Salih Ozbaran focuses on a subject which has not been studied fully and accurately so far, i.e., the Ottoman expansion towards the Indian Ocean including the imperial conquests, organizations, exploitation of southern Arab lands and coastal African ports. He also examines the confrontations with native rulers, their communal organizations and the Portuguese seaborne forces in the 16th century. Ozbaran comes to the following should not be regarded as a 'linear process of development'; they did not practice the fief (timar) system in the southern provinces, but the method of tax-farming (iltizam) was developed in which yearly and quarterly paid officals and soldiers played an important role. He also empasizes that the Ottomans were not fully organized in keeping the permanent seamen and naval organizations in the provinces facing the Indian Ocean although they had strongholds in towns and in country firtresses with support of firearms.

(Zephyrion, Ingira, Aulai, Ankhiale, Kyinda-Kundi, Sizzu).= Verlorene Stadte an der küste Kilikiens von Mersin bis Tarsus. Während einer Reparaturarbeit an einem Wasserkanal in der dieser Gemeinde fand man im Meer Ringe zum Anbinden von Schiffen, die zu einem alten Hafen gehörten. Als diese Ringe aus dem Meer getragen wurden, befand ich mich zufällig dort und das trug dazu bei, meine ersten Schritte für diese Forschung zu machen. Denn dass sich dort früher ein Hafen befand, war zwar bekannt, es befand sich aber bis dahin noch keine Spur davon. Man begegnete bis dahin an der Küste diesbezüglich auch keinen archäologischen Befunden. Nach den Hinweisen, die auf einen Hafen deuteten, führten archäologische Befunde dazu, diese Gemeinde als Aulai zu lokalisieren. Diese Feststellung stellte sich anschließend eigentlich als Ausgangspunkt für andere Feststellungen heraus. Denn antike Quellen beschrieben die Lokalisation von Siedlungen, deren Lokalisation sich bis heute nicht konkret feststellen lie?en, mit dem Anhaltspunkt anderer Siedlungen, deren Lokalisation ebenfalls noch nicht festgestellt werden konnten. When it is believed to have been ?perfected', however, it need no longer change. Close inspection will reveal that most traditional details of the same type have many similarities, even when produced in diffe-rent regions at different times. This is one of the most characte-ristic aspects of traditional architecture, and is the exact opposite of our understanding of architecture today. One must strive to understand the working principle of a detail-how and why it has evolved to function so well, and, often, so beautifully. An architect capable of this understanding has mastered that detail and its utility, and can help its further evolution in the context of contemporary conditions of construction. This book, which is the outcome of 60 years of professional experience, is useful primarily for architects, preservationists and students in these fields. Yet this book can also address a much greater audience because it is the first to compile Ottoman classical details in a single volume. Furthermore, some of the buildings which these details are part of have fallen into ruins and others have lost their authenticity due to faulty interventions. These may be the only records of their details. If this book can attract attention to these beautiful details and further an understanding of their working principles it would have accomplished its purpose. Perfection lies in the details.
