Levni's pictorial narrative of the Surname-i Vehbi, poet Vehbi's account of the festival organized in 1720 to commemorate the circumcision of four sons of Sultan Ahmed III, is undoubtedly one of the masterpieces of Ottoman art and possibly the last great example of illustrated Islamic manuscript. Preserved in the Topkapi Palace Museum in Istanbul, the work is illustrated with 137 paintings that re-create the personages, settings, and events of an extraordinarily lively and enchanting age known as the Tulip Period.

Clemens Emin Bosch was a German scholar who began his academic career in the field of ancient history in Germany and left his country for Istanbul because of his wife's Jewish heritage at a period which he might have been very productive as an academician. When he was in Istanbul he apparently converted to Islam and took the Turkish name Emin. Clemens Emin Bosch, who lived approximately twenty years in Istanbul and died there, is widely known for his studies in the field of ancient numismatics. He joined the Side excavations (in Pamphylia) which began in 1946 and studied and produced publications on the inscriptions preserved in the Antalya Museum and on the inscriptions found during the Side excavations.

Die vorliegende Arbeit basiert auf der im Fruhjahr 1997 an der Fakultät fur Raumplanung und Architektur der Technischen Universität Wien vorgelegten Dissertation der Verfasserin. Im Zuge der Bearbeitung wurden jedoch einige Abschnitte der ursprunglichen Fassung zusammen-gefasst oder gänzlich weggelassen, sowie die Literaturangaben zum Teil aktualisiert gemäß dem Vorschlag des AKMED-Forschungsinstituts wurde die Arbeit ins Turkische ubersetzt und wird zweisprachig vorgelegt, was zu einem besonderen und zusätzlichen Ziel geworden ist. Wie bei jeder Arbeit dieser Komplexität, waren auch hier zahlreiche Fachleute, Institutionen und Wegbegleiter beteiligt, ohne deren Unterstutzung es mir nicht moglich gewesen wäre, die Erforschung dieses faszinierenden Gebäudes zu verwirklichen.

In the considerably long time span from the 16th century to the beginning of the 20th century, when the Iznik, Kutahya and Canakkale ceramics were in production, the Ottoman Empire spread across three continents, and her galleons, galleys and lighters carried her flag on trade missions and voyages on the open seas such as the Red Sea, the Persian Gulf, the Black Sea and the Indian Ocean in addition to the Mediterranean. Various types of imaginary ships in the Ottoman ceramics bringing to life the dreams of the masters regarding the far-away lands seem to be capturing an image only. The most important feature of the vessels, usually depicted without details, is their sails of various types, which led them to the open seas.

Correspondences and letters of Mikes Kelemen, (1690-1761), was a Transylvanian-born Hungarian political figure and essayist, noted for his rebellious activities against the Habsburg Monarchy. Mikes is referred to as the "Hungarian Goethe", made famous by his Letters from Turkey. With these, Mikes laid the foundations of Hungarian literary prose, and he is regarded as one of the first Hungarian prose authors. He was born in Zágon and grew up in Zabola (present-day Covasna County, Romania). He fought the Habsburg until being forced to flee to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, France and eventually the Ottoman Empire. While in Tekirdag, where he lived in exile with the Transylvanian Prince Ferenc Rákóczi, Mikes completed and published his essays. After Rákóczi's death in 1735, he stayed in exile until his own death.

After that he studied in Wien for dermatology, he returned to be a professor in Darülfünûn (University of Istanbul). After about 15 years in the professorship of the University until the University Reform in 1933, he was excluded by the majority by the national minister of education, Resit Galip and unfortunately he committed suicide on 11 March 1934. He founded the Mekteb-i Harbiye (The Ottoman Military Academy), was twice viceroy of the province of Bagdad, was the first ambassador of the Sublime Porte at Saint-James's Court, was appointed Serasker (Commander-in-chief / Minister of War), became a Cabinet minister, and was conferred the title of Seyh-ül Vüzera (Head of Imperial Ministers). During a long career that spanned a long lifetime (he lived to be eighty-eight), he was one of the personalities who shaped, as well as were themselves shaped by what historian Ilber Ortayli called "the longest century" of the Ottoman state.

Little is known about Octavien Dalvimart, besides the facts that he worked in Britain as painter and engraver, and that he was living in Paris in 1803. According to the prologue to this edition, he travelled during four years (starting in 1796), always drew from nature, and was in Athens in 1797. This elegant work was first published in 1802, and again in 1818 and 1820. It includes 60 drawings of human types from the Ottoman Empire. (Abbey Travel 370; Colas 782; Lipperheide 1422). The explanatory texts, in English and French, are based on extracts from works by Baron de Tott, J. Dallaway, G.A. Olivier, M. Montague, J. Pitton de Tournefort, ?ouradgea d'Ohsson and others. Dalvimart's drawings have been used in similar albums and illustrated other travel accounts. Human types are precisely drawn and handsomely depicted in very real colors. "This plate, which represents the dress of an inhabitant of the coast of Syria, is also very similar to that worn by the Asiatic Janissaries. It is highly picturesque, and very different from the janissaries of Constantinople. In many eastern countries the climate is very variable, and the inhabitants therefore are obliged to clothe themselves warmer than Europeans perhaps might think it necessary, and to put on several kinds of dress, one over the other, that they may either lay them aside or resume them at their pleasure, as the temperature of the atmosphere varies. The blue cloak thrown over the left shoulder is for that purpose". = "Cette planche represente le costume d'un habitant de la côte de Syrie. Il ressemble beaucoup a celui des Jannisaires Asiatiques. The male dress of the Turks is regulated by sumptuary laws, and is distinctive of the different classes, but the females are permitted to wear any sort of ornament they choose. The TUrks of any considerable rank in life consider it as a degradation to be seen walking; and they constantly go about the city on horseback, accompanied by a numerous train of servants on foot. Some very pompous and rich individuals have been known to have above an hundred in their train. These are always as richly dressed, and as numerous as possible at any of their feasts, particularly that of the Beyram (sic. "Simia is one of the numerous islands scattered all over the Archipelago. It is at a very small distance from the Asiatic coast, and a little to the north of the island of Rhodes. Most of these islands were formerly the cause of frequent wars, and were sometimes subject to one power, sometimes to another, and many of them were often also independent of all. They have now, however, for a great length of time, been subject to the Turkish government, which derives an annual tribute from each of them. It has been remarked before, that the dress of the women in many of these islands was extremely picturesque and becoming. The present, perhaps, is only partially so, on account of the concealment of the lower part of the face; as well as on account of the form of the body, which is too undeterminate, and therefore appears ill-formed". = "Simie est une de ces isles qui sont repandues en grand nombre dans l'Archipel. The Arabian women of the desert wear a number singular ornaments; large metal rings in the ears, others of the same kind upon the ancles and arms, pieces of coral hung about hem, and also necklaces of all sorts. They sometimes even hang small bells to their hair, and the young girls fix them to their feet. And it is not an uncommon custom among the Bedouins, as with the more civilized Arabians, to puncture different parts of the body and insert a blue dye.". etc.

"The varieties of female dress in most of the eastern nations can never be distinguished when they are in the streets, both form their veils and the long cloaks in which they are concealed. At Cairo they conceal the head and part of the body by a large black veil; and those who can afford rich habits, are always covered with a large wrapper. The veil, which is always the first concern with the women, for it is the very last part of their dress they would part with, is formed of a long triangular piece of linen cloth fitted to the head, and falling down before, so as to cover all the face except the eyes. In the mind of every Turk, there is a set image for Ottoman Sultans that he has acquired from a variety of sources: school books, historical texts, encyclopaedias, etc. The Ottoman royal image is not altogether unknown to the Europeans either. This is due to the fact that there is a pictorial record of the Ottoman Sultans created by the numerous portraits produced through the centuries by Turkish and European artists. It was a great pleasure for me to write the explanatory text to this special album of sultan portraits in Inan and Suna Kirac collection. The absence of an original text in the album itself complicated the study of the portraits in view of their iconography, especially the richly detailed backgrounds and attributes used for each sultan. This necessitated a thorough study of historical sources and a search for comparative albums. Nevertheless 17 similar albums dating from approximately the same period were recorded and listed after the text. The main question was to explore into the realm of the Ottoman artist to discover his approach to portraiture. In Islam, to read a person's character through the study of his physiognomy has been a science. With this in mind, did the Ottoman artist confine himself only to the preset details of each sultan's physiognomy or did he enrich his knowledge about the sultans through other sources? I strongly believe that the artist of the Kirac album did this. Therefore, in the short texts accompanying each portrait, I chose to give a brief record of the sultan's deeds, interests and personality as revealed in historical sources. In this way, it would be easier to comprehend the artist's interpretation. In the main text, I tried to give a comprehensive summary of the history of royal portraiture among the Ottomans and presented the prototypes to this album. Then came a discussion of the Kirac album itself not only in view of its artistic value but also as a significant source of information about imperial attire and certainly the artistic milieu of the Ottoman Empire in the first decades of the 19th century.

Diyarbakir was ruled by the Roman Empire for 700 years and we do not have enough information about the long time slice from the Roman rule in 69 BC until the conquest by the Islamic armies in 639 AD. The city maintained its economic, political and strategic important during this period and so as to gain dominance there were great wars between Rome and Parthians / Sassanids the great powers of the period. The Zerzevan Castle, which is the military settlement of Rome located in the Çinar district of Diyarbakir province and protects the border line, has an important place in illuminating the history of the region together with boosting the tourism.
