Im Jahr 2006 wurde zum Thema »Manifestationen von Macht und Hierarchien in Stadtraum und Landschaft« ein damals neuartiges Format wissenschaftlicher Kommunikation ins Leben gerufen, das es einer multidisziplinären Gruppe internationaler Kolleginnen und Kollegen ¿ darunter zahlreiche Nachwuchswissenschaftler ¿ ermoglichen sollte, sich uber zwei bis drei Jahre hinweg regelmäßig auszutauschen. Mittlerweile sind die Netzwerke zu einem Markenzeichen der Abteilung geworden, und nach dem Abschluss des vierten Netzwerkes »Natur und Kult in Anatolien« im November 2016 ¿ dessen Ergebnisse ebenfalls in der Reihe BYZAS vorgelegt werden sollen ¿ wird es im Fruhjahr 2017 mit »Essen in Anatolien und seinen Nachbarregionen« weitergehen. Mit dem vorliegenden Band »Wirtschaft als Machtbasis. Beiträge zur Rekonstruktion vormoderner Wirtschaftssysteme in Anatolien« hoffen wir, die Beschäftigung mit Wirtschaft als einer wesentlichen Ebene der Analyse in den Kultur- und Geschichtswissenschaften weiter stimulieren zu konnen. Hier gibt es besonders in den deutschsprachigen klassischen Altertumswissenschaften noch Nachholbedarf. Wie schon im Titel, vor allem aber in der Einfuhrung durch die Herausgeberin Katja Piesker deutlich wird, erheben wir keineswegs den Anspruch, fertige Modelle oder gar Losungen zu präsentieren. Die Diskussionen im Netzwerk haben gezeigt, dass zunächst die Zahl befundbasierter Analysen und Interpretationen vermehrt werden muss, bevor sich daraus Modelle ableiten lassen. Diese werden sich dann an ihrer flexiblen Anwendbarkeit auf lokal und regional stark differierende Szenarien messen lassen mussen. Mein Dank gilt an erster Stelle Katja Piesker, die als Bauhistorikerin und Bauforscherin die Aufgabe ubernommen hat, heterogene archäologische Beiträge in einem Band zu vereinen und in ihrer Einfuhrung auch inhaltlich zusammenzufuhren. Unterstutzt wurde sie dabei von den Sprechern des Netzwerkes Jurgen Seeher und Anja Slawisch sowie vom Koordinator der wissenschaftlichen Netzwerke Bernhard Ludwig und den Mitarbeiterinnen in der Redaktion der Abteilung Dominique Kruger und Marie-Christine Junghans. This exhibition of Allied postcards depicting the invasion of the Dardanelles on March 18, 1915, and the subsequent land warfare campaign in Gallipoli consists of items painstakingly selected by collector and doctor of chemistry Dr. Seyhun Binzet among hundreds of postcards he acquired from a number of countries over decades to evoke an imagery of some of the darkest days in Turkish history. The urban history of Istanbul holds several important breaking points. Tanpinar, for example, makes the following assessment on the rupture that took place at the turn of the 20th century: "In the fifteen years between 1908 and 1923, [the city] has completely lost its former identity. The reforms instigated by the Constitutional Monarchy, three big wars, a series of fires of various magnitudes, financial crises, the dissolution of an empire, and, finally in 1923, the adoption of a civilization at the verge of which we stood scratching our heads for a century, have completely eradicated her former identity." This radical change was followed by the onset of rural to urban migration. Today, Istanbul is in a process of transformation in which she battles her own historic identity. Istanbul Research Institute is carefully following this process. The Institute maintains its focus on Istanbul's urban identity through a series of exhibitions, conferences, and books. The latest issue of Annual of Istanbul Studies thus includes exhaustive works on the historic identity of the city.

The urban transformation project remains on the agenda, creating new debates every day. Istanbul's urban identity is at the center of these debates. As the clash between old and new takes on political significance, the fundamental problem finds expression in the cultural sphere. The crux of the matter is whether to keep intact Istanbul's identity as a historical city or to transform it into a synthetic identity that some claim includes the old. The truth is, no matter how complex the problem, we lack the knowledge about Istanbul as a historical city. This lack in turn causes lack of awareness. And an awareness configured in this way chooses not construction but destruction, which is the easier route under all circumstances. Annual of Istanbul Studies issues its third volume for the world of science and culture. This volume includes research papers that present us a strong point of view focusing on Istanbul's identity as a historical city. How will the Istanbul of the near future look? Have we developed the criteria for assessing and evaluating this urban landscape? These questions of vital importance will no doubt be addressed in our volumes to come. We would like to take this opportunity to emphasize that we will be happy to receive suggestions and contributions from scholars and intellectuals.

Is this merely a coincidence or a mesh of problems in dire need of a resolution, stratified throughout history from the past to present? If our answer entails resolving this mesh of problems on the scale of Istanbul, then we can certainly call for a common denominator through which diverse opinions and approaches can counter with one another. The Annual of Istanbul Studies thus begins its publishing life to compensate for this need in terms of modern scientific thought.
