‎[PRE-REPUBLIC COMPLETE SATYRIC MAGAZINE] Aydede: Pazartesi ve Çarsamba günleri nesrolunur mizah gazetesi. [i.e. Man-in-the-moon: Ottoman satyrical newspaper published twice a week].‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Contemporary two-cloth bindings. Folio. (40 x 29 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). Extremely rare complete ran of the first episode in Arabic letters, of this richly illustrated pre-Republic Turkish satyric magazine including 90 issues in two folio volumes, published between 2 Kanun-i Sânî 1338 [February 2, 1922] - 9 Ikinci Tesrîn 1339 [November 9, 1923]. The Ottoman Turkish satirical magazine "Aydede" appeared in the first episode from January to November 1922 twice a week in 90 issues. Its founder, owner, and publisher Refik Halit Karay (1888-1965), a well-known poet and journalist, criticized through the published articles, poems, and caricatures not only the social inconveniences and imbalances within the Turkish society but also the young Turkish republic in general. One of the contributors to Aydede was Ratip Tahir Burak, a well-known Turkish cartoonist. Despite the short period of its publication, the magazine influenced the satirical style of many intellectuals and subsequent satirical magazines, including Akbaba. In 1922, the publication of the magazine ceased when Refik Halit was forced by the Turkish Government into exile in Aleppo and Beirut. The reason was Refik Halit's overt opposition to the ongoing Turkish War of Independence. After his return, he published the magazine 1948 and 1949 for another ten months in the second episode in 125 issues, but with little success. (Wikipedia). Duman 0156.‎

‎Geleneksel Safranbolu evleri ve olusumu.‎

‎Very Good English Paperback. Pbo. Small 4to. In Turkish. 194, [72] p. B/w and color ills. Traditional Turkish houses in Safranbolu and its architecture. Safranbolu is a town and district of Karabük Province in the Black Sea region of Turkey. It is about two hundred kilometers north of Ankara and about a hundred kilometers south of the Black Sea coast, or more precisely about 9 kilometers north of the city of Karabük. Former Turkish names of the town were Zalifre and Tarakliborlu and in Greek Saframpolis, ??????????? It was part of Kastamonu Province until 1923 and Zonguldak Province between 1923 and 1995. According to the 2000 census, the population of the district is 47,257, of which 31,697 live in the town of Safranbolu. The district covers an area of 1,000 km2 (386 sq mi), and the town lies at an elevation of 485 m (1,591 ft). The Old Town preserves many old buildings, with 1008 registered historical artifacts. These are: 1 private museum, 25 mosques, 5 tombs, 8 historical fountains, 5 Turkish baths, 3 caravanserais, 1 historical clock tower, 1 sundial and hundreds of houses and mansions. Also there are mounds of ancient settlements, rock tombs and historical bridges. The Old Town is situated in a deep ravine in a fairly dry area in the rain shadow of the mountains. The New Town can be found on the plateau about two kilometers west of the Old Town. The name of the town derives from 'saffron' and the Greek word 'polis' (city), since Safranbolu was a trading place and a center for growing saffron.Today saffron is still alive at the village of Davutobasi which is 22 km east of Safranbolu and probably one of the best quality saffron in the world. Safranbolu was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites in 1994 due to its well-preserved Ottoman era houses and architecture.‎

‎Sinan the Architect and his works. Translated by Ali Otoman.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. In English. 224 p. Color and b/w ills. "Sinan's name has come to represent the essence of Ottoman architecture. He lived at a time when the Empire was at its zenith both in terms of political power and artistic production. Indeed, Sinan's achievements throughout the Empire and especially in Istanbul have never been equalled. Most of the buildings designed by Sinan, and certainly his most outstanding, ones, were built in Istanbul. These works seem to have been developed during an architectural contest, so rich are they in novel ideas and inovations. They were also most adequately topographically located, greatly contributing to the city's unique skyline. With such a range of highly original examples, Istanbul was practically turned into a open-air museum.".‎
